Dell Poweredge 2550 server. 3 drive scsi raid 5, I believe. 1 HD fails. Ok, buy a new one, go to take it out, well, whoever put them in, put in the locks, so I pulled it out of the rack, opened it up and took out the locks, then took out the hard drive and put in the new one. When I did that, I pulled out the power, plugged back in. Ok, the drive seemed to be rebuilding, but the light on the server was blinking orangish or amber. I assumed it would end when the drive was done rebuilding as it started when the drive failed. This was Wednesday, last week, and we were off until today. Come in and the light still blinking. Reboot, still blinking, come to take another look in the back, I'm retarded and didn't plug in the 2nd power supply, cords in the way, didn't see it, dark, whatever, I didn't, I'm retarded, whatever. Plug it in and even reboot later, still blinking orange. both PS's are blowing air, so they seem to be working fine. The drive specific liht indicates it's working fine, on reboot the bios gives no error messages. Event viewer gives nothing of note. Dset 1.4 gives nothing of note. But all I google seems to indicate a failed drive or 2nd PS not plugged in.

Any suggestions? I'm not sure if I still have to do something for the HD to take properly as my knowledge is very limited with scsi shiznit.

I wish you foreigners would speak English! WTF did you just say?

I'm a noob, and can't help!
The drive may have been Dead On Arrival.

Did your company purchase Dell's 24/7 Next Day server warrenty like a good boy?

Sure, but that expired years ago.

The lights on the drive are showing up as if it's working great and on boot up the bios finds it and starts the array np.
Might seem stupid, but I didn't see it in your first post, have you taken the new drive back out, and plugged it back in yet?

Just to clarify, did you make sure you bought a compatible drive?

In a RAID 5 such as that, the drive should automatically begin to rebuild once you plug in the new one. Of course, I've mostly worked with HP and IBM hardware, so I'm not sure off the top of my head if Dell's servers operate differently.

I took it out and plugged the drive back in, it's doing something. No more Amber blinking light, but the drive has an amber light on it, but it appears to be reloading the array or something, it's working.

Yeh, I went through dell, gave them code and everything to get new drive. It should be AOK.
Do you have the Dell OpenManage software installed on there? If not you need to get it right away.

1st off: Its free

and

2nd: It will tell you exactly why that light is blinking.

Dell OpenManage 4.5 Managed Node w/ PE2550 support

Oh and make sure that you install the Array Manager as well during setup so you can manage your RAID-5.

I pray you had backups.

Of course, though with a Raid array, you really shouldn't need them, except for when you have more than 1 failure or the array itself fails or some shit.
