Dead Horse Question:

LSS: Desktop died awhile back, building a new gaming rig. Been quite a while since I shopped for parts.

AMD or Intel? Is it still pure opinion, or is Intel actually worth the 50%+ premium these days?

What is a good step-below-top-end video card?

Thanks in advance.

I like AMD for the price. Intel is definitely better stuff but not worth the extra cash to me. It's important to note that I'm a cheap bastard. If you want to stay under 800 or so, AMD is where it's at. 1000 dollar range... hard to say. 1000 plus... Intel's got it. I have a similar opinion on nvidia too. My system is an AMD Phenom II x4 and a Radeon HD 6950 cost around 700. I can play anything I want at high-ultimate settings at 1920x1080.

Thanks... I am looking at this Phenom 970 vs the lower end i5 ... having a tough time making up my mind
I did a shit load of research a couple months ago.

If I'm still correct i5 is the absolute best gaming chip you can buy - better than even the i7 which is more geared toward video editing than gaming.

Also any video card in the $300-350 range is the best bang for the buck. Last time I looked it was the GTX570 but i'm sure that has changed.

i5 are not better than i7 but an i5k is better than an i7.

make sure your chip has the letter K in it.

faglord
Thank you for the replies!
i5 imo.
Intel hasn't lost the edge in this market at all, if anything they have pushed amd further down below.
where the heck did that link go?
The picture wouldn't show up cause png...
Also, one great reason to really consider AMD cpus, especially on a budget, is that it allows for a better GPU, which is way more important if you ask me. But if money isn't much of a concern, go intel.

this reads like you're from the south.

stop it or -SS- will be involved.

amd is a good chip but i am also a good guy.

that is, until you get to know me. same with the chip.

Oh!! Don't be a dick, Sam! I know that will be pretty tough for you, but I have faith that you can accomplish it.

going with a cheap budget on a cpu or gpu is just setting yourself up for a big letdown in the not so distant future.

It can be. My Phenom II x4 was bought two years ago, and it's not even one of the top grade CPUs and it's still chugging along.

DF, if your going to look at AMD, look at the Phenom II x6 or the Bulldozer stuff. What I've read about bulldozer is that it can throw down like the intel stuff on games, but in other various tasks it's quite lacking.

Wait, wut?

Have you been mainlining English? I didnt think that was high enough quality fare that you are used to, dopey.

AMD has not kept up with intel in terms of performance very well at all; their latest release (bulldozer) was released only a couple months ago and the flagship model couldnt keep up with the similarly-priced i5-2500K, which has been out for quite some time (and is not the most powerful intel chip).

however, some of the lower-end AMD chips are fairly decent competitors to intel's low-end chips in terms of price vs performance. but even then, the i3-2100 is a solid low-end buy.

tl;dr: in terms of pure performance, intel wins easily. factoring in price, intel wins easily in the mid-upper range and its fairly even in the lower range.

edit: also, if you have a microcenter nearby, go with intel. microcenter has very low prices on the i5-2500K ($180 in-store) and usually has extra savings when you buy it with a p67 or z68 motherboard.

Isn't the i3 dual core only?

indeed it is, but for a lot of things that doesnt really matter. games, for example, are so far fairly poorly multi-threaded. for a budget video editing machine, though, the i3 would be a poor choice - the extra cores of a cheap 6-core AMD proc would be worth it.

the other advantage AMD has for budget builds is that the motherboards tend to be cheaper than equivalent intel boards. once you get out of the low-budget area though, intel has a solid lead. there is nothing AMD has in the consumer market that can touch the i5-2500K, to say nothing of the sandy bridge i7s and the sandy bridge-e procs (which are an entirely separate and expensive monster, albeit with an underwhelming but still expensive motherboard chipset).
