Anchor turns fat insult into empowering message

After a viewer suggested WKBT’s Jennifer Livingston wasn’t a good role model because she is overweight, the Wisconsin anchor gave an impassioned speech on-air denouncing bullies, and encouraging kids to remember their self-worth rather than allowing themselves to be defined by the negativity of others. NBC’s Anne Thompson reports.

This is blowing up around the country. Viewer suggests she's not a good role model for young girls because she's overweight. Is promptly accused of being a bully and now this lady is the hero of fatties and the anti-bullying movement everywhere. Mind boggling.

She's blowing up alright.......

I haven't seen a bitch that bloated since they dredged Rosanne Barr our of that all you can eat Korean BBQ restaurant.
Full video:

Maybe I don't understand the novelty of it to you, but more power to her.

I for one think the health downsides of being overweight merit it being a topic for honest dialogue as a problem. Yes, obesity leads to numerous health problems. Yes, it's pretty irritating to be next to somebody who can't keep their ass in their airplane seat. But do I think seeing a fat person on TV means now those legitimate concerns will just disappear and nobody will understand them? If so, I really shouldn't watch something like Battlestar Galactica or I'll be chain smoking and drowning in bourbon.

On the other hand, I've talked to some girls who grew up overweight and often social stigma pushed them to things far worse for psychological health and seldom resulted in them suddenly acquiring some mythical drive to shed the weight. Why would you care about getting a better body to join a bunch of assholes masturbating to themselves at others' expense? The crowd doing drugs doesn't care what you look like, maybe they'd be better friends.

I'm plenty opposed to the notion of a lovey-dovey coddling when nature itself is a merciless frosty bitch sometimes, but children ostracizing each other is one of the reasons (many, many reasons) our public education system is so patently ineffectual.
I'd totally hit it........

But my big game hunting permit just expired.

Now I have to rescind my post since I laughed at that
We were meant to laugh at low hanging fruit........

If not it wouldn't be so damn ripe and sweet.

Since this country is no longer a meritocracy, of any measurable sort, why not judge and base people off of extraneous and superfluous superficial characteristics?

Sadly the only shred of merit based activity in this country anymore all involves sports.....And clearly this bitch aint running nowhere. Unless her ball handling/dribbling skills are up to par, her prospects are dubious.

It amazes me how this country has come to believe that bullying is a cause for kids mental behaviors & the reason for going & killing dozens of people.
Never mind the lack of parenting or the lack of teaching & discipline in kids lives today.
guy is not a bully, just an idiot expressing his unfounded opinion...why unfounded? read next:

and I got news, anchors are not supposed to be role models for anyone.

and yes, she is overweight, and no, that ain't healthy, and no, that should not stop her from working.

wtf M'erica?
The guy sent her a personal e-mail. She is an on air personality. So its okay to watch her by her standards, to help them get advertising dollars, to drive up their ratings, but if you have a comment about the show, you are a bully.

If the guy started a blog, posted videos comparing her to a cow, or attacked her for her weight that would be a bully. He expressed concern about her as a public figure and role model, and did it in a private message.

Was he a bit of a dick. Absolutely. Was he a bully? No. How many e-mails do you think she gets complaining about the liberal media? Are they all bullies? She took it personally.

Her head would blow right off her neck if she read and posted in TWL if she can't handle a single, private e-mail sent to her on-air account that is open to the public and asks for comments and opinions. Guy was a dick, ignore e-mail, get over it.

I agree with you on one hand, and don't on another. For sure, it starts with the parenting. Kids need discipline, in spades. Enough of this trend where people want to be "best friends" with their kids. I love my dughter more than anything in this world, and we have a lot of fun together, but there is a definite line bewteen child and parent that she knows is there. If she misbehevaes, she gets one warning to not do it again, after that there are consequences. And that is for the first time. If she does it again in the future, whatever set of consequences have already been established are carried out immediately, no warnings. And you knw what? She shares with other kids at school, she tells her friends off when they make fun of other kids, and she is always welcome at other kid's houses, because the parents are always impressed with how well behaved she is.

But on the other hand, I do believe that bullying today has more impact. When you and I grew up, if someone bullied us, we punched them in the face as hard as we could. That's just what we did. If a kid got pushed into a locker, only that kid, the kid doing the pushing, and the 20 ppl standing around saw anything. It was limited to an immediate time and area. You could go home and other than just thinking about it for a few days, it was over. Now, 6 people will film it in HD on their phones, upload it to youtube and facebook, and by the time you get home it is everywhere, and kids from the next town are making fun of you. Hell, some of these videos go viral, and then people from all over the world are making fun of you, and it will be there, for everyone to see, forever.

Here, we can handle the shit talk. We are adults, and we can give as good as we get, and for all the shit that goes on here there is very little in the way of true maliciousness. But teenagers are pieces of shit. They have probably never experienced death, other than elderly relatives, and so they don't really have any frame of reference. When they say they wish you would kill yourself, they actually mean it. So yeah, while I'm not sure that bullying today is more serious in terms of quantity, I imagine it must be a lot more hurtful in terms of quality.

Well, if one is inclined to believe her, it was the others at the news station who made the letter public. She got on the bandwagon of addressing it five days after it was posted to her husband's blog.

I suppose the principle objection is whether her fatness itself - since the author of the email confesses to having basically no idea what her show is like - somehow entails being a bad role model.

Also, the veil of being a good role model to children is incredibly thin. How many children watch the morning news program? Someone was an asshole, and she had the means to call them out on it.

But I agree, she took someone questioning her character based on her body alone personally, real shocker.
Who is the bully here? She gets a private e-mail delivered to her advertised on air account. She reads it and shares it with her husband. Private e-mail is now shared.

Husband goes on air to attack the guy. She jumps in, Others jump in. Who is the bully?

She could ignore the e-mail. She could have responded directly to the person one-on-one. She could close her on air e-mail account. She shared it, her husband attacked, she didn't call off the attack but escalated it. Who is the bully?

Imagine if this was in person. She is taking questions from viewers, one guy says something about her weight. She gets her husband, he starts berating the guy, she starts yelling at him, the crowd jumps in and starts yelling. Who would be the bully?

Seems more publicity stunt and over reaction than a person crusading for the right to be on air at whatever weight she chooses.
i read the letter, he was not demeaning to her, he was factual.

how can being factual be bullying? bullying is about a patterns, tone and intent.

Guy showed no ill intentions in any of those areas.

she is pulling the Victim Card. I hate it when people do that shit.
Factual?

Since when is everyone on TV a role model? Why would anyone consider a news anchor a role model? Maybe one of the fuckers from 60 minutes...but the local shit? That's a bullshit argument (reason) to call this woman fat.

Bottom line...this woman was forced to respond because her husband couldn't keep her shit between them. Some people simply hate fat people. Hatting fat people is the new "ism", and it's socially acceptable. What most people don't know, is that other than the "visual" measurement...most people are obese. Don't believe me? Check for yourself fatty.

CDC/BMI

At 5' 11", I SHOULD weigh between 133 and 179. Picture that? A 5' 11" man that weighs 140?

News flash for the News Anchor:

Being fat is a choice.

If you don't like being called fat then fix it. Pointing out the obvious isn't bullying. If the email said "kill yourself, you fat fucking pig", then that would be one thing... But being oversensitive about your own personal poor choices of diet and exercise isn't grounds for standing on a soap box.

alright, my bad for not specifying...althouhg I already did say earlier that she is not expected to be a role model.

I meant factual in the sense that she is indeed fat/obese.

now, she could have just said: "Mr so and so, you are wrong, I am not expected to be a roled model for anyone, I am here to present the news" and call it a day.

that would have been enough, not needing to "explain" away her obesity or justify it, she should have treated it like a non issue, for it is a non issue, instead she behaved like an insulted victim.

she was not insulted, she IS obese.

AGain, the professional expectations were misguided (her a role model), so she should have corrected that and let the fat part rest. pun intended.

If you go to a health website that shows more detail in the weight category, you can see it broken down in frame size. Some people at 5' 11" could have narrow shoulders, small necks and tiny wrists. While they might not look attractive, it has to do with the percentage of that weight being fat.

I'm personally 5'11" and 170 pounds. I fit in the healthy category, and I really wouldn't want to weigh any more or less than I do now. I PT 4 times a week, and adjust my diet to maintain that weight.
I dont agree with the scales either, I mean, the index scales.

But that chick is clearly obese. The definition of obese is not at issue here, as she clearly is in the territory, ALL of it.

If I had a choice between looking at her and looking at this

I would change the channel.

She should be lucky to have her job. Its just the way the industry is. In fact she probably feels threatened and singles out and vilifies this one guy because she doesn't want to go off on her employers. I'm thinking this one guy isn't the big bully in this.

If I was the station manager I'd be praying this gave he attention that got her offers to take her off my hands.
Who is that Stryk?

Fuck, she is smokin' hot.
