Anyone else in here looking to play Age of Conan?

Historical capture recovered from the Wayback Machine · captured 2008-05-26 · 134 posts
I've been *cough* checking *cough* NDA *cough* into Age of Conan for a while now, and it's shaping up to be a solid game.

Is there anyone else out there that's interested in playing it? If so, are you clanless? We plan on starting on a RP-PvP server, so there's always safety in numbers. Hit up this thread if you plan on trying it out.

I have been planning to try it out since I saw clips of it a year ago, I would definitely be interested in joining on the same server.

What is the release date now?
I am thinking about it. I don't think my pc can handle it though. I am running a pent 2.4C.
I might look into it Fluff, if my laptop can handle it. I'm taking it with me to Iraq, so i hope it has a solid SP story/gameplay. Also...Get the site up! I'm anxious to see how it looks! Hope all is well.

RP-PvP?
What're you... NUTS?

I want to be able to name a toon "Kammelteau" or something... and I want to be able to call people "n00bs", or joke around in Barrens Chat or some shit.

Do that on an RP server, and people start pinching thier a-holes.

Normal PvP, or nothing. RP is ghey.

Like you never cybered with a NE in the Underground Tram, or in a tent in Mulgore.
Nope.

When you got a lvl 12 Blood Elf banker named "Doodytoo" in a guild called "WoWchovia"... you tend not to cyber.
Mack! I hate your new name

Trust me, the gankage will be insane on normal PvP servers. As it stands now, there are loading zones. Imagine loading into a new zone, only to find 15 ROFLOWNZORDOODS pummeling you as you load in.

I've chosen the RP-PvP server because of the mature playerbase.

DF, if you are interested, sign up and keep an eye on our forums: http://forums.ignoblegaming.com

Would love to have you!

Any for anyone else that thinks their PC can't handle it, if your computer can handle Oblivion, it can handle AoC.

My GF and I actually pre-ordered the game with several other people that I used to play tribes with- some from WoW as well. I anticipate problems the first couple of months but that's to be expected with any MMO- especially one so anticipated. Because of the potential in this game, we'll be sticking it out while they work out the bugs.

We should definitely all pick a server to play on.
Whatever you do, don't pick a FFA-PvP server to play on. The game isn't meant to have FFA-PvP enabled. Trust me on this one....

it's almost summertime, why get into an MMO now?

Can you imagine doing an instance, and accidentally ganking your healer?

I'm hoping an RP enviroment will keep the immature gank squad players and guilds out of the equation. Just imagine, loading into a zone, and as soon as you load in, your rez screen is popped up. Now, since the way the game handles rezzing, you load to rez. Imagine what happens next. That's right, ganked again by another group of 6. Rinse, repeat, until you either log out, or play another character.

They won't be able to get away with that on an RP server.

We should definitely pick a single server to play on. Keep an eye on my forums: http://forums.ignoblegaming.com and we can all stay on the same page as far as that's concerned.

Well, I can't speak for everyone, but the way I see it is even if you can only play sporadically, at least by the time fall and winter come around you will have an established toon or two.
I wouldn't mind trying something other than WoW, but in these kind of PvP MMO's I've always played stealth classes.

I've read the stealth class in AoC is very different, that you don't just run around in stealth, you really have to sneak around, it depends on the lighting, places to hide, abilities of other people to detect stealth, etc.

Which sounds interesting on the surface, at least to folks who don't like WoW's press-a-button-and-youre-in-stealth-ZOMG! system.

BUT...I can foresee problems with this system in PvP, and Fluffy correct me if it doesn't work this way ingame...

Seems in PvP stealth would be useless. Many times people are in the open and running around. In AoC's system, is it even possible to stealth to them? What if you have to drop down a ledge or something to get to them, is it going to unstealth you?

In WoW, you have Vanish which (when it works) gives you a chance to re-enter stealth and get away even when surrounded by a group of enemies. Is there any mechanic like that in AoC? Or once you're out of stealth in a group of 2 or more, you're dead?

From what I've read, stealth in AoC is limited to pure 1-on-1 encounters where the stealther doesn't have to move too much to get to the target. That might be okay for PvE, but for PvP where people are constantly moving around, and in groups, it just seems too limiting.

I'd like to be proven wrong, as I'd like a 2nd game to play in addition to WoW, but I won't play anything other than a stealth class, and the stealth mechanics in AoC from what I've read just seem too restrictive.

I play these games for the fun factor, I couldn't care less about realism. AoC's system might be more real, but is it FUN? And more than that, is it FUN in a PvP environment? Because I'm not really a PvE player, I only care about PvP. PvE to me is just a way to level up to do PvP.

Thoughts?

I'm afraid to leave WoW...

It's a game that I still enjoy. It has it's ups and downs, but I'm comfortable playing it.

New is scary... but AoC is pretty. How much is the monthly?

Yes, it will unstealth you. However, this is a good thing, since playing an assassin/barbarian class is actually going to seperate the men from the boys. Any noob can play a rogue in WoW, but only the really skilled will shine. Same goes here. HOWEVER, ALL classes can stealth to some degree. Even a mage. However, unlike the rogue archtypes (Assassin/Barbarian/Ranger) they used Stamina when stealthing. So they'll run out. And in AoC, when you run out of Stamina, you run out of breath. Which gives you a -100% chance to evade, movement penalties, etc.

Here's the deal with Assassins...

There is no "Vanish" like in WoW. Once you pop out, you pop out and proceed to ginsu knife your opponents. However, when Funcom says they are the highest DPS class of them all, they weren't kidding. With the proper skill, feats, etc. you can easily take on multiple opponents. For instance, near the last levels, there's a feat that allows you to confuse an opponent (Player or NPC) which as a player, makes your friend next to you look like the attacker. They WILL start attacking their friend thinking they are you. Some really funny shit to watch. Trust me.

Assassin's have a LOT of burst DPS, but are squishy too. Oh, and we also get to use a crossbow at level 5, where all other classes get it at 50. Except the ranger, obviously.

Nope, it's not like that at all. It may be a bit harder to stealth around (Using bushes, don't stand next to a torch, all common sense shit) but your movement rate is about 90% normal movement. You move quick as shit in stealth. Only problem I can see is, if your target is sprinting around (But that uses Stamina, so they can only sprint around for a few seconds at a time)

I used to think so too, before I had to sign a particular agreement which I am not allowed to speak of *cough*, and I'm not worried at all anymore. I was a rogue in WoW too, and I love rogue classes. AoC assassin's are fun to play. Trust me.

Same as WoW. I don't know if WoW does this, but, AoC will offer 3 months of gametime for $30.00.

Oh, and if you pre-ordered, the 3-day headstart starts this Saturday.

Thanks for the info - that makes me feel a lot better about the class, as I was hoping it was more fun than some of the comments made it out to be. I didn't know about the limit on people sprinting, moving at 90%, highest DPS (which rogues in WoW were supposed to have but don't), ability to confuse, etc. I can see where that helps balance things out.

I saw a preorder box for it the other day at Best Buy. When's it coming out? I assume since the NDA hasn't been lifted yet, it's still a few weeks off?

EDIT: I just saw your last comment...so if you get the preorder now, you can start for real this coming Sat? Not just a test toon that gets wiped on release, but you can actually start your real toon this Sat?

Ganking people is the whole point of a PvP server. I love flying around Outlands and killing unsuspecting Alliance while they are trying to quest.
Hey fluffy, are you in a guild for AoC? My GF and our friends from WoW will play as much as possible (most of us are selling or have sold our accounts from WoW to my knowledge). My time for the game will be dictated by my lab, work and classes- Still, I'll be on as much as possible...to regain my sanity.

We are all still undecided as to what server to join and whether or not we want to join a guild or create one. I am just a mere follower though heh. If you all have something going just let me know and I'll forward it to the other people so we can all give this a go =)

Besides I've posted here for years w/o actually playing any other games than tribes with you all. Should be fun.

I'd definitely be willing to give it a go, as long as it's a PvP server. I refuse to play on a PvE server. Whether it's RP or not doesn't matter to me.

Fluffy...do you already know the server, team (if there is such a thing), etc, that you'll be playing on?
Subroutine, Neechoo, and DF, I will be very much pleased if you'd join us in the guild along with your friends. They are more than welcome.

They haven't released server names yet, but I've been board trolling those forums more than I do here, if that tells you anything. As soon as I find out the name of the server, I'll let everyone know on my forums, as well as my website. The following is all the info you'll need:

Forums: http://forums.ignoblegaming.com

Website (still under contruction. wife is reworking graphics. should be done in the next day or two.): http://aoc.ignoblegaming.com

Teamspeak:

IP: http://teamspeak.ignoblegaming.com:8786
Pass: ninja

Sign up for the forums, and get on Teamspeak if possible. We'll try to get the server picked and ready to go as soon as possible for the Headstart this Saturday. We already have around 10 members, and if you guys decide to come in, it'll make it the more merrier.

There are no teams per say. You can be 1 of 3 races, and that about sums it up. I plan on being a Stygian race, if that makes a difference to you.

Yup, I love doing that too. However, we are talking about griefers, not gankers. I can handle being attacked while I'm questing. No problem. What I can't handle, is zoning in, dying before I even see who's attacking me, rezzing, and dying before my game loads me back in the world.

That's just fucking lame. No way around it.

And I don't mind RP'ing to get in a server full of mature gamers, that won't do lame shit like that. Funcom has mentioned they WILL be moderating the RP server, and removing those that don't do it.

Signing up for forums now. lol I haven't had Teamspeak since MOHAA.

My current computer will not run this game, but I just got some money recently and will be buying the components I need to get me rolling this week or next.

I think my mobo will actually be okay - I just need to replace the processor and vid card and I think I will be straight.

How do we get the game client in time for the Head Start? The only boxes I saw at Best Buy were pre-orders with no actual disks in them.

Is the client available for download or something?

Yes, you should get a code in your pre-order box that allows you to create an account, and download the 13GB client.

Cool, I'll try to pick up a pre-order box in the next couple days and start DL'ing the client.

Fluffy, you'll appreciate this having played WoW...all I do is BGs, I don't raid or do arenas or anything. So I made up my mind I want my Conqueror title. Been farming WSG for days now and just hit Revered with Outriders. Another 21,000 rep to go, LOL. So I think AoC would be a welcome break from all that rep grinding.
Fluffy, I just called my neighborhood mom and pop computer store I have been going to for years and he said he has a used AMD Athlon dual-core 4000+ he will sell me for $30, so all I really need to buy is a card and I think I should be straight.

It has been a looong time since I shopped for cards, point me in the right direction. Something cheap(under say $200 would be nice), because I am going to build a whole new rig sooner or later
I'll be playing it.

Hopefully this isn't as disappointing as Vanguard.

edit: here is my most recent AoC post on these forums. Nice to find a game that sticks to its release date.

wait and see until after AOC gets out of beta and see the benchmark results - since they probably still have to do some video optimizations that may alter what brand card to get. what card you get can vary by game as some are better on ATI and some rae better on nvidia.

right now for under 200 u got the 8800GT (with a dual slot or higher end single slot cooler or the ati 3870 to pick from, or the 9600GT but i would pick from the former two)

also new cards are comin out soon from both card makers, which is close enough where it might be wise to wait. i mean you can keep waiting for the next release and wait forever, but this is quite close so its not so bad to hold out a lil bit.
