HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Maryland State Police say a trooper is recovering from being hit by a tractor-trailer as he stood along Interstate 70 near Hagerstown.

A spokesman said Friday that Trooper David Avila suffered shoulder, back and leg injuries. The agency posted a dashboard video clip of the June 14 incident on YouTube Friday to publicize a state law requiring drivers to give stopped emergency vehicles an extra lane of space.

Avila had stopped a sport-utility vehicle and was speaking to the driver when a tractor-trailer drifted into the right shoulder. The truck grazed the police cruiser and then zoomed past the SUV with Avila sandwiched between the two vehicles.

Truck driver William Riegel Jr. of New Paris, Pa., was fined $100 Aug. 20 for negligent driving and failing to move over.

Only $100... not bad.

Surprised there isn't more outrage considering the disability and workman's comp pay will end up costing the state much much more. Where's the outrage!!!lol

If the cop was close to 40 years old... he could TOTALLY retire on disability and keep 80% of his salary. Move to Delaware where they won't tax his pension check, and live large doing nothing.

GOD! I'm so stupid. Instead of college degrees, I could have been at Academy, working the job for 20 years, and out on 70%.

Cops in Jersey are horrendously overpaid by the time they're fully vested.
What are the average salaries for cops down there?

edit:
You can actually go into a new search and look up any public employee in NJ... Teachers, firefighters, etc.

Public jobs are fucking AMAZING!

Look at this guy in Jersey.
Edward Kerwin, highest paid public employee in the state

Guy holds 9 jobs in the state for an annual salary of $362,186.

http://www.njpp.org/articles/double-dippers-boost-salaries
Of the 2,205 double-dippers, 74 had salaries last year that topped the governor’s pay. They included Edward L. Kerwin, 57, who held nine public jobs in tax departments in four counties and was paid $336,031, and Damian G. Murray, 62, a municipal court judge in eight towns in Ocean County, who made $326,412.

Must be a tax collector in 9 towns.

The problem is that government jobs are paid for by our taxes, and it seems a little unfair that the guys at the top dictate their own salaries... on our collective dollar

Taxes in New Jersey are out if control. 2nd highest in the nation, next to California. People wonder why... it's no brainer, really.

I came to the same conclusions that you did about this.

anyone who went to college is a dipshit when jobs like this are available....not to mention with benefits and pensions like this.

I should move to this state. Im a sheriff's deputy in SC with 3 years and am only making just over $30k a year. Retirement will be only be between 50 and 60% of that with 25 years.

My dad is friends with a guy who used to be a captain of the County Police up in Bergen. They used to go to the FBI Conventions together. Guy is SMART because after he retired, he got a job teaching criminal something at Seton Hall University.

One thing the guys on the job up in NY/NJ were told... Don't tell anyone where you work, because NY/NJ cops make a shit-ton of money.

Hell, if you're in SC, all the "half-back" retirees from Jersey are retired cops with gigantic pensions. My one friends dad, Jackson Twp chief. Guy retired to SC back in the 90s. He was around 55y/o.
My brother is a detective now and still doesn't make shit. I'm guessing the difference is that there isn't a union here.

NJ has mafia backed unions. When the police force is paid for by polititions in the mafias back pocket, you get nice salaries and retirement packages.
The more of a perpetual deficit the state has, the more it sucks on gun control, the more leftists control it .......

the more insane police/firefighter/and state employee salaries are.

Be it New York, Jersey, California, the rule keeps true.
