Unemployment Rate Drops Big......

Historical capture recovered from the Wayback Machine · captured 2014-04-26 · 76 posts
Score one for Obama who fixed our economy!!!

The unemployment rate could fall substantially early next year as belt-tightening in Washington throws more than a million long-term unemployed Americans off the benefit rolls.

The loss of benefits could spur former recipients to either drop out of the labor force or accept jobs they previously would not have considered. Some economists estimate this could lower the current unemployment rate of 7.3 percent by as much as half a percentage point.

Between this and California everyone will be gainfully unemployed but not counted that way in no time.

Wait so you're saying if people stop receiving unemployment benefits they'll go out and get jobs.? How much did this lesson cost us so the liberals could learn it.
These fuckers should have been investing in the stock market.

I just don't understand why people are so fucking stupid when they could have made a killing in the market. Since the crash, we've gone from about 6,200 up to 16,500. What the fuck are they doing with all the free time? Read a fucking book about investing and you don't need a job.

brilliant!

IMO, Unemployment should be 30 days no questions asked if you put into it for a year or more. If you can't find a job in 30 days, you are not trying hard enough or willing enough to take something other than ideal.

:facepalm

When an upper level marketing manager in texas making 93k/yr has her business go under, would it really be all that shocking she couldn't find job placement in 30 days? Imagine if the only job openings AT or NEAR her pay grade are in other states. 30 days to both find that job, interview, and uproot your family (fuck your husband's job) seems like plenty to you?

No, my bad, she should just apply at burger king. problem solved.

P.S. I'm not for 99 week unemployment. Thats retarded. But I would say a 12 week minimum would suffice.

well, 26 weeks is beyond ridiculous, and extending beyond that to 99 weeks is criminal. If you haven't worked in 26 weeks, who would want to hire you? so maybe 30 days is tight for some, but you have to draw a line somewhere. where ever you put the line people will take.

How bout if you are making that kind of coin, maybe you should be smart enough to put some away in case? We need to revamp the way we think and take personal responsibility for our fates.

I would be okay with a system where you only get it if you put into it, and how much you get depends on what you put in less managing fees. System we have now is way too easy to abuse.

agreed with 99 weeks=criminal
agreed with personal responsibility and accountability

I just understand, from a personal standpoint (my girlfriend benefitted in 2008 from nearly 4 months of unemployment. She tried every place from Waitressing to Home Depot and could not find work, it was depressing) that there are extenuating circumstances for some people.

We had 6 grand saved up when she lost her job, that was just about gone when she finally landed another job. And neither of us were making big coin.

I too personally had benefited from it and got off it before I had a job and before it ran out because I felt it was holding me back by interfering with my survival instinct. I went on it after I my military orders ran out. I was in a bit of a funk because i loved the military job and the easy money just kept me unmotivated. Had a Job in a week after I cut that cord.

this affected my opinion of UE a lot. Also every time I went to the UE office, all I saw was people who did not want to work who were very good at milking it. The UE office even tried to talk me into to staying on it.

System needs a complete overhaul. I think it should be handled like a 401K where you have to put into it. And when you retire you should get to keep what you did not use.

for those not vested, there is welfare already in place.

it's ok snake, you just need to open your mind a little and not assume you know what people are based on internet disagreements. We will agree on many things and disagree on some too.
total agreement with discussion in thread.

you should only be able to take out what you put in.

be it with UE, SS, or Medicaid IMO.

After that it is charity and charity is best left for those who want and decide to be charitable with their money.
Entitlements breed laziness that destroys the creativity and productivity of people who understand they must either do or dont without a safety net.

It's this kind of mentality that destroys our ability to remain competitive in the global marketplace...

all so politicians can keep their seat at the public trough and enrich themselves by using stupid people who are happy to accept scraps from that table at the expense of the people who provided that table and food in the first place.

Sink or swim. Make the call.

As long as everyone here believes I am an unemployable midget who dumpster dives for meals and lives in a cardboard box lit by chemlights, then yes, I have a 'real job'.

wtf -ss-

why are you stealing all the good jobs from me?

I will never find employment again, in our bullshit society, if this keeps up.

Just part of the pattern since I stole from the American people for over 20 years before being kicked off the dole.

Besides, havent you heard?

The economy is finally getting better after 5 years, so there will be opportunities everywhere.

more opportunities to raise taxes to fund the freeloader lifestyle maybe

Do you have a job, besides investing in the stock market?

unemployment was very useful to me twice.

the first time i used it to get the unemployment tuition waiver at a state school. i got it for one year and I busted my balls to take as many credits as possible. after the first free year i took out loans and won some scholarships for writing poetry.

I finished my degree in 3 years by getting permission to take 21 credits a few semesters, and taking summer classes. i was taking 21 credits, working in the computer labs and then as a tutor, and for 6 months i worked saturday and sundays for 10-12 hour days assisting a wedding photographer. all i did was school, work work and homework. i had no time for anything else.

graduated magna cum laude as well. i'd say that was a very productive result out of unemployment.

the next time was after i got laid off from publishing as magazine sales tanked due to the internet. i applied for jobs very frequently but its bad out there. that's when we decided to open the food truck. i was putting in 10 hour days researching everything about the food truck business and set up the paperwork. so i was working to open a small business, which people should appreciate, and the measly $400 a week from unemployment let me do that ful time.

i'd say that was a productive use of unemployment.

i know people who have abused it and i know people who used it while being productive.

no matter what you will have people that abuse it but it's just collateral damage because so many people use it the way it was intended. you can't filter them out unless you assign people to follow everybody who is collecting. at that point it's more expensive than giving out the checks.

believe me, corporations in this country are getting billions with tax evasion, tax incentives and a plethora of gimmicks. i'd worry about them more than unemployment insurance.

The right is more virtuous than the left. They have twice as many virtues because they have double the standards.

Props Pixel for making good use of it and it is not your fault the system is flawed. I would argue why should you get money for school paid for by people working who can't get money for their own kids because they make too much (which you don't have to be rich to fall into this category)?

I think the abuse is so large now that it isn't worth it to continue this way because so few do it right. As I said, it should be something you pay for like a 401K, and the government should treat it the same, Tax Deferred etc etc. If a company wants to do matching to compete for your hire, it should be their option. It is very hard on a small company that hires someone in good faith to get scammed by a worker who works only hard enough to qualify for it.

I think all programs should go this way and become self sustaining. Charity never works and only creates more problems than it solves, good intentions or not. Charity should be a choice for the giver, not forced through taxes.

The unemployment rate couldn't be low.....while the stock market at record highs any other way.

clearly this is the case

now someone just needs to explain to me how record levels of poverty are still possible.

oh, that's right.....we need more redistribution.

we could stop by not giving wallstreet another 85 billion every month....down to 75 billion now.....but instead I think we should just tax the shit out of the middle class.

or what used to be middle class. oBAMACARE sufficed enough.

Have you considered that may be you are the exception to what has become the norm?

Make sure you understand me clearly on this: I like the fact that you made the most of your situation, so congrats to you. But make no mistake, the abuses are now so rampant that the system needs a complete overhaul and / or dismantling.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a helping hand up, but financing a lazy way of life is a no-go.

Agreed, pixel made good use of the UE money but is it the governments place to invest in the future of individuals? If so, wheres mine? Why shouldnt I quit my job and get a free to me government sponsered education?

Is there any guarantee it will it get a return on its investment? Should it be taking earned money from working people to make this investment?

ROFL. This is just another example of people praising something which sounds good but has had no real tangible results or benefit from society. Because he got a degree everybody is saying Bravo, but what has that accomplished? First off what was the degree in? Basket weaving? Let's look at the results. Did that Magna Cum Laude degree prepare him for the world? Did it give him the skills and education necessary to be succesful? The results seem to indicate the opposite. He says he went to a publishing company that "tanked due to the internet". I hate to be the bearer of reality but that business didn't tank because of the internet; it tanked due to failure to adapt and bring a desireable product to market. How you can be so smart and earn a degree with high honours and not understand such a basic concept just shows that the education you received or the lessons you brought with you from it was woefully inadequate and inherently flawed.

Next you were on unemployment and apparently unemployable even with this taxpayer subsidized degree so what do you decide to do? Open a small business? WTF! Seriously what paper mill granted you a degree that you attempted to open a small business while struggling financially? Then you brag about working 10 hours a day "researching" your food truck business. If you expect to create and grow a small business you'd better be willing to invest a LOT more then 10 hour days into making that dream a reality. Then let's see what that subsidized research bought the American taxpayer. First off when you stated your intention to open a food truck in New Jersey/New York I thought you were crazy. Not because a food truck can't be profitable; I'm a firm believer that almost any business can be profitable if one is both creative and willing to outwork the competition; but because you were attempting to open your first business in one of the most anti-small business environments in the nation. Furthermore the markets you "researched" were not just glutted with creative and hard-working competition but much of your competition was either already well-established or had deep financial pockets with which to grind you out of the marketplace. Even in spite of that from what I could see you still managed to bring a quality product to market at an economically feasible pricepoint. From your own statements the reason that business failed was more due to regulatory forces than market forces. So what did that taxpayer funded "research" actually net the taxpayer?

I'd say that both instances were failed investments.

Pixeltard acting like everyone is honest is hilarious. There are so many jobs that are staying open because the biggest competition is unemployment. I see it daily. People saying they don't want to get off it.
Why work when you can sit at home , do drugs and get paid for almost 2 years.

I got a degree in English with a writing concentration. Without that i would not have gotten certain jobs. A BA was required. And I paid full tuition for 2 years. I'd say that is a success.

I researched a lot on the business on the ground, on the phone and online. I talked to other food truck owners. I looked at different trucks for their layouts and drew sketches of ours. I made lists of equipment and modified them all the time. I went to different food trucks and counted how many covers they did utilizing an app on my phone. I did this for multiple days and multiple times to get an idea of customer traffic at different points. Most small businesses fail. I researched ingredients and recipes. I found an ingredient that was totally unkown in America and it made our Lamb Kefta so special. I researched pita bread and suppliers. ETC

The failure? Well It was a combination of brick and mortar food places having more influence in towns because they paid property taxes and we didn't so they had more leverage to regulate us out of business. It was also an issue because in NJ there is simply not enough foot traffic to sustain the business during cold or rainy weather, unlike NYC. It wasn't our branding which I designed and people loved, it wasn't our food cause we had a 5 star average on yelp which is really tough to get.

And I don't see how being entrepreneurial and running a business for two years is any sort of failure. Honestly people that have the balls to open a business should be commended not put down. You are a weird dude to put that down. Benefits to society? We drove foot traffic in areas that needed more of it, benefiting local businesses. Especially in Newark. It was my idea to bring a food truck festival to jersey city that was a huge success mostly because of the trucks. And we gave people some damn good food and opened up people to different cuisines, which would now let them frequent more restaurants to get that.

And yes, when I said my publishing company failed due to the internet it should be understood that certain publishers failed to adapt to the new model. As a lower level dude I instituted SEO on my events website, started email blasts, designed ad campaigns, whatever it took. I had no degree in marketing, I just had drive and a brain and figued everything out myself and implemented it with whatever budget they gave me. Before I started there I had no fucking idea what SEO was. But within a month I had the companies SEO team on our goddamn website optimizing it. I had known what google analytics was just by reading tech blogs year after year. I was the first due to use it. considering our event was in 18 cities per year. knowing your web traffic for each of these areas was so important. I turned that shit on. And so much more actually.

I also talked to the publisher what we could do online that was better. But they didnt listen or have the resources and it just took them too long. Just like the music industry failed to adapt to digital media.

The main reason I was let go from my job in publishing is an interesting story. The manager of marketing was my boss. He was a shady dude but good friends with the publisher so he could do shit that was shady. He was having an affair with this woman and I was told he'd been trying to find a way to get her in to the company so be careful they might try to set me up. And her experience was in event production which is what I was doing.

I was very good at my job actually, I incrased revenue from the previous guy by multiple numbers. I was running an event sponsored by Sony and run by Popular Photography magazine. Because of my success Sony renewed the contract for another two years for 2 million. So anyway, this manager got me put on probation for a bullshit reason. I had 30 days to get out of it. I busted my balls even though I knew it was bullshit. People that had been there constantly warned me I was being setup. So what I did was get an external hard drive and made it the physical location of my emails cause I knew the IT there sucked and had no backups. I had an event in Orlando and the marketing manager brought his mistress along to 'observe' things. Basically to see how I did what I did.

I knew then it was over. So they let me go and indeed she was hired. And from what my ex colleague told me was that she sucked. Guess what, when the 2 year contract was up Sony did not renew. It was a shit show. My colleagues loved me because I was very personable and cracked jokes and was smart about giving advice. I was told by two colleagues that I made some of their worst days at work bearable by just being funny and honest and general good guy.

So when I was canned I took the hard drive with me and shredded all the paperwork for the work I had done. They were stupid to not have security watch me. I still would have gotten the hard drive but not be able to shred shit.

I was told that after I left the marketing manager, marketing director and the main man publisher were sitting at my desk with my laptop saying where the fuck are his emails. Like totally flustered and totally floored they weren't there. They were just like WTF they had no idea I could pull that off. They needed them to see how to run the show successfully like I did for the last two years. Ha. Fuck them. I knew I was being setup so I fucked them. Assholes.

P.S. and after they got a new publisher who wasn't friends with the marketing manager, who realized this guy was barely doing work, they put him on probation and then fired his ass.

no matter what you will have people that abuse it but it's just collateral damage because so many people use it the way it was intended. you can't filter them out unless you assign people to follow everybody who is collecting. at that point it's more expensive than giving out the checks.

believe me, corporations in this country are getting billions with tax evasion, tax incentives and a plethora of gimmicks. i'd worry about them more than unemployment insurance.

Do you have a job, besides investing in the stock market?

Does keeping TWL entertained count as a job?

unemployment was very useful to me twice.

the first time i used it to get the unemployment tuition waiver at a state school. i got it for one year and I busted my balls to take as many credits as possible. after the first free year i took out loans and won some scholarships for writing poetry.

Dang.....he covered every thought and criticism I had but was feeling too lazy to type out.

As soon as I read he had scholarships for poetry I couldn't stop laughing. That alone is surely worth any cost and baggage possible to the US taxpayer.

I know dozens of low income people in my town who took tons of "college assistance money" to buy drugs, tech gear, etc....and got away with it for a few years before finally getting cut off.

They too, ironically, despite never finishing an actual class....are about the same position financially as he is now. jumping from UE check to UE check, wandering to find them self, and looking for even more assistance from others.

I can't wait to go on UE and get my PhD in Underwater Basket Weaving.

Utilizing techniques from the 13th century if possible.

Then I too can help save America from our economic issues.
