Hillary will destroy OPEC

Historical capture recovered from the Wayback Machine · captured 2008-05-06 · 20 posts
Clinton's attacks on oil prices as artificially inflated, Enron-style, keep escalating, and today she appeared to threaten to break up the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

"We’re going to go right at OPEC," she said. "They can no longer be a cartel, a monopoly that get together once every couple of months in some conference room in some plush place in the world, they decide how much oil they’re going to produce and what price they’re going to put it at," she told a crod at a firehouse in Merrillville, IN.

"That’s not a market. That’s a monopoly," she said, saying she'd use anti-trust law and the World Trade Organization to take on OPEC.

Clinton has cast herself as a warrior for working people against the oil industry and malicious "speculators," and made that -- along with her push for a gas tax holiday -- central to her closing message in Indiana.

It's a potent message, like the attack on "Wall Street money brokers," with deep roots in American politics. It' It's also very hard to figure out what exactly she means by the threat to break OPEC.

UPDATE: The Obama campaign points out that Clinton has not signed on to cosponsor a bill that aspires "to make oil-producing and exporting cartels illegal."

Another couple nickels and dimes and she'll win those voters over just like Bush.
What is the over/under on her eventually promising to cure cancer if elected?
Her and her husband are so obviously on the take from elements of the middle east, this is substandard for even normal Clinton pandering.

The Clintons are very close with the UAE sheiks. Just as the Bushes have been very close to the House of Saud the Clintons have developed a very close relationship with the Sheiks in Dubai.

Don't you remember in a sort of embarrasing moment during the "PortGate Scandal" that Sen. Hillary was criticizing Bush for giving the port deal to a UAE company while at the same time Bill Clinton was publicly supporting the deal and lobbying congressmen for the deal.

I'm not defensive about Clinton, merely inquiring as to what elements you were talking about.

Are you accusing the obama campaign of being "dishonest"?

Hrmm...Dubai??? Less than 6% of Dubai's income comes from oil revenues.Dubai has almost been pumped dry. Dubai's income comes from trade and finance. Killing OPEC would hurt Dubai, not help it.

Yeah, it is a shame when every major politician, imo, has to pander to them too. It is a funny line they balance though between them and those on the Israeli front. Although, I trust Clinton (either of them) over Bush anyday in holding diplomatic ties with any semblence of the US making out in some way. That said, I wish we would keep them (Saudi's, etc.) at a pole's distance instead of tossing their salads.

well, Dubai and Abu Dabi have poured a large amount of cash into creating tourism infrastructure. A Ski Resort in the desert, islands in the shape of trees, what amounts to a very big tent hotel.

with trends towards desalinization and nuclear energy, and give 3 to 5 more years, i think the UAE could come relatively unharmed from a dissolution of OPEC.

At the moment, i think they would be hurt but it would be somewhat offset their alternate incomes.

[to jump back on topic]
breaking up or even declaring OPEC illegal sounds really nice to people who are pissed of at gas prices. it's a really nice fireworks rocket at this stage of the gameelection.

OPEC isn't just a group of oil companies, it's a group of countries. sovereign countries who might not appreciate a 3rd party dictating how they deal with other sovereign countries.

declare oil production cartels illegal?

...

you know canada produces oil. Is the US going to declare it's illegal for canada to get a good price on it's oil? if so how will the US inforce this "illegality"?

this is a fireworks rocket, lotsa bang and pretty lights that make you go ohhhh for a few seconds till the next pretty popping light.

So true.

Not even saying I'm immune to the pretty lights, but I would love to see Hillary Clinton successfully dismantle OPEC. And by that I mean do nothing and hope we forget.
ROFL!

How fucking rediculous.

Any American politician who thinks the US stands a chance in hell of dismantling OPEC is a fucking dumbass.

Whether we like it or not, the oil is THEIR resource, OPEC is THEIR cartel, and their cartel setting the prices for their resource is THEIR right.

Clinton's statements about dismantling OPEC, and anybody else's that are similar, is pandering, pure and simple. I have no doubt there are voters out there who will believe it and eat that shit up, which means they're pretty fucking stupid.
I wish I had a hillary clinton sex tape.

Everyone who handles oil benefits from its high price as they seem to do a percentage markup and not a fixed markup.
