Picture Thread

Historical capture recovered from the Wayback Machine · captured 2008-01-23 · 50 posts
Ok, it's been pretty heavy around here lately and Pic threads are always popular.

I know some of you have bought new cameras and this is a great place to post your handy work!

I'll keep the theme from the Edmund Fitzgerald thread rollin', here are pictures from the Great Lake Superior

(plus others)

I took this today around 10am, it's around -12F but the windchill was waaayyyy lower. The diffence in temps makes the lake steam. Early in the day it's much more beautiful, I'll try and get some of the massive columns on film and post it here. It's truly amazing.

This is a repost of a pic I took last winter on Superior

Our little lighthouse everyone is so proud of, it's the oldest continuely operated lighthouse in the U.S.

And a sunset from North Dakota this last Thanksgiving

And a sunrise just before we went out for our morning hunt

Great pics, but FYI the stupid ads block the first photo out, you should probably minimize it to half its size with HTML tags.
what camera do you use.

also, i want to be you.

great pics, mang, kudos.

Thanks Cobalt, but I'm not smart enough to know how to do that. lol I'll mess around and see if I can minimize it.

Aria: I use a Canon Rebel XT and for most of these shots,I used the lense that came with the camera, although, I have a larger telephoto lense too. They both are nice to use and produce great pix. I swear, its all camera, it's so easy to use. I did take photography in High School many moons ago, but it's really just a sweet camera.
Awesome pics Major

Shrink the first down by uploading it to imageshack.us You can select a smaller size for it. It'll give you a direct link to image then that you can use, or you can post the thumbnail and have people click to see the full image.

Wow those pictures are national geographic type quality. Amazing.
Wow major those pics are amazing! Me likey.

I need to buy a new camera desperately. Ever since my Honeymoon this past year mine hasn't worked correctly, plus it's just time for an upgrade.

Anyone have any suggestions for a descent digital camera in the $300 and under dollar range?

Open in your image editor, make the longest border 900 pixels long. At 72dpi a jpeg will be a good size for uploading and posting full size views.

The Pentax K100D was just named the best buy digital slr camera for under $1000. If you shop around you should be able to get it with a kit lens for around $500. Excellent technology for the price!

Hm, nice looking camera indeed. A tad more than I wanted to spend, but I would consider it, thanks.

Where are you taking those Superior pics from? Awesome pics...I love that lake, so nice driving up the north shore in MN once you get past the pure depression that is Duluth.
Two Harbors MN and thanks guys.

Cobalt: Thanks

Doesn't matter if you spend $10,000 on a camera if you don't know how to compose and expose you're still gonna take a crappy photo.

Ernst Haas says "The camera doesn't make a bit of difference. All of them can record what you are seeing. But, you have to SEE IT!"
Those are nice.

It's pretty hard NOT to get good pictures in northern Minnesota Always beautiful up there. I live down in Brooklyn Center, MN, where the sky has become even more grey everyday.

Major, having sized my own photos for the forum and noticed you are also an SLR user - know that your pictures probably look even better on your own screen. Linking them online compresses them - in reality, they are quite sharp, but photobucket messes with that a bit.

I shoot mostly sports for my school and sites called PrepSportsOnline.com and mnsportspreview.com

And some slightly purdier ones..

I was actually taking photos for the other team

They (Centennial and Anoka) are actually playing again tonight. Might shoot for fun.
I went out again today to try and get some of the massive columns of steam coming from off the lakes surface but I think the water has cooled sufficently where it's not going to happen like I've seen before. However, you can still see the effect in the photos I took. The temp was well below zero again and the windchill actually makes it painful on the hands and face.

Some cool ice formations

this ice was really neat, I hope you get the idea, it's kind of "bulb" like in it's formation.

These look like teeth on a monster

FMD can't you guys make a damn picture that doesn't fuck up the page?

Buy a bigger monitor......J/K I resized them just for you. If you complain their upside down too, it's because you are in Australia mate.
Just don't make 'em sideways. Does my head in

I know puddin, zom and others have some great stuff to post, any others?
real nice pics major

this is 1 i took in St. Maarten over christmas
hard as hell to hold the cam still with 10x optical zoom

Thanks swoop, pretty cool pic yourself. I'd love to buy a stabilizing zoom lense, I just don't feel like paying insane money for it.

I wasnt aware that you had such a need for being posted on.

BTW Maj, very nice pics. I have pics from another place, but the GF isnt the place to post them... well in the context of not wanting to make this thread political. It's much better to respect the thread on its original merits.

Thank you and your uncle is very talented, thanks for the link. It was a nice way to end whats been a shitty day.

SS, I'd love to see them, make another thread and don't make it political. Let the photos speak for themselves.
Nice pics Major. Man is the north shore awesome. You've gotta repeat this in the summer and fall so people don't think you live in Greenland though!

You're making me want to take a digital photography class this summer.

Anyways, here's a couple from my vacation in Belize...

and...

I took those with a Panasonic Lumix TZ-3. I'm thinking about looking into an SLR this summer perhaps. I don't think I could have gotten the pictures you did with my camera.
