NEW YORK — Without backing down from his comments about a black football player, conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh resigned from his TV sports job, saying he regretted having caused "discomfort" to his colleagues at ESPN.

Limbaugh stepped down from the sports network's "Sunday NFL Countdown" late Wednesday, three days after making the statements that sparked outrage from Democratic presidential candidates, the NAACP (search) and the player himself.

The cable sports network accepted the radio talk show host's resignation.

"My comments this past Sunday were directed at the media and were not racially motivated," Limbaugh said in a statement Wednesday. "I offered an opinion. This opinion has caused discomfort to the crew, which I regret.

"I love `NFL Sunday Countdown' and do not want to be a distraction to the great work done by all who work on it," Limbaugh said. "Therefore, I have decided to resign."

Limbaugh was criticized for arguing during a pregame show Sunday that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb (search) is overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed.

"I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well," Limbaugh said.

"There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team," he said.

Seven black quarterbacks started games last weekend. Two other blacks who regularly start were out with injuries.

Limbaugh did not back down during his syndicated radio talk show earlier Wednesday.

"All this has become the tempest that it is because I must have been right about something," Limbaugh said. "If I wasn't right, there wouldn't be this cacophony of outrage that has sprung up in the sports writer community."

Democratic presidential candidates Wesley Clark, Howard Dean and the Rev. Al Sharpton had called for ESPN to fire Limbaugh. Clark, a retired Army general, called the remarks "hateful and ignorant speech." And Dean, a former Vermont governor, labeled them "absurd and offensive."

The NAACP also condemned Limbaugh's remarks, calling them "bigoted and ignorant," and called for the network to fire Limbaugh or at least provide an opposing point of view on the show.

McNabb had said earlier Wednesday that he didn't mind criticism of his performance, but was upset that Limbaugh made his race an issue and said it was too late for an apology.

"It's somewhat shocking to hear that on national TV from him," McNabb said. "It's not something that I can sit here and say won't bother me."

Chris Berman, who anchors the ESPN show, said he did not believe Limbaugh's tone or intent was malicious.

"As cut and dry as it seems in print, I didn't think so when it went by my ears," Berman said. "I probably should have looked to soften it."

Also Wednesday, media reports surfaced saying Limbaugh was under investigation in Florida for illegally buying and abusing prescription painkillers.

The New York Daily News, without identifying its source, reported in Thursday editions that Limbaugh was being investigated by the Palm Beach County state attorney's office. The newspaper said it had independently confirmed the allegations, first reported by the National Enquirer.

The Enquirer had interviewed Wilma Cline, who said she became Limbaugh's drug connection after working as his maid, according to the Daily News. She said that Limbaugh had abused OxyContin (search) and other painkillers.

A Miami lawyer for Cline, Ed Shohat, did not immediately return a phone message left by The Associated Press at his office before business hours Thursday. Limbaugh's lawyers could immediately not be located by The Associated Press for comment.

Mike Edmondson, a spokesman for the Palm Beach County state attorney's office, told the AP early Thursday that his office could neither confirm nor deny that an investigation was under way.

Limbaugh is the radio host of the politically focused "Rush Limbaugh Show," syndicated in more than 650 markets. ESPN spokesman Dave Nagle said ratings for "Sunday NFL Countdown" were up 10 percent overall since Limbaugh joined the show this year.

George Bodenheimer, president of ESPN and ABC Sports, accepted Limbaugh's resignation Wednesday. ABC and ESPN are owned by Walt Disney Co.

"We regret the circumstances surrounding this," Bodenheimer said. "We believe that he took the appropriate action to resolve this matter expeditiously."

Limbaugh was scheduled to deliver the keynote speech at the National Association of Broadcasters (search) convention in Philadelphia on Thursday morning.

Good. The idiot couldn't help himself and tried to bash liberals on ESPN the first chance he got. Sadly he forgot that while he can spew racist crap all over his radio show he can't do that in mainstream media. Bye Rush, you fat draft dodging piece of sh*t.

BTW - the "sports media" is not liberal. I laughed my ass off when he stated the "liberal sport media is out to get you" on his show yesterday!

It wasnt racist crap...He was addressing the media as well..As soon as someone white makes a comment about a black its racist? LOL...

He made an opinionated statement that wasnt politically correct and you have people(namely libs)who whined and cried about it.

People who always try to twist this type of shit into RACIST catagories are retarded

This guy is such a jackass, I dont know weather to laugh at him or just ignore him.

This dissability he has shouldnt effect the rest of us outside of his shitty ethnocentric little talk show where he can whine all he wants and gain the support of all the ohter whiners out there.

It was racist crap and it has nothing to do with the fact that the person who made it was white. It has to do with the fact that for no reason what-so-ever he brought race into the equation.

Libs? He stated that a NFL player was hyped because he was black, thus insulting the player, all other Black QB's, and all of the sports media!!!!!! I was listening to his radio show yesterday and a CONSERVATIVE sports writer called in and told Rush that "people like you are why liberals can get away with calling conservatives racist. There was absolutely no reason to bring race in as a factor."

The thing is no one twisted anything. Everyone used his EXACT quote. They even played it in FULL context on several shows. Rush sunk HIMSELF. No spin needed on this one.

It wasnt racist..I agree they do hype it up a little...Am I racist now? Give me a break...They did twist..Even Chris Berman said that...You have your opinion on it, but mine is it wasnt racist. He wasnt being malicious to anyone.
When is the man NOT malicious? He's made his entire carrear out of attacking other peoples character with his hypocratic and assinine comments (IE: The liberals are OUT TO TAKE YOUR SUVs!!! Yes rush... I'm sure theres a young liberal outside right now jacking your SUV as we speak you fat fuck [har.])

Who again are the ones who have vandelized over 100 car dealerships selling SUV's this year? Who are the ones destroyings peoples property and SUVS?? He is exactly right. Its not conservatives...
Who are the ones in the south lynching blacks and burning crosses?
Snake, you cant make stupid comments like that, we all know that none of the steriotypes we put on people based on political orientation are hardly ever true, I dont compair republicans to ultra-conservative KKK members. Likewise, its not fair to be compaired to these "animal rights" psychopaths who dont have anything better to do with their time but destroy.
Funny how articles throw this shit into the mix.

I dont agree with RL's beliefs btw.

So then you think all the balck QB's in the NFL are not and were not as good as people say, because the liberal media hyped them up because they were black?

You don't get it Snake, making broad comments like these call the reputations of many black QB's into question. He didn't say "the media over hyped THIS black quarter back" he said "The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well." This covers ALL OF THEM.

1..This statement was directed at teh media..And I do think the media hypes up some of the quarterbacks...They are playing in the NFL, so they are obviously good. But the media sensationalizes some of their accomplishments because of race...I agree with him and still dont see any malicious intent on his comments...Some people dont like to hear the truth and they attach RACIST to it. To me thats sad.

Limbaugh himself played the race card, that's the problem.

The fact is that there was no need for this. McNabb is having a bad year, yes, and he may get more praise than he's due. Is it because he's black or because shortly he arrived the Eagles went from cellar dwellers into legitimate contenders? Let's be honest, McNabb has a reputation for confounding defenders, and reputations are built on performance. It may not be sustained performance, but having pulled off a couple miracles labels him a potential miracle worker.

With the remark about wanting to see black quarterbacks do well, he handily ignored Steve McNair, who has become a complete, dangerous and frankly amazingly gutsy quarterback who most coaches would love to have in their lineups. He ignored Randall Cunningham, who brought the Vikings a missed field goal from the Super Bowl.

There are legitimate gripes about the lack of minority coaches in the NFL, and those are slowly being addressed. There are very few black head coaches, but minorities are steadily assuming the ranks of position coaches and coordinators. Coordinators become head coaches, but it takes time. In contrast, the number of black quarterbacks has risen steadily, and the number of successful black quarterbacks has risen steadily.

The point that McNabb gets more praise from the media than is due is well-taken. The fact that the media wants to make black QBs out to be better than they are is fallacy. Otherwise, where is the praise of Akili Smith or Kordell Stewart? And why isn't McNair already in the Hall of Fame?

When it comes to playing QB in the NFL, I feel comfortable saying the point (any more) is largely moot when it comes to race.
While I agree that it probably wasn't the place to bash the media. You guys openly just admitted that the media is mostly liberal by saying he was bashing liberals.

At any rate, Rush didn't say anything racists. It was just a straight media bash. lol, and it's true.

So, end this 'oh my god we got dirt on Rush' bullshit right now.

It was a bashing at the media, not a bash on black people. If you actually listened to his program you would know he's not racist.

exactly..I doubt any liberal has taken a few days and listened to a few shows..
Whether Rush's comments were much like his regular rhetoric. He is a shit stirrer. ESPN hired him precisely because he was controversial. I dont think they expected the backlash about this comment, and frankly Rush was an idiot to make such an assine comment like that. He should have known better.

I loathe the man, but I will say this. This country is FAR too sensitive about everything. While I think it is unwise to say a QB is only hyped because he is black, I also think it is his right to say it if he chooses. But he also should be prepared for the consequences of his unpopular point of view.

You need to give up this "liberal media" bullshit. It's no different then "vast right wing conspiracy".

FoxNews - Highest rated cable news show
Rush Limbaugh/Sean Hannnity - A combined 6 daily hours of conservative spin without liberal competition at all. A total of about 40 million listeners a week.
Wall Street Journal - Written and edited by conservatives

All three types of media - TV, Radio, and Print all having a truely conservative news source either at the #1 spot or near it. So STFU about this "liberal media" myth.

Not racist? Here are some things I was able to dig up in my first search......

Rush in the 70's on his first radio show had this to say to a black caller. "Take that bone out of your nose and call me back."

About the movie Malcom X he said this - "let's complete the education experience. You should tell them that they should loot the theater, and then blow it up on their way out."

About the NAACP he said this - "The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies."

When Carol Moseley-Braun (D-IL) was in the U.S. Senate, the first black woman ever elected to that body, Limbaugh would play the "Movin' On Up" theme song from TV's "Jeffersons" when he mentioned her.

Once, in response to a caller arguing that black people need to be heard, Limbaugh responded: "They are 12 percent of the population. Who the hell cares?"

I listen almost every day and you don't have to be a liberal to realise this guy is full of it. He lies so often it's almost funny. It's sad that so many stem cells were wasted on his "dittohead" audience.

So then people don't have a right to get upset at someones stupid comments? Where did you stand on the Dixie Chic things that had all the Right Wingers pissing themselves?

Hypocrit. Don't bitch about Rush not being able to say things that are "not politically correct" when you behave the same way.
Rush's qoute was indeed aimed at sports reporters. On yesterday's radio program, Rush provided the stats on the said player and questioned why higher praise was given and passed on other players. Limbaugh's point was questioning some of the media's backhanded racist attitudes. He was chanllenging the mantra of "Treat everyone as equals." If all were truly treated equal by those who champion that cause, then why do a story on somewhat better than avarage player? Irony does not come over to well that often.

Also, keep in mind the groups that are making the biggest to-do out of this quote. Democratic presidential hopefuls, NAACP, and the sports writers who were targeted in the comment. The stink here is manufactured. Rush's traditional opponents smell blood in the water and are salivating at the opportunity... And now, allegations of illegal drug use by Limbaugh. We'll see how this investigation turns out.

The nature of media, regardless of the political leanings of the employees and owners, is geared towards conflict and fear. (Coverage of shark attacks lead every major newscast for this years and years past even though the number or shark attacks was on the decline.) "If it bleeds it leads" stories of crime and carnage lead the newscasts while positive, human interest stories are called "puff pieces" and are relegated towards the back pages or third block of a newscast.

Today's media sickens me. There is very little that is hopeful. It's all doom and gloom and aimed at our societies fears. All for ratings share.

The Daily Show pwns.

It's sad that even our past time activities cannot evade the overly sensative bullshit this country just cannot seem to move past.

ESPN should have never put Rush in there.

They may as well have put Louis Farafuk in there while they were at it. Heck... maybe even give Donahue a spot... he been in need of a job.

learn the difference between being politically correct and saying something against your nation in a 'time' of war.

sigh...

But nice try on your point.

Ah here we go! The double standard rears it ugly head. Look at you Mr. Anti-PC telling us what should be acceptable and what shouldn't be acceptable to say.

lol you sounds EXACTLY like the PC crowd.

BTW - did you get mad at Newt Gingrich and the rest of the GOP when they attacked Clinton during "time of war"? We went to Bosnia to stop genocide and the GOP was against the war much like the hippies are against Iraq.

Actually any president that wants to crush our enimies I back. Nice try again on assuming what my stances are. And yes, I thought Newt was spineless to answer you directly. Which is something you obviously are not capable of. you'd rather avoid the questions and make assumptions on my stances and personally attack me. Wait... this sounds a lot like the media, and their liberal friends ..

And how is that a double standard. Your definition of PC needs adjustment. Going against the nation in a time of war, and telling someone, out right, that they are over-rated due to the media spending more attention time on them are totally different. So NO I didn't make a double standard..

is this all you have? Again, nice try.

edit: typo on your name, sorry

I'll get you started..

What's your stance on flat tax vs income tax?
Should we give more benefits to the 'poor' than successful people?
Should we get rid of the socialism in the school systems?
ect.ect..
Should we get rid of (rather lower) the 149 tax forms a small business must fill out each year?

I'm against it becasue taxing all the same percent does not make it equal. If one wanted to be fair find out what percent of income is kept after average living expenses are calculated in. Then tax according to that.

The rich have so many tax loopholes that I've never really worried about giving them a tax cut of any kind. Hell they even got rid of the death tax by lying to america and saying it was stopping farmers from passing on their livelyhood to their kids. In reality it only taxed that which exceeded 2.5 million dollars so that wealth could not be overly concentrated by one family.

I have never had a problem with taxing UNEARNED income heavily.

how about giving them the same benefits. Why should the goverment treat citizens differently? The goverments job to is represent it's people, not to play favorites among them.

Schools should recieve EQUAL funding, instead of heavily funding rich neighborhoods and poorly funding poor ones.

This is a GOP myth that the poor get more benefits then the rich when the rich get tax loopholes, superior public funding, etc etc.

Socialism in the school system? lol. You mean public schools? Public schools are what seperate the US from the third world. They allow all americans access to a good education, unlike the 3rd world where private schools reaign supreme.

Voucher plans are not enough to cover current private schools. So what would end up happening is that cheaper (crappy) private schools would spring up for the poor.

End result? A even wider gap in education between rich and poor then currently. But then again widening the gap is what the GOP is all about.

If you want to fix the schools, abolish the teachers union and put in some real accountablility. Like earned raises in pay instead of automatic, higher pay ceilings (more funding) to attract better teachers, etc etc.

I agree the top 1% have loop holes. But equality is this.
I'll take where I live as an example. If I go to the store and buy something I have to add on 7% sales tax. The flat tax they are talking about is 26%. That's a 19% jump. however, Income tax is roughly 25-33% for me which would be a min. of 6% instant tax break to everyone. Now, let's address the equality. Does our military protect rich people differently over in IRAQ or other countries when slaining our ememy? Do the roads get better in the city while the rich people drive over them? ect. ect. Equal government uses with the taxes equal % payment on the products.

Then why additionaly tax my boat? It took about 5% of my income to pay for that boat. What if a poor person pays 5% of their income for something else? They won't get additionally taxed for that product because it's not more expensive. Is that fair? No.

Also keep in mind that UNEARNED income as you put it would be subject to this tax if they were to buy ANYTHING. A lot of money is spread out illegally, which would cause a lot more money flow in the long run.

Keep in mind with the 'rich' term that is throw around that only covers 1% of the people the liberals are talking about. Not people like me who aim to own their own business with success.

I agree with the last paragraph of hold people/teachers accountable, without a doubt.

But here are some local cases that aren't just bound locally.

Socialism as in, my kid who I supply the tools he/she needs gets them taken away at the beginning of the school year so that they are dispursed throughout the class equally.

Wasting money such as the teachers all getting new desktop computers AND not or but AND brand new laptop computers, while the books they come home with look like they 400 years old, with the pages seperated from the binders. There are no new books to speak of.

Socialism as in controling the literature available to the children. Calling for banning such books as Lord of the Ring

That's what defines socialism. dispursing of individual tools, controling the reading material, ect.. ect..

To sum it up, I believe your school system plan with holding people/teachers accoutable is what needs to be instilled. But I think people such as yourself would have a different out look after 10 years on the flat tax if it was implemented. In the long run it would benefit everyone.

Is madden still doing NFL commentary? I hope he says stupid shit (OIf that's even possible considering he's already retarded) and gets fired. I HATE watching a game when his mouth is flapping. The guy is a tard.

I've hated him since day one of doing commentary. He's a complete jackass and tries to make anything sound so calculated and technical... I'm suprised we don't get the minute details of the hotdog vendor passing out the dogs. It's so obvious just how puffed up he is... the first game he worked on that I saw, he's describing a hail mary pass that scored a winning TD. He's like "And notice the QB as he does the play action and the calculated fake bootleg, then passes to a perfectly positioned receiver with deadly accuracy blah blah..." In the replay, you can clearly see the play action was in fact a reverse that went wrong, the QB was running for his life and when it zooms on his face just as he passes, the guy has his eyes closed and you can see him mouthing "Please god...".

John Madden: Please retire and never talk about football again. Ever.

[15:11] [@half_the_sky] no. I love pain.
This just in:

ESPN has hired Ann Coulter to do sideline commentary. Apparently she will only be covering games the Patriots play.

lol, not to mention that he sided with the dallas cowboys a lot
Yeah, he got what he deserved. The only way we can get rid of race problems in this country is if everyone ignored them and pretended they don't exists. You certainly should not be allowed to even mention any obvious racial bias on the airways because it might make some people uncomfortable.

ROFL Mutha-Fukkin OWNED!!

Who cares WHY he left? Personally, he may even have been partially right. A successful Black quarterback is rare enough that it makes for good copy, and the Media may be very eager to "work the story". That said, Limbaugh is still an apologist for the extreme right, and nothing else. The less he interrupts my TV-watching with his pointless drivel the happier I am. Let him stick to whining to illiterate rednecks on AM radio, or better yet, stick him on Fox News (AKA Faux News) where he belongs.

Illiterate rednecks? Your poor attempt at slaming conservatives are funnier everyday...
