I swear, there is no escaping the police state...

I must agree that this guy used his taser entirely too quickly. Although the person was getting argumentative with him, they weren't to the point of needing it as of yet. However, given the fact that the guy was saying something about not liking the way he was being talked to, I could see where this one was going.

The officer will likely say that he gave 2-3 orders for the guy to give him proof of insurance/license and the guy refused/obstructed his attempts to give information and that the guy started getting a little pushy. I don't blame the officer...I blame our society. Officers these days are so worried about getting caught beating the crap out of somebody who probably deserves it...that they are completely forgoing the whole "putting their hands on people" to control them (fearing potential lawsuits)....and going straight for the taser. They give an order/command--it's not obeyed, so they taser the person and cuff them up. No fighting, no melees, no brawls...simple, yet effective.

However...as much of a fan as I am of a taser, like any other weapon in our government's hand, somebody has to be accountable for individual officer actions as well as policies. As borderline as this incident is...a third-grader could easily articulate the justification for the usage of this particular tasering. Do I totally agree with it? Not this time.

The alternative to using a taser, just like LS said, is going hands on with a non-complaint individual.

Take into account that the location of this particular incident: along side a busy highway. Safety was definately in jeapordy.

I do believe he escalated his use of force rather quick, but I don't know his departments policies.

It was Turkey day... I don't know the motor vehicle laws in Texas..... but I guess having no liscense plate in the back is an offense you can stop someone for...

Because stopping someone for doing 5 miles over the speed limit isn't even any points... Heck, in TEXAS? You're LUCKY someone is only 5 miles over the speed limit...

So leaves 2 things for the officer... no plates on the back of the car, and the driver is black.

Dude was profiling. Black driver, plate missing... must be :
a) stolen
b) suspended liscense

right? Profiling?

Wow...just wow. You think the US is a police state? I have been to police states. When I was 13 or so, my dad was stationed in Germany. Our scout troop took a field trip to Berlin. At that time, Berlin was a partially free city in East Germany which was a police state. You obviously have no idea what a real police state is.

We are not a full blown police state but we are well on our way.

You need to get out more.
What a f*cking prick......

5 mph over the speed limit (in a 65 zone) and no plates (on what appears to be a brand new car).

Wow...Cops like this are why all of them are starting to get a bad reputation. This ass packer needs to relearn what the hell his priorities on the job are.

I'm very sorry that Cpl. Fatty was grumpy because he didn't get to eat Turkey with his family that Thanksgiving.

This is getting ridiculous already with the freaking tasering of unarmed people.

Yeah, this cop....and the last dozen who have done this have "I'm thinking about your public safety" written all over them.

Frankly, I think this cop deserves some sort of citizenship award…..hell, maybe we can just skip to a medal of bravery ceremony and have a small parade (w/ just a few thousand balloons).

I love it how a cop was the sole architect behind creating a dangerous situation (like pulling someone over on a busy interstate for an absolute b*llshit reason) and is then congratulated for defusing that situation smoothly (that he ultimately created).

Man do they have a sweet ass job. I’ve never been more proud to say that my taxes fund his salary.

I agree...but with a little hope (and perhaps a wink) it looks like we might be in for the treat of getting to watch one develop first hand.
That was what? like 45 seconds from the time he came to the door till he tasered the guy. Not much time to actually bring your license out and give it to the cop=/

Really? Then how come we no longer have this but we now have this bullshit

And just what the fuck was this all about?

Oh, more fun!

And who could forget this?

And of course the outright declaration of Martial Law

An article about PDD 51

Maybe you should open your eyes.
Cpl. Thomas O'Connor's immediate supervisor and internal affairs investigators exonerated him of wrongfully using the weapon, saying he was justified because he "perceived a threat," dozens of pages of internal memos and other records said. In May, Cathy Ellison, acting police chief at the time, suspended O'Connor for three days in May for using force against Eugene Snelling and for violating a department policy requiring officers to "respect the rights of individuals and perform their services with honestly, sincerity, courage and sound judgement."

The dramatic traffic stop has now become a "black eye on the organization," according to new Chief Art Acevedo, who this week will begin using the video as a training tool to prevent future incidents.

"It was very upsetting to me," Acevedo said in an interview last week. "What I saw wasn't consistent with my expectations of the men and women of the Austin Police Department. Our job is to de-escalate stops, not escalate them. The way the officer conducted business, he absolutely escalated the situation."

30 seconds - The cop was opening the door ordering him out of the car

46 seconds - The cop was tasering the driver

All because the driver was upset that the cop was being a dick... which he clearly was.

This happened way to fast.

OTOH, no license plate is a red flag to cops. I had a new car and it took a couple weeks for the plate to show up. The temp plate was in the rear window. But the rear window was tinted and you couldn't see the temp plate until you were right up on me. I had a cop tailing me for at least a 1/2 mile up to 3 times everyday until I got my real plate.

You sure it wasn't Homeland Security???

I've had this happen before too.... When I was pulled over (after buying a new car) I told them that my name was "Juan Chavez Rodrigez" and that I didn't have any ID, legal driver’s license, or proof of auto insurance.

Being in California, the officer immediately apologized and let me ago without any further questioning.

It was a pretty close call.

You have shown me the light!

You better run back into your room and hide, the police are coming to get us!

We are prisoners in our own homes. I'm scared of the police now.

And to think I was foolish enough to go outside. I'm lucky to still be alive and out of prison!

Gratz on tossing out buzz words without a clue as to what they mean. The US is still the country with the MOST personal freedoms in the world. I honestly think you should do some research on "police states" before you call the US one, or say that it is well on its way to being one.

Hands on would seem pretty dangerous - the officer would be at greater risk for being overpowered and/or having their sidearm taken from them and used against them.

Still, tasers can be used excessively, and adequate training and oversight must be maintained.

Ok, this shit is getting rediculous.

They took the video away....

Cliff notes pwaweess....
in other news...........

Tasers a form of torture says UN

TASER electronic stun guns are a form of torture that can kill, a UN committee has declared after several recent deaths in North America.

"The use of these weapons causes acute pain, constituting a form of torture,'' the UN's Committee against Torture said.

"In certain cases, they can even cause death, as has been shown by reliable studies and recent real-life events,'' the committee of 10 experts said.

Three men, all in their early 20s, were reported to have died in the United States this week, days after a Polish man died at Vancouver airport after being Tasered by Canadian police.

Those bastards.

Ok. A woman was handcuffed in a police station. A cop wants her to go into some room and he grabs her to put her in there. She apparently is not comfortable with how he is touching her because she says something about "you're a man! don't touch me!" or some such shit. So, like any upstanding person, he tazes her WHILE SHE IS HANDCUFFED.

WTF!!
