Like a car wreck about to happen...

...you can do nothing but watch.

After Lauren comes back from taking our daughter to school, I'm going to chat with her about the concept of getting her a camera for Christmas. As much as she says this is a "must have" for her business, I just know that she won't use it because she'll say it's too difficult, doesn't take good shots as easily as her best friend's DSLR did, etc.

And we'll be out $500+.

This is what happened with the iPad that she bugged me for 2 months to get her. "I want to be able to accept credit cards at the point of purchase, show off photos demonstrating makeup techniques to brides who are indecisive, etc." In August, I plopped down $800 for a 3G iPad 2 and she has yet to get the credit card swiping device. In fact, our 3 year old uses the damn thing more than she does (and to play Angry Birds, at that).

It's like a damn car wreck. Ugh.
So what you're saying is that you are finally going to put your foot down?

probably has to ask if he can put his foot down first . .
Why not just pick up the cc swiped at a store and cancel the mail order??

I just picked up my ole ladies Ipad2 with accessories. Didn't want to take chance the shipping would get messed up.

Did you move your favorite pillow and blanket to the couch for the week?
Larry, there's an app for the iPad that you can use to process credit cards. In fact, there are quite a few. Here's one:

She has a CC terminal already. But when she's on location on the day of the wedding (or if the makeup trial isn't done here) then if the bride wants makeup for touching up after Lauren leaves (quite a frequent occurrence) then Lauren either has to run the CC when she gets home (always a risk); take a check (another risk); etc.

And, yeah, she's mentioned how she'd like to start using the iPad to take the photos. Maybe I can convince her that this is enough.

Yes, there's Square also, and a lot of others. But the transaction rates are exorbitant. Her bank (Chase) offers this service too, but so does the CC processor that she currently uses. They have the best rate of all, and they provide the equipment.

Larry how do you watch porn on the iPad and hide the evidence?

The iPad seems kind of big for all of that. I know that's what you already have so you might as well run with it, but I know Apple themselves use the iPod Touch with the CC reader attachment to do their own sales. It seems like it would be much more convenient and I'm pretty sure it has the same camera as the iPhone 4/S has, which, IIRC, are far superior to what's in the iPad.

I'm not sure if this is what you need, but I read this book and it helped me a lot.

Flash isn't supported on the iPad.

The choice of iPad over iPhone was intentional. The long term plans are:

1. Develop a backend portion of her website that allows her (and her staff, to a degree, though they don't have iPads) to do stuff like view the work calendar; update client information remotely (iPad); take photos and associate them to a wedding; etc.

2. Use the iPad to display a library of photographs that demonstrate specific makeup application styles (Vargas girl, sexy, porn star, etc.) so that brides can see examples of what the work would look like before actually going through the makeup application.

3. Finally, accept credit card purchases for retail makeup.

Number 3 could be done more easily on an iPhone, but 1 and 2 could not. This is why we went with the iPad. (I am, by the way, developing the website extensions using .NET. It's a pain in the ass to learn how to develop data-driven websites using the built in dynamic site generation facilities that are part of VS2010.)

business thought...how about increasing the price a bit and including those xtra touch ups? u would not increase it to a full fee...somewhere hald way there, or perhaps a bit more or less of halfway....you will then prolly have 100% of the peeps using that extra service they have already "insured for", total rake ins will increase, she will also have a better grip on her time, already planning on that extra time, already paid for, to be spent with the client anyways, as opposed to in promptu stuff. Then make the extra touch ups for those that did not take that option...make those unplanned unpaid touchups more expensive

just a thought.

edit: this idea will help her to get rid of the extra last minute card swipe.

The problem is one of staffing availability. In this business, if you're one of the artists (vs. being the owner) then you probably work for 2-3 or even more similar companies. And that's on top of a day job that you may have, which is probably at a salon or spa.

Add to this the fact that Lauren has such high standards for her artists and she has even less staff availability because she has less staff to begin with. (In her defense, she is a phenomenal makeup artist in her own right so she has the right to expect a lot from her contract employees.)

but, that's exactly my point....when short staffed, steady scheduling is king, with this idea at least you know what to expect, and very little last minute begging for more time/service.
Why the 3G iPad? That shits expensive, just for the data plan!

Expensive way to play Angry Birds

You're misunderstanding things.

On the day of the wedding she and whoever of her artists (if any...sometimes it's just makeup and not enough girls to justify a 2nd makeup artist) go to the location, do the hair and/or makeup, pack up, and leave. They don't hang around after the initial application (unless this was negotiated as part of the deal).

As a result, brides and bridesmaids frequently buy lipstick, etc. from Lauren to allow themselves to do touch up after the ceremony, during the reception, etc. This is what a mobile CC gateway would allow Lauren to do more easily. Her current means of processing payment is much more cumbersome and risky.

To Mack's statement, 2G/month is only $30. Lauren knows I will beat her if she streams music or video unless she's on a WiFi connection so we never exceed this amount.

$30/month x 12 months = $360/year
That's a lot of money!

Couple that to a phone (smart or otherwise), you're looking at an additional $25-$80/month...

Shit adds up! I'm a cheap bastard, and I think I'm good at it a reason!

edit:
It kills me that between the wife, the kid, and I... and the phones we have... it almost comes to $150/month just for smartphone service... fucking bastards... I can lease a shitty car for that much!

edit2:
And it bugs the hell out of me... Why should a shitty car be as expensive as a smartphone? The phone is even replaced every TWO years instead of three to five!

i get about 4 calls per day, on average, from my wife. That's 6 too many per day. Why do I want a better phone? The best phone is the one with no -ON- button, folks.
