that photo is a little risque. she's pretty close to a wardrobe malfunction.
Montreal Grand Prix in 2007
Moving Car, high Rez of that picture is very good, you see all the details and the car was at the end of a strech, just about to brake.

This one is my Daughter in 2006, she was 6 yrs old.
I love this shot.

What MP did you use for the car? The fact that the car itself isn't blurry is mind-blowing.

it's more about panning than about megapixels.

The right is more virtuous than the left. They have twice as many virtues because they have double the standards.

I understand that. But there is no way that you're going to pan at the same rate that the car is traveling especially if it is decelerating. So the way you make up for that is to show in high-res and use the Sharpen > Unsharp Mask function to fix the edges.

if you are good at panning, you can do pretty darn good - or hit the jackpot on a shot.

it's a skill-set for sure or a lucky break.

unsharp mask can go so far. although with some serious photochopping, you could do pretty good with a slightly blurry subject. but it would require some good masking skills for sure.

It doesn't have to be exactly at the same rate. It just has to be close enough where the difference in speeds can be captured by the shutter speed. (i.e. if the car is going 100 mph and you turn the camera such that the focus field or whatever it's called is going 85 mph then it's as if the car is only going 15 mph and I am guessing you can take a crisp picture of a car going only 15 mph)

Disclaimer: I know next to nothing about photography.
BB: you bring up a good point and I agree with you, but the photo in question makes it look like the car is standing still and the background is what is moving. That takes skill.

I'm no photographer, I just love playing around with that panoramic thing my wife's camera does.

I like to think I'm good but there is also some luck involved. This is the best shot out of 100-200 shots from that day. I have other cars where you see the breaks light up, but the car is not as clear. :-(

This shot is also no cropped !! I centered it (horizontally and vertically) at high speed....So I'm either good at timing this or I got lucky twice on the same picture :-)

I followed the car from as far as I could see it and once in front I snapped it while continuing my movement. Nice constant sliding movement and voila !

I knew what to do but do not do this everyday so it took me a few shots and a little bit of luck. :-)

But still one of the best picture I ever took.

i wasn't talking about your shot specifically, i was just talking about when you see great panning results in general - but that it is actually done by the photographer with the camera, not with crazy photomanips with either skill or luck.

generally peaking, it's usually a skill learned from practice like you have done.

i personally suck at panning. i could try to take the shot you took 100 times and probably not get it once.

sorry if i posted too many, I tried to pick out some favorites I think I have some better pictures on my actual flickr but I am not a real photographer and those are still my favorites even if they all aren't the highest quality or best stuff. The mexico / chichen itza pictures were done on a throw away disposable camera that had already expired (was one of those cameras you got at the wedding table my family accidentally stole while drunk at the dinner from like 2002.)

The Oslo pictures posted are mostly with some pretty expensive cameras I think Flickr maybe has that information for them. Winston's pictures were done on some random shit digital camera.

Just good panning & a smoking fast shutter speed & rolling off a ton of pics on it in a row & picking out the best one.

Thanks.

Dec 07 - Jan 08 is when I went between New Zealand and Australia (has the best new years show).

I may go back down for two weeks this Christmas, but it all depends on my (police) academy schedule. I have family from my grandmother's side which is dotted all over between NZ and Aus so it works out well for me.
