NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A man who has been indicted on charges of illegally possessing up to $1 million worth of Jack Daniel's whiskey claims he is a collector who was trying to sell the vintage bottles they came in, not the spirits.

Randy Piper of Goodlettsville was indicted on four counts related to the illegal possession, sale, transportation and storage of the liquor.

Officials seized 2,400 bottles last October after receiving a tip that someone was selling alcohol without a license. They raided two warehouses owned by Piper and a home in Lynchburg where the famous Tennessee sipping whiskey is distilled.

The value of the seized liquor has possibly been driven up by the value of the antique bottles.

Piper told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he has been collecting Jack Daniel's bottles for about six years.

Piper's attorney, Raymond Fraley Jr. of Fayetteville, said his client was singled out for selling one bottle for approximately $350 and charged with illegally possessing all the others.

So.. this poor guy has been collecting antique bottles of JD... one bottle is from 1914... and he's indicted for illegally storing, selling, transporting, etc.

Well HELL! What would be cooler than having a bottle of 1914 Jack Daniels? Not much... shit, that's so friggin' cool!

Poor guy... GREAT idea... Stupid laws...
Ugh! Can you imagine making that kind of investment, and the gov't confiscates it?

The state's Alcoholic Beverage Commission has said state law may require it to pour some of the whiskey down the drain.

if they pour the 1914 whiskey down the drain, then its a sad day.
"What would be cooler than having a bottle of 1914 Jack Daniels?"

Well, having a bottle of whiskey that doesn't taste like pickled shit would be cooler.

My non-political signature goes here
Who said drink it?

It's like that bottle of liquor my old man got for me when they went to SE Asia... It's from Vietnam... and there's a pickled cobra and a scorpion in the thing... I'm not drinking that shit... but it's cool.
Christ wtf that is retarded! >.<

I saw them make the cobra stuff on a "Gross food" special on nat geo HD last week. They soak the snake in pure alcohol in the bottle for 90 days, drain it off and fill the bottle back up with rice wine. Those asians eat/drink some wierd stuff man

That's just plain bullshit. Not only were taxes already paid for those bottles of Jack, now they take away the man's investment because he doesn't want to pay thousands of dollars a month for a fucking special license.

This Govt. of ours is more fucked up then people think. Land of the free my hairy white ass.

Heh. I wish more people recognized that fact. If they did, Ron Paul would win the presidency easily.

With a bit of luck and a decent lawyer he could beat this. If every bottle is different it'll be obvious to the courts it's a private collection just like any other private collection. If the cops destroy it they'll be up for the cash value + damages. They can't burn a Van Gogh because they "think" it's a fake. It must be proven first and if they do they gotta pay for their vandalism.

At least... that's how it'd work in this country. This guy is prolly already fucked.

In this country we elect failed baseball managers and B-list actors to the highest office. Although I think American authorities might be more lenient for the whiskey...but kiss that Van Gough good bye.
I love this guy already
Is it just me or am I the only one here who knows you are required by law to have a license in order to sell alcohol?

His own dumbass fault. Just like having to get a permit to build shit, if you don't have one, the city will knock your shit down. Sucks but its the law.

I agree. Although I feel bad for the guy, its pretty clear that you cant just sell 2,400 bottles of whiskey just like that.

But I think the point that's trying to be made here is, that he was selling the collector value of the bottles, not the alchohol itself. Therefore, he shouldn't have to pay a thousand dollars a month for a liquor license. Those licenses aren't cheap, and they aren't a one time cost either. It's pretty silly to have to pay for a license when you are selling the worth of the bottles, not just booze.

HOWEVER....

Since I admit I'm not a lush, and don't know shit about drinking or booze, if people usually pay big money for old liquor, and he's just using the bottles as an excuse to do so, then fine his ass for trying to get off on a technicality. I know that wines for example sell more the older they are. If the same applies for Jack Daniels....

Then again, Fluffy's idea of being a lush is drinking two buttery nipples while at home. "Bring on the naked CoD4 NPCs! HARRRRRR!"

I agree, for some reason i dont think the bottles would be worth as much empty. So its important that he sells the bottles with the alchohol still in them. That would be considered as selling alchohol without a license. Of course he could drain the bottles and sell them if thats what he really is trying to do. Its a grey area.

The gray area for me would be if the alcohol was actually consumable. Or what are the intentions of the buyer. It would seem ludicrous to me if they charge him for selling alcohol, that isn't necessarily alcohol any more.. Or something nobody in their right mind would drink..

If he is selling perfectly fine liquor, that someone can consume and get intoxicated off of, it is easy to assume it will be.
