Error sparks mad dash over 33-cent gas

Wisconsin store manager calls customers who paid low price ‘dishonest’

updated 8:22 p.m. ET, Fri., Dec. 7, 2007
MINOCQUA, Wis. - Dozens of drivers made a mad rush for cheap gas after a station employee accidentally changed the price to 33 cents a gallon. An employee closing Trig's Minocqua Shell for the night meant to drop the price of gas by 1 cent.

But he mistakenly dropped a nine from the $3.299 a gallon in the computer, making the price of gas .329 cents Monday night.

He left about 10 p.m., but drivers could still use their credit cards to buy gas.

Those that did got a bargain, and word spread fast.

Forty-two people bought 586 gallons of gas in an hour and 45 minutes.

Local police saw the hoard at the station and called store manager Andrea Reuland.

She went to the station and pushed the emergency stop.

"There were cars two deep at each of my pumps," said Reuland, who knew many of the drivers.

One person had pumped 27 gallons and two purchased 18 gallons.

Manager upset at 'dishonest' people
Reuland told people they were being dishonest — the main store sign had the correct price.

"I was very upset that there's that many dishonest people," she said. "They knew there was a problem, and they took advantage of an employee's mistake and I think that's terrible."

For that many people to be at a rural, northern Wisconsin gas station after 10 p.m. is highly unusual, she said.

The employee, who has been there for about six months, had changed the gas prices 25 times in the past six months.

"It was an honest mistake," Reuland said. "I could have done it."

Area residents were still talking about it Friday morning.

"Was it you guys?" a woman in the station asked Reuland. "Why do I always miss the good stuff?"

With oil companies posting record profits, I sure would feel bad getting 1 lonely tank of cheap gas.

Clearly, this was a win for the terrorists.

Are the corner gas stations also posting record profits?

Dont feel any sympathy for gas station owners. My friends dad owns one citgo in the subarbs, and he lives in a million dollar house. Im sure he lost a bunch of money by the mistake, but they make a steal on all of the candy/soda they sell.

edit: forgot to say i live in wisconsin

In MN and WI gas stations are legally required to sell gas within a few percentage points of what they bought the gasoline for from their supplier. It's not the gas station owners you should be railing against, it's the MUCH bigger fish up the chain.

I do feel sorry for the owner of this gas station, that was a very expensive mistake.

QFT though it does suck for the gas station since they prepay for the gas, so the oil company already made their money and it's the gas station that does lose a lot of money from this.

I'm really not sure why people want to blame the Oil Companies for 'getting theirs'.

It's our fault, really. Government has subsidized the Oil industry for as long as I can remember, voters vote in (for President and Vice President) individuals with strong ties to the Oil industry, and everyone wonders why Libertarians continually press for much less government.

Very limited federal government == less cronyism.

Let's do the math
586 gallons sold overnite.
Original price $3.309 - 586 gals before 1 cent change, $1939.074
Correct price 586 gallons $3.299, $1933.214
Difference in price of new/old @ 586 gallons $5.86
Incorrect price 586 gallons $.329, $192.794
Difference between correct price/mistake $1740.42

What was the reason they were dropping the price by a penny??
I think we need to know how many gallons they normally sell in a day to figure out if they're really harmed by the error.

newsflash: the government makes more of a profit off of gas than oil companies do. and the government doesnt even produce the gasoline.
