I have a Sierra Tent and am looknig to get into a smaller and lighter one. I have test out a Northface(Roadrunner 2) one and liked it. Suggestions or comments on what they like?

Also...Water Filters...I have a Pur Scout Waterfilter that takes out everything except Viral. Anyone use iodine or tablets for those and what do they recommend??

I always got for the light tents. How many people? 2 person tent?

The models with the optional zip on vestibules are the way to go for me. Gives me a place to store wet/muddy gear, shoes, etc, and not have it next to me in the tent.

Here is another site that you might find some good stuff. http://www.rei.com

Waterfilter- I use a Sweetwater filter. Small, easy to clean, and does almost 2 liters per minute. I wouldnt bother with the iodine tablets. Ive used the sweetwater filter for years and never had a problem.

Give me the details! I love backcountry trips!

thanks alpha...I have a 3 person Sirra and its a great tent. But it weights a ton and its just too big IMO...I like Vestibules as well...The Roadrunner by Northface I liked because the air movement through it... I have a CatsMeow Sleeping bag and Gregory Lassen Pack...I havent had to use my water filter much but was worried about viral contamination through the water..My filter is this one

I backpack a lot up in Northern AZ. I usually pack water in but I have a water purifier that has a viral stop. I don't use iodine but most of my friends use it alone w/o a filter. They also have iodine remover which restores the clarity to the water and eliminates the taste, or so they say.

Iodine is iodine, go with the cheap stuff. I'd suggest picking up the iodine remover too.

If you are looking for a new system that stops viral w/o iodine, this is the purifier I have: http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?productId=10279767&storeId=8000&catalogId=40000008000&langId=-1&addon=671113-671111

As far as tents go, how much smaller? A solo? I only know 1 2 man that is much smaller than your north face, but it's a coldweather tent.

edit: I'm gonna look dumb I didn't see alpha's post.

I am gonna stay with a 2 person..I am 6'2 and those smaller tents are made just too small. Thanks for the links guys...I am gonna pick up some of that viral stop from them...
I use TANG to drink with my water since it covers up most bad tastes and has carbs in it..

I would say no, but that's cuz I'm a big pussy when it comes to water. I don't even drink tap water at home. I usually always pack water in and it's always bottled. Bad water can ruin a trip, I don't take the risk.
Your right...Crapping and shitting are the worst
Teh only thing that can get through my filter is the viral and with taht Viral stop I should be OK

Ya it works great.

REI Makes a good two man tent that's not smaller but it's a little bit lighter than your NorthFace. Take a look at their HalfDome 2 2003. It's not as expensive, but it's not as high quality either.

That is a good tent...I looked at that one as well...And the price is good too...I hate shopping! I always get buyers remorse after I get something...Hell, I bought a new chair that my ultra-lite mat slips into to convert into a little chair and wondered after I bought it, if that was smart..lol..

Thanks for the help guys..

I do. I use military surplus gear. I have a nato field pack and a 3 man canvas tent. Me and my buddies did the appalachian trail for 1 month and they constantly were talking about getting stuff like mine. The real thing is, all the military gear is specialized to hold weapons, and I use my extra compartments for water and food supplies.

If you are looking for a tent just for yourself, they sell one man mummy bags with rain flies that work very well. It rolls up and fits in the regular sleep roll storage area on your pack.

I never use water filters. I either boil my water, use tablets or both. Depending on the way the water looks. It may taste like crap, but at least you don't get the runs on the trail.

The sweetwater purifier http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/standard-pod.jhtml?id=0003935&navAction=push&navCount=2&indexId=cat20132&parentId=cat20132&parentType=index&rid=&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fcatalog%2Fpod-link.jhtml_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20075

Is my favorite. Ive used a couple of the others, and this one seems easier to use. The intake hose is longer, so you can literally stand in a stream, drop one end, put the other in your mouth and drink.

I usually carry 5 gallon plastic collapsable bottle along, pump water into it, then carry that to the campsite.

Ive never had a need for the viral stop. Ive just used the purifier filter and never ended up with the "greenapple twosteps".

Incidentally, if you didnt already know, http://www.cabelas.com is another good outdoor gear site.

Where you going snake? Give us the details!!
Hey Snake, take a look at some of the Eureka single person tents. Unlike other companies that make camping goods they specialize in tents only..I've been using them for yrs and can say without a doubt they are the best made tents out there.
