anyways, so as some of you know, my school got a really good computer for high performance computing (its probably going to be most utilized by the computational physics classes). im using gentoo linux, and im monitoring CPU load/temp with gkrellm, but unfortunately gkrellm doesnt show CPU clock speed. ive done some overclocking with the CPU (i have the FSB set to 1600MHz, up from the stock 1066MHz on the CPU (board supports 1066/1333)), but im not sure that its actually taking, since the BIOS doesnt say the CPU is running at 3.6GHz... it just gives the stock 2.4GHz rating. plus, im kinda suspicious because im supposedly running a C2Q Q6600 with a 50% overclock at stock voltage (1.825V or thereabouts, i forget exactly and dont have direct access to the machine atm). google doesnt seem to be giving me any help, so does anyone here know of any linux utilities that can monitor CPU/FSB clock speeds/voltages?

and for those of you that are interested, my setup is:
Core 2 Quad Q6600 (supposedly @ 3.6GHz)
8GB (4x2GB) A-DATA DDR2-800 RAM
ASUS P5N32-E SLI Plus nForce 650i/570 (supposedly @ 1600MHz)
128MB MSI GeForce 7300LE PCI-e x16
768MB PNY GeForce 8800GTX PCI-e x16
2x160GB 7200RPM Hitachi SATA-II HDD
Antec 900 Case (3x120mm fans, 1x200mm fan)
Antec True Power Quattro 850W PSU
Tuniq Tower 120 HSF
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound

and my temps are 28C 28C 21C 22C idle and 46C 45C 35C 37C at full load. to be fair, its in a machine room with an AC that keeps the room at a constant 70F (~21C).

any help would be much appreciated! and if you know of any linux benchmarking utilities, thatd be great too

I use "SensorView Pro 3.1" for voltages and fan speeds, temp, etc.

You cant change your clock speed in BIOS?

well yes i can, and it says the FSB is 1600 (as it should be), but it doesnt seem like its actually like that... anandtech.com for example couldnt get a QX6700 past 1440MHz FSB on the same board as im using, and they had the same heatsink and actually messed with voltages. ive done nothing with voltages except manually set them to stock (instead of auto) and im at 1600FSB stable on the first try. so either i have a ridiculously good mobo/cpu, linux is just a beast with handling overclocking, or its not actually overclocking. i might also mention that i didnt see any difference in how hot the cpu ran at 3.0GHz and at 3.6GHz.

so i dont know. it seems fishy and too good to be true, so im a bit skeptical.

on second thought, ill just run a windows utility in wine

yes i know its extraordinarily hackish, but if it works, i dont care lol.

ugh... so reading /proc/cpuinfo says the CPU is running at 2400.001 MHz, which means it isnt overclocked (its not a default value set to be displayed by intel, otherwise it wouldnt have the .001 on it). so for some reason, setting the FSB in the BIOS has no effect.

help!

Turn off speedstep, it automatically downclocks the CPU. Should be an option in your BIOS I think? I haven't used intel in awhile, so it's a little hazy.

im pretty sure its off, and im also pretty sure that it wouldnt just reset to the stock speed.

also, im not sure if this is related, but the computer refuses to POST unless its booted with the reset button. using the power button from when its off wont work, and neither will restarting it from the operating system. so to boot it, i have to press the power button and then the reset button. it gives a warning about the last POST attempt failing, and gives the option to either go into setup and fix stuff or ignore teh warning and continue booting. continuing with the boot works fine, but it gives no indication that it sets itself automatically back to default settings (which it might do anyways, but it shouldnt from what i see). this happens on 1333MHz FSB, which the board is rated for and the cpu should easily be able to handle.

basically, im totally lost with this.

so nobody here has ever had/heard of this problem?

suppose i could try overclockers.net...

1.825v would be frying that chip, stock voltage on these puppies is like 1.275v to 1.35v.

i'd goto http://www.xtremesystems.org & http://www.anandtech.com or the tomshardware forums and post in the forum for the chipset maker you are using.

have you tried a more mild OC and seen if that sticks?

ok it might be 1.2875V or something like that, i dont remember exactly. i dont have physical access to the machine from home and my monitoring programs dont give those voltage readings, so ill have to check on tuesday.

and ive tried both 3GHz and 3.6GHz and neither one of them stuck. the system should easily handle 3GHz since the board is rated for the 1333MHz FSB and C2s nowadays are designed for 1333FSB (so the 1066 procs should be able to handle it).

ill try anandtech and overclockers and see what i can get. thanks!

actually no, ill check and see if there are any issues with the bios though.

your oc'ing the school computer?

its a prototype and its designed to be used for high-performance computing (hence why we're using CUDA on an 8800GTX), so we want it to be as fast as it can be. and ive been given the "go ahead" to overclock
