Let me get your opinion!

Also, due to money and other reasons, I may just wait until the summer comes before I try to assemble a rig. Wishful thinking.

couple of thoughts...
1. SSD drive is really a must. Load windows on it and everything else on a second drive.
2. personal preferences (bring on the flames) ASUS MB and NVIDIA graphics card.

Memory is so damn cheap right now, I'd go to 12 or 16. You never know when a Thailand is going to happen and cause a shortage.

I would consider a SSD drive since you're might actually fill that 500 gb anyway.
If you're waiting till next year, check out OCZ's line of PCI-e solid state memory with 4 controllers, its way faster than any SATA hard drive. For a few hundred you may be able to get 50gigs of space to install windows and a few frequently used applications, takes a few seconds to boot up off of it. I'm hoping to wait it out a little longer and nab one over 120gigs for under 350$.
