Third Party Defrag utility recommendations?

Historical capture recovered from the Wayback Machine · captured 2008-05-06 · 11 posts
Can anyone recommend a good third party defragger? Prefer freeware of course, but list any that you might have used, and where to get them.

Thanks!

Hmmm, not sure about freeware but System Mechanic always did a good job for me when i had it. Overall it is kind of a bloated app though. You could get a try a trial copy at http://www.iolo.com/SM/7/pro/download.aspx

I use Diskkeeper, but its not free.

I have also used http://www.cnet.com.au/downloads/0,239030384,10612462s,00.htm

Its not bad, but I still prefer diskkeeper.

It sucks

Diskeeper and Raxco's PerfectDisk are the two best, but neither are free.

The best free one is:

I think it's the same thing as TC's link, just to the company's site.

Can you be a bit more specific? I've never had any troubles with it and it does what it's supposed to do: defragment the disk.

Are there other features / functionality that people need from such an application that I just don't know about?

There are several problems with XP's, nothing major. It's slow as hell. Plus it is a simplistic defrag. It doesn't take into account file access. A good defrag not only defrags but it places commonly accessed files in a position that makes them quicker to access. XP's defrag just defrags the hard drive as a whole. A good defrag will also defrag system files that are normally locked during normal operation, like the paging file. You can only defrag that at boot time. Some will defrag the registry also. Scheduling is alot easier with third-party defrag's also.Plus third party defrags doa better job of consolidating free space.

By far, Diskeeper is one of the best. It will 'pad' the MFT with additional space so that as the MFT grows space is already reserved rather than grow as needed, which cause fragmentation on other files.

If all your concerned about is simple defrag, then XP's is fine. But, using a decent third-party can boost access times as much as 10-20%, it'll speed the boot process, and will keep the frequency of defraging alot lower.

What you see built into Windows is basically Diskkeeper lite 1.0. ITs very limited, slow and does a mediocre job of defragging.

one other thing. If you use OUtlook its a fragmentation nightmare. Defragging that file alone usually makes a huge difference.
