"(Reuters) - American militants like Anwar al-Awlaki are placed on a kill or capture list by a secretive panel of senior government officials, which then informs the president of its decisions, according to officials.

There is no public record of the operations or decisions of the panel, which is a subset of the White House's National Security Council, several current and former officials said. Neither is there any law establishing its existence or setting out the rules by which it is supposed to operate.

The panel was behind the decision to add Awlaki, a U.S.-born militant preacher with alleged al Qaeda connections, to the target list. He was killed by a CIA drone strike in Yemen late last month.

The role of the president in ordering or ratifying a decision to target a citizen is fuzzy. White House spokesman Tommy Vietor declined to discuss anything about the process.

Current and former officials said that to the best of their knowledge, Awlaki, who the White House said was a key figure in al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, al Qaeda's Yemen-based affiliate, had been the only American put on a government list targeting people for capture or death due to their alleged involvement with militants.

The White House is portraying the killing of Awlaki as a demonstration of President Barack Obama's toughness toward militants who threaten the United States. But the process that led to Awlaki's killing has drawn fierce criticism from both the political left and right.

In an ironic turn, Obama, who ran for president denouncing predecessor George W. Bush's expansive use of executive power in his "war on terrorism," is being attacked in some quarters for using similar tactics. They include secret legal justifications and undisclosed intelligence assessments. . . " much more secret stuff at the link
I have no issue with Obama on this. The list needs to be expanded!

Awlaki was not a foreigner.

Also, they aren't U.S. rights. They are human rights that the Federal Government cannot infringe upon (but still do).

Oh yeah? Please point to the Consitutional basis for that claim.

It's cannot be treason because he was never charged with it, nor were the Constitutional requirements for that charge ever met.

Lol. Please show me anywhere in US constitution that gives these rights to foreigners. Your interpretation believes that. I do not. That's why it's called the "US" constitution.

Consitutional citation to support this?

Also, did Tim McVeigh give up his rights? Did OJ Simpson? Does Barack Obama give up his by his killing of Awlaki? What about Lincoln when his soldiers murdered the citizens of Baltimore? Does anyone who kills another person, American or not, surrender their rights upon being accused of killing another person?

Sure, but that can only be the case after you've been afforded your right to defend yourself against those accusations. ~~Snake~~ is saying that Awlaki and these others aren't to be afforded a trial.

His stance is:
accuse
kill
move on

First Lincoln should have killed more inbred southerners! And gotten a medal for it

Tim McVeigh was still in the US and Got death. Alwaki renounced his country and wanted to kill more than the federal govt so these cases are not even close.

I hope we expand that list though. It's one thing Obama is doing right!

Maryland never seceded. He killed citizens of a "loyal" Union State.

McVeigh got a trial first, which is the point I'm making, so thanks for conceding the illogical fallacy of your argument. When did Awlaki renounce his citizenship?

Btw, government kill lists are a justification for Hank Williams Jr.'s comparison to Hitler. Totalitarian governments love to kill people.

Killing murdering terrorists has nothing to do with totalitarian govt's. You just throw around words I don't believe you understand. The only fallacy here is you convincing yourself that Alwaki still had his rights. He was an enemy combatant and it's great to see his guts splattered across the sand.

Anything and everything that the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches do must be done in pursuance of the laws and within the limitations of the Federal Constitution. Thanks for your non-answer.

Care to try again?

I agree with the thrust of your argument in this thread, but don't extend it this far. Hank Williams didn't just compare Obama to Hitler. He compared Obama meeting with a Republican to Hitler meeting with a Jew. Usually, with the irrational Hitler comparisons, people cry that they didn't mean to compare the genocide part, just the fascism. For one, that's what you do.

But it can't be the case with Mr. Williams, who carefully and explicitly brought up the Jewish people. He was talking slowly enough that you can't argue he misspoke. Obama, he says, is just like Hitler, especially when it comes to the whole Jewish thing. Why else compare Boehner to a Jew? Obama wants to slaughter Republicans by the millions.

And why aren't people ever original in their stupid comparisons? It would at least require some creativity to leave WW2 for your heroes/villains. They could go back to Roman history. The Roman democracy in times of crisis appointed dictators with absolute power. You could make such interesting powers to the perpetual state of emergency we've been in since 9/11:

http://news.antiwar.com/2010/09/10/obama-announces-state-of-emergency-extension/

But no, that would require knowing things.

An American citizen has been deprived due process and executed.

No, going against the US government does not renounce your citizenship.

And, if it does:

FUCK THE US GOVERNMENT

There, drop a predator missle on me.
I knew Obama would love the power afforded by the Patriot Act!

NBF, I think Alrookie gave up his right to be called an American when he changed his allegiance to a foreign terrorist outfit. He surly can't be called an American by any sense of the word.

You make zero sense. If anything it's on him to denounce his citizenship and become a terrorist. He didn't do the paper work, so we should have killed him on those grounds. You are out of your fucking mind if you think that guy was an American.

You don't like the war against our enemies and are using this stupid situation to support your "guy" who thinks Obama should be on trial for murder. When I saw that, my vote just flew out the door for "your" guy. You guys are fucking pussies who think the world will love us if we don't interfere with it.

I'm with Obama and Snake on this one! You are an idiot sir!

I'm sure you would love to move all of your al qaeda buddies to your home and live with other people who hate the country.

Shut up you fool!

Albert Al Awiki (whatever) never killed anyone... He tried to show a guy how to load up some underwear... that was about it.

He just spoke out against the country and plotted to kill innocent people.

edit:
Not so much different than Charles Manson... but Manson was WHITE!

That's all, plotted to kill people.

I'm happy this government plotted to kill him.

My argument isn't about Awlaki. It's about the rule of law. As usual, the neocons can't see the forest for the trees.

All I'm saying is that he deserved a trial by virtue of his humanity (or birth, depending on point of view) and therefore by Constitutional law.

Americans are innocent until proven guilty, yes. He's allegiance was to kill Americans. In some fucked up twisted world, that means he's not an American. He choose something against our country. It wasn't just a policy difference, it was treason he took up. I don't give a shit if he had a trial. I'm not sure why any American would care about this man.

So laws protect me from you?

I feel safe!

What if it comes out that Nancy Pelosi has gone into hiding because they found proof that she plotted to bankrupt California to hurt the US economy... and she was put on the "kill list" because her actions against our nation?

We can't do that shit... it's not American

edit:
I wish we could get rid of Pelosi that way, though... still not right....

I understand your point. I don't understand how we can apply the law to someone living in another country. If we have the chance to kill this asshole planning on murdering people, then I say we take the chance to knock his fucking head off.

Would it be better to invade this country with a shit load of men and hardware to capture this guy so that he can stand trial. I don't think that highly of his rights as an American. I imagine the final conclusion was that he was a traitor.
So in the middle of a war we should call time out and tell any Americans fighting us to stop fighting while we start a trial. fucking idiots

Well... there's a LOT of shit that breaks ethical boundaries when we pull off some shit like that.

Let's say, for example, there's a French military activist hiding out in the United States calling for the French to stop being such pussies... and France sends an unmanned drone into Ohio and blows the guy up.

You think we'd be pissed at France for sending military equipment into our border and blowing shit up?

Nevermind that, because the US doesn't respect shit going down in the Middle East... Yemen doesn't matter much.

What about this guy? French military activist who writes blogs on the internet in semi-secret French military acitivism pages... He hasn't done anything but yell about the French being pussies...
no trial?

His rights are the same as ours. That's the real root of my problem. If we consulted the constitution we would find that there is a solution for this situation already. It's called a letter of marque and reprisal.

Article 1, Section 8

No, you hope he picks up a gun so you have a good excuse to shoot him... or you hope you have a good chance to fabricate what happened so you can paint yourself in a good light.

God knows why they ever allowed embedded reporters.

edit:
The Kill List will ALWAYS allow the POTUS to paint themselves in a good light.
That's how dictators get so popular when they slowly eliminate the competition.

Again... un-American.

edit2:
Al Awiki could have been an ineffectual moron.
We don't know... it wasn't until AFTER he was blown up did it come out that he trained the underwear bomber.

Really? REALLY REALLY?
They have proof he had his hands in the underwear bomber... nice!

Fuck Alabama and fuck pussies who want foreign terrorists to have US rights

Awlaki was not a foreigner.

Also, they aren't U.S. rights. They are human rights that the Federal Government cannot infringe upon (but still do).
He lost his rights when he went to war against us. And no they are not human rights

Awlaki was not a foreigner.
And he gave up his rights when he killed US citizens.

Yes, they pretty much do surrender them all. Not all but most.
