Info on California

Historical capture recovered from the Wayback Machine · captured 2008-05-26 · 22 posts
I was looking for some information on California, southern Cali in particular. Preferably from someone who either currently lives, or has lived, there or someone who has spent a considerable amount of time in the area(month or more stretch). I will be arriving there on Monday in the pm, for a job interview in Palmdale, and leaving Wednesday in the am so I don't know how much I can see in that short period of time. I guess I'm looking for information on things such as area in general, insurance costs, housing costs, utilities, etc.

I would really like objective input and I have read the current threads regarding California so please don't say "see thread such and such about how crappy the traffic is", "California allows gay marriage so blah blah blah", or "California sucks". I have already checked out a few city compare sites but I would really like to hear some thoughts from people who have actually experienced the area.

On a side note I currently live in NY, southern tier region to be exact. So if you have been to California, and can make a good comparison to this region, that would be helpful as well. Thanks.
Meet my friend GAS....
wow, palmdale. you're basically in the middle of nowhere. while prices from houses are okay in that area, you're far from doing anything fun.

Not that far. Canyon country has 6 Flags.

Go a little further down the I-14 to 405 / 5 interchange the all of LA would be his oyster.

I bet he is interviewing for a job at Plant 42. Whatcha think?
Palmdale is an area where many people who work in LA opted to buy a home because it is affordable in every way and the school system is good.

Major aerospace city, you got a major Lockheed plant where the most top secret Black projects are built, Edwards AFB which is the second largest NASA operation in the country.

I love Cali and its hard to find a New Yorker who actually moved back to NY after coming to Cali.

Palmdale isn't exactly the most fun place at night and it is not so close to LA, just want to warn you. At nigth with no traffic its probably around 40 mins to Hollywood.

Are you interviewing for Lockheed?

Plant 42 is the strongest runway in the world, made to withstand an 8.5 earthquake.
With that earthquakes in China and Japan recently? Something bad is gonna happen... unless the shift over there was a response to the earthquake in LA back in '94...

Something's gonna happen... one day.

It used to make me laugh to watch a bunch of people hang out on the west end of the runway next to Sierra Highway waiting for a glimpse of the new stuff rolling out.

California has always been regarded as a plentiful land of fruits and nuts.......

Fortunately, I think we have a pretty strong lock on that title even without our agricultural sector.

Lots of commies, marxists, gay mafia, and little known to the rest of America you also have the largest concentration of Neo-Nazis as well but both of those are north and south respectively of LA so it doesn't bother me

It was New Yorkers who "tamed" Southern California starting in the 1930's and many are still making their way here.

LA is perfect weather (other then the worst smog in America). I hate cold, rain, snow and I like my winters not very wintery

I like watching silicon women walk by, my Lakers, and our celebrity governors and high speed pursuits everyday.

Thanks for the info everyone. I know looking at the google map it looks "close" to LA, now with the LA traffic I know it's not as close as it may seem. I'm not as young as I used to be so the night life doesn't really mean that much to me but I do want to be somewhere that has something to do. If you have ever been to Binghamton NY you know what I mean. I don't mind the loction, in the desert that is, but I like it's proximity to the big city of LA. I'm staying in Valencia when I go out so I should get a look at the region when I drive over to Palmdale and the drive from LAX to Valencia should be interesting. I'm thinking when I get out there I'm not gonna want to come back so if they offer me something it will shoot to the top of my list.

It's not Lockheed but it is at plant 42.

Seriously ftw….because it’s not like this region gets more destructive hurricanes than California does earthquakes.
lol. You keep your tornaders n hurricanes. I'll take my chance with the "big quake" they've been predicting forever.
Palmdale is a desert! Hot as hell, dry and windy!

Housing is more affordable.
Mammoth mountain is about 4 1/2 hours away. Good skiing!
If you like the outdoors, you are about 2-3 hours away from the Southen Sierras. Lots of hiking, fishing, camping, etc..
If you are working in LA, morning and afternoon traffic can be 1-2 hours. There is a train I believe that you can use instead.
If you dont mind summers living in a furnace and cold windy dry winters in a vast brown enviornment, Palmdale is the place to be.

Then again, you have all of LA very close by for fun!

Good luck!

I will be working in Palmdale so I'm looking for a place that is about a 30-45 minute drive. I was looking as far as California City because I want to stay on the Palmdale side of the mountains. I did find a couple of rentals in the Lake Hughes area but I will have to check that out when I get there. The cold windy winter has to beat the freezing snowy winter in NY and the summer heat I'll have to get used to. I'll be there in less than 35 hours so I'll able to experience it first hand. I feel like a little kid on Christmas, I'm so excited!
...prepare for 70's all year round

...hours away from Vegas

...hours away from Lake Havasu -- SPRING BREAK!

...Governor with an Austrian accent

...hours away from Yosemite

...but your 1 hour or less drive from Palmdale. cities with tons to do.

(I'm about 4 hours north of there)

I like tornadoes, you can at least predict if they might happen and hurricanes you can gtfo before they come into shore...earthquakes not so much

Who wants to go storm chasin with me?

You could probably get a home in the north end of the San Fernando valley in such areas as Mission Hills, Granada Hills, etc. While the North San Ferndando Valley is not as nice as the lush green south end, it would put you at about 40 miles from your work Blunt and would leave you about 25 minutes from Hollywood or Downtown LA with no traffic.

House prices are dropping in the Valley although not as fast as in the rest of the Cali and there are some lovely areas in Granada Hills.
Wow who left the furnace door open in Palmdale? So I returned from my trip and I loved it! It was 92 yesterday but it felt like it was around 80, and that was standing on the nice hot asphalt in the mojave desert. However, it did take me over an hour to go from Ventura Blvd to Sunset on Monday afternoon because of a disabled vehicle. The guys I met with were funny as hell and they did like to poke fun at me since I was wearing a suit, and tie, and they all wore jeans and tee shirts. All in all I could see myself relocating to the area.
