Identified Map Exploit Banned

Historical capture recovered from the Wayback Machine · captured 2004-03-28 · 9 posts
The following has been added to the rules:

Known Map Exploits

Alpine Valley: Team 1 - Climbing the hill to access the ridge that runs alongside the map border is considered an exploit.

There may be more of these over time. We are being quite selective when calling something an "exploit". The exploit above has been banned because it allows players to completely circumvent the opposing teams defenses and construct a sublair or garrison behind the enemy base. It has not yet been confirmed if it can be done from both sides of the map, but if an opposing route is discovered, it is illegal as well.

We try hard to avoid coming to conclusions about what the mapper intended when we evaluate maps. Instead we focus on the nature and intent of the game itself. While many routes have been created that will allow players to circumvent basic combat, there is a limit to what can be considered reasonable.

*NOTE: Using routes similar to the one identified above, but not explicitly mentioned in the rules may still result in punishment. When identifying an exploit as illegal we consider the intent of the player using the proposed exploit. It is clear beyond a shadow of a doubt that any player using this sort of route has the intent of exploiting the terrain system to avoid combat and therefore it is a punishable offense.

This change has been added to the rules. Violators of this rule will receive a forfeit. This is not retroactive.

i dont really feel like putting this bug out in the open but for the sake of TWL i will
some maps you can build garr/sublair DIRECTLY on top of a red stone mine, which in effect, enables you to mine much much faster than normal, a constant stream of money. im not sure of the maps you can do this on so you can send your team of researchers on it.
You can in fact access the area behind the stronghold's on either side of the map.No exploit, just something commander's need to be aware of,all in the name of strategy.

Cain, this is different. The access point to the area behind the team 2 base is next to the team1 base. Players climb up next to their own base, then walk the ridge of the map - unseen by the enemy the whole time, and drop down behind the enemy stronghold.

we're definitely not saying that you can't just sneak into the enemy's base, build a garrison and that'll be illegal. it's just sneaking into their base by way of the exploitable hill by team 1's base.

several other players & myself tried to see if there was a way up to get on the map edge by team 2's base but there was not one that we could find.

I disagree with the "Unseen by the enemy the whole time" part. My team used this route once, and the oposing team saw us, so they all suicided to protect their base. There could be a way to go unseen.. if you hug the map wall, but there's a good chance of getting stuck if you do that. I just wanted to say that I don't think it can be done well while being unseen by the enemy.

FYI there is another spot on the map that team 2 can do the same thing. I can show you monday if you wish.
Please do. Thanks.

Banning 'exploits' is really dumb. If it is an exploit, it should be fixed in a patch. In the meantime, it's part of the game and people need to be aware of it and use it to their advantage. There are exploits all over. I can clip into rocks, buildings, and trees. You can barely see me. That's the game. In Battlefield 1942, I can hide inside a staircase...fire out and nobody can hit me. It's part of the game.

Hacks are different. Installing something that nobody else but you can exploit is cheating. If everyone has the ability to play the game in the same fashion, then it's part of the game! What you call an 'exploit', is really 'knowledge advantage'. If someone uses it and you don't know about it, then they know the game better than you do. I can't believe you would punish someone who knows the game extremely well, and uses that knowledge to their advantage!
