NBF: [Failboat] RP's Austrian economics

Historical capture recovered from the Wayback Machine · captured 2012-03-09 · 46 posts
Im not sure if you speak Austrian, but I thought this OpEd on RP by a "vaunted" Nobel Prize winner in economics would be compelling enough to change your mind.

Apparently the desperate search of Republicans for someone they can nominate not named Willard M. Romney continues. New polls suggest that in Iowa, at least, we have already passed peak Gingrich. Next up: Representative Ron Paul.
...
Unfortunately, Mr. Paul has maintained his consistency by ignoring reality, clinging to his ideology even as the facts have demonstrated that ideology’s wrongness. And, even more unfortunately, Paulist ideology now dominates a Republican Party that used to know better.
...
Now, it’s still very unlikely that Ron Paul will become president. But, as I said, his economic doctrine has, in effect, become the official G.O.P. line, despite having been proved utterly wrong by events. And what will happen if that doctrine actually ends up being put into action? Great Depression, here we come.

Thoughts?

I'm not an economist. I don't want to be an economist. I readily admit I have a limited understanding of economics. But, I understand basics realities. Among those basic realities are that Krugman's economics, which so far as I can tell are Keynesian, are the economics of national socialism (Keynes' words, not mine). They are also the economics that have dominated the last century of our history. Paul is all about competing, commodity-based currencies. This dude is all about a central power just printing whatever it thinks is needed (By the way, a free market doesn't exist when there is a central bank. Suck it, commies). How has that worked out for us? Best I can tell, it hasn't.

I cannot counter this man's arguments with my own because I lack the proper knowledge to do so. I can counter, however, with another person's argument, and will do so.

Peter Schiff, Tom Woods, Lew Rockwell, Ron Paul, and many other people who's arguments I read regularly makes a hell of a lot more sense than this jabroni telling us that debt is good, saving is bad, and inflation equals prosperity.

Yawn.

OpEd is obviously partisan and he clearly is in favor of status quo.

NEXT!

Austria seems to be doing okay though, right?
Are you really hinging your thread on the fact that this guy won a nobel prize? Lol, as if that means anything. Obama won a Nobel prize. He should be a great president then, right?
I'd argue that increasing the money supply sunk the Euro. There's no fucking way we are going to let in another reserve currency. I think Europe just got the fuck you stick. China is already feeling the fucking pinch. Those bitches are about to go down hard. We need to keep printing money so that these cock roaches die.

Your extremely complicated argument is appreciated.

This is about Austrian Economics, dumbass. It's an economic school of thought made popular by people who happened to be from Austria. Ever heard of Ludwig von Mises or F. A. Hayek? Yeah, it was those guys.

And to answer your retarded question, they speak Austrian German in Austria.

I was mocking Obama, while at the same time I wanted to tie to the Austrian School of economics versus the absurd and ludicrous ideas of Krugman.

Some people just cant keep up no matter how hard they try.

Oh my.........

Paul Krugman invoking history as justification.

Now that's just fucking ironic.

Despite having the Omnibus Stimulus bill shoved in his face like the ten pound New Deal dick that he clearly couldn't get enough of in college.

Despite Japan's lost decade(s) conclusively debunking his Keynesian economic bullshit once and for all...........

This idealistic ass packer has the audacity to call Ron Paul out on his economic beliefs? Unfcking real.......

This mental midget has the audacity to say that the stimulus didn't fail because it was a bullshit central planning model, that failed to produce wealth, but because it wasn't large enough?

Seriously........even the fucking Russian media is laughing at this partisan hack!!!

Why is it that everyone on Earth can sense that Paul Krugman is a colossal fucking dipshit, clearly drunk off his own idealistic kool-aid, but he can't?

Interesting idea.........except how do you kill something that you are essentially reliant on for everything that we use today?

Also, printing money creates inflation. Printint too much creates hyperinflation........inflation is a tax.

(Unless you have a great hedge, please don't say the stock market either) Inflation will vanquish everything that you have saved for retirement up to now......it will make the poor in this country poorer. It will, unless salaries increase accordingly, which they haven't for decades now, force down the average Americans standard of living drastically below where it already is.

Inflation, in my mind, is a cancer.......that only people like Paul Krugman seem to be praying to for our Keynesian salvation.

Before Krugman does what he does best (besides historical revisionism)........and turned off commentary that disagrees with him.

Prof. Krugman, you are certainly entertaining, in the same horrified sense as watching a delusional schizophrenic ignore in-your-face data and spew convoluted rationalizations as to why his pet theories, long since disproven, are still valid. You have much reason to worry for your career and influence, so I'm not surprised at your convoluted thinking and denial of reality.

Keynesianism & Monetarism are dead, and those who pay attention are just waiting on the death certificates to be issued by The Establishment; we're not going to wait around to attend a funeral, though, as we're of the opinion "good riddance". Alas, people such as yourself will continue to put lipstick on these corpses, parade them for all to see, and exclaim on their value & relevance, all the while soothingly cooing that their current malaise & non-productivity is due to lack of faith in their abilities by certain segments of the population. What rot.

I don't agree with everything Ron Paul stands for, but I certainly agree with his economic views far more than that of Keynesians or Monetarists. As such, this commentary of yours reminded me how much The Establishment needs a reality check, and inspired me to donate to Rep. Dr. Ron Paul's campaign today.

As for the NYT, I'd urge the paper to sponsor an Economic Debate between Prof. Krugman, Keynesian-propagandist extraordinaire, and one of the best bloggers with an Austrian viewpoint, Pater Tenebrarum of actingman.com.

Someone posted this gem..........

Glad to see Krugman has already been thoroughly put in his place......

We have the reserve currency. I think some people forget that it's not just America that needs that currency in circulation. We were in a position to print a hell of a lot. I heard over the next ten years the Fed will need to print over 8 trillion new dollars for world wide use. You are correct about inflation and causing a decline in standard of living. I would prefer not to have those things happen. So I think what we are doing is fucking the world by supplying more heroin/dollars so that we can keep the advantages of having the reserve currency. The only thing other country's can do about it is collect gold. They talk about creating a new currency or a block of trading partners, but when the world is getting saturated with dollars it makes it more difficult. I think when Krugman talks about growing the economy, that is what he's talking about. At least that is what I think he should be saying.

The minute we peg the dollar back to gold is the minute we lose the reserve currency. That will be a bigger fucking deal than inflating the dollar. I don't know what's better, so I have dollars and gold. Also a big fucking gun.

What you mean is that the treasury will have to print 8 trillion dollars, and then have to pay it all back with interest to the federal reserve, in the form of your taxes, even though the fed provided nothing to the equation. That's what you meant, right?

Ooooh, I missed this little gem.

How do you know that I'm a traitor? The only thing that should be apparent to anyone about either of us in this regard is that you believe free speech is treasonous.

Have you looked up the constitutional definition of treason yet? It's been several months; I figured you'd have gotten around to it by now.

Pretty much my entire time posting here I've been anti-Republican, mostly because of my knowledge of their history. I was never really pro-Democrat, but I've only come to hate them both more and more.

NBF: Macroeconomics is difficult for many to people to understand and appreciate because it's so damn dry. Or, it's just damn boring.

However, the big picture view helps regulate our trade and brings prosperity [read: jobs] in the form of goods and services due to demand. What most people dont understand [like Krugman] is the fact that increasing / decreasing the money supply has an effect on those demands. As you put more money in the system, its value decreases [money becomes 'cheap'] and increases the rate of inflation because you spend more for those same goods and services. The Feds keep track of this through the CPI - hypothetical basket of goods and services. Anyway, he's an alleged nobel winner in economics and should know this as it is the basics.

Thats an incredibly abbreviated version.

That was never why I found it inaccessible: I could never get past the fact that it's founded only on extrapolations of largely irrelevant history, and it's greatest predicting power is seeing the shitstorm the economists of the past have steered us toward once we've entered the periphery. Then, rather than acknowledging how their "science" is baseless, they use the grossly simplified models to project a chaotic system and steer toward the next, bigger shitstorm. To cap it off, we've put all our lives' work into the boat floating on a magically expanding currency controlled by the mythical money spigot of banks and governments.

Yeah, somewhere in there is where economics loses me... probably because it's akin to juggling knives while being shot at to me. Either that, or trying to stay in the eye of a hurricane...

So what would be your answer to fractional banking and a monetary unit? Bartering is nothing more than a coincidence of wants.

Also, the Wealth of Nations might interest you.
