I just got a new job in Birmingham and am moving away from home for the first time. I start my new job in two weeks and my last day at my current job is two fridays from now. I need to find an apartment quickly because commuting from home to Birmingham will cost nearly as much as renting and will also add about 3 hours of driving to each day.

Do any of you have an tips or advice for apartment hunting or moving in general? I've waited for this for a long time and now that it is here and I have such a small time frame for ending one job and starting another that I could use any advice that would help make this a quicker transition.

Thanks.

I just realized I misspelled moving. I'm such a retard...

Ask your company if they have any resources for finding places to live, etc. Some companies have internal bulletin boards where employees can post "roommate wanted" ads.

Craigslist and the classifieds from your local paper are the best way to find an apartment. I like using craigslist because most ads come with a picture, unlike the classifieds. Picking a good neighborhood is an important consideration.

How far do you currently live from there?
If you're talking only hours away, then why don't you look at the local paper online for that area & pick out a few places you think you'd like to see, then call them and arrange a meeting date on your day off & go down there on your day off with several of these lined up. Stay in a hotel that night & decide which one best suits you & finalize your rental agreement in the morning then you head back home. Done in a day & a half.

It's about 80 miles from my house to my new job.

That's basically what I have planned. I'm just worried about rushing into something when I might be able to find a better deal. That's just me being a cheapass, I guess. Thanks for the help.
Spend that money. Live it up, it won't do you any good when you're dead & gone.

Move in with a local stripper, that is always best-case scenario.

What type of job? See if you can get some sort of per diem out of them and just stay in a hotel until you find something you like, or not. Per diem is pretty big in the company that I currently work for, gives $150 a day if you are over 150 miles away from your residence.
