SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- Kim Jong Il, North Korea's mercurial and enigmatic leader, has died. He was 69.

Kim's death was announced Monday by state television from the North Korean capital, Pyongyang.

Kim is believed to have suffered a stroke in 2008 but appeared relatively vigorous in photos and video from recent trips to China and Russia and in numerous trips around the country carefully documented by state media.

I think, for all intents and purposes... Kim Jong Il has been dead for quite some time.

Since 2008, I don't think he's been able to actually make policy or anything... from what I understand, he had a BAD stroke... which is good, guy was a dick.

But after a debilitating stroke, you think he was actually making decisions in N. Korea?

N. Korea is still a problem... the past few incidences was Kim Jong's son... Kim Jim Bob (or whatever) exerting his authority... I'm not sure if we'll see the end of this regime anytime soon.

Sadly, you can only know about as much as you have sufficient information.

If they had free media and open access to outside communication, and willfully chose to not overthrow that tyrannical shithead leadership, I would be completely on board with you.

Unfortunately, they just don't know any better. Most of them have never left their country (because they aren't allowed to) and can only blindly trust that the colossal shit sandwich that they are being fed is actually made of prime rib (which everyone, living outside of North Korea, can clearly see it isn't).

It really teaches an important lesson about what people will tolerate in a country when they don't know any better, don't have any other options, and/or become completely complacent.
