Sony

Read up on the reviews of those cameras on Steve's

http://www.steves-digicams.com/

They're both excellent cameras... Sony now has the advantage of being able to plug the proprietary card into a PSP or something...
Canon's are top of the line... and the SD cards are pretty much universal now... so if you get another camera, you can use that card to crossover several brands of camera.

I prefer Canon.
The biggest factors to consider when buying a digital camera now are:

1. The optics. Carl Zeiss > * hands down.
2. The speed with which images are captured by the CMOS or whatever technology they are using. Unfortunately, this isn't listed.

Contrary to popular belief, the MP count is irrelevant beyond 5MP for all but professional work.

I'm a Sony person, myself. I'm on my 2rd Sony DSC camera and have loved them both. (The ex-wife got the first one. She bought a second one, a newer model, since then.)

I highly prefer Canon to any other brand. Either one you choose, the photographer makes the shot, not the camera. For average every day photo use, either one will work perfectly for you so long as you, the photographer, know what to do.

I work in a lab and too many people come in with SLRs and very advanced point-and-shoots and their pictures still show very poor composition. The camera did all it can, but it might as well be made by Fisher-Price because the poor fool who spent their money on it has no idea how to make a great photo.

well i bought the canon, it is on its way from the amazon warehouse along with an extra battery and a sd card. all together with shipping it cost less than $300 which is incredible cause the same camera at a shop in the town next to me cost 299 for just the camera.

I got a chance to handle the sony and while i liked it i did not like the layout of the dials and buttons, my thumb rested on the scene selection dial which i did not like. also i did not want to buy memory stick duo cards, my laptop has an sd slot.

thanks for the imput, i look forward to my new camera
My 2 cents on the original two suggestions.

I have trouble taking a steady photo with those box shaped cameras. I avoid them unless its was just for point & shoot family stuff.

SD is a good choice: it's inexpensive and used by a number of companies.

Although I resisted it, SD looks like its primarily won out over compact flash. There are also some incredible small form factors for SD that can use adapters to still be used in the older form factors.
