Amen. I can't stand the fact that my state gets 55 cents in federal funding back for every dollar we send to Washington. Goddamn welfare states advocating wealth redistribution. If they can't be self reliant on their own, perhaps we should redefine borders.

I always appreciated Howard's stance against Islam-o-fascism. Speaking as someone who looked across the world stage for leadership in this area- Howard stood in elite company on this issue.

The government doesn't exist to "educate"---it exists to ensure that standards are met through the educational process. Your "sensible" *new* ideals (neo-socialists and neo-communists) and the people who "thunk them" often ended up in gulags, in front of firing squads, or enslaved, giving all they had to an out-of-control government...all throughout asia and eastern Europe. Government doesn't exist to provide for people...care for people (except those people who cannot care for themselves (orphans, mentally ill, physically handicapped). Everyone else is 100% responsible for their own lives, their own health, their own education...in short...their own EVERYTHING.

Simply taking from those who have things/money and forcibly redistributing them to those who do not...or who refuse to go and work is pretty similar to a street thug mugging you at gunpoint...there's nothing moral about it.

Making all people responsible for some of the people is an infrigement on freedom. A socialist country whether communist or democratic will always be less free. Taxes are a major indicator of freedom in my opinion. Socialism as it is defined today is an ideology that is outdated and should have been left in the 20th and 19th centuries.

Conservatives strongly believe in self help, so obviously education is high on the list.

What's the best way to get health care? Pay for it.

What's the best way to get money to pay for health care? Earn it.

With regards to what the Government is responsible for... AFAIC it's responsible to ensure that a country can grow and evolve and it can't do that if it doesn't assume a certain amount of responsibility with regards to it's populations health, safety and education. You can't expect your population to be involved in invention and research into sciences if they can't read or write. The better the education at an early age the more opportunities can be afforded and the more benefits to the country as a whole. It's not rocket science really! The same can be said for housing, public transport, health just about everything.

I am responsible for my own life, health and education but that doesn't mean I don't have a certain amount of responsibility to my community and the country as a whole and nor should it. I'm not a country of 1 and I don't wanna be!

governments can put standards on learning, kris. they dont have to and should not provide the learning itself though. it is not anyones responsibility to pay for the education or health care or ANYTHING of someone else. if people choose to do so, that is fine; charity is good. but government forcing the responsibility on people is an infringement of human rights. you know that whole right to life liberty and property (or pursuit of happiness, as jefferson wrote in the declaration; most of the sources he used said property though)? forcing people to pay for others is depriving them of their right to their own property, plain and simple.

Then how about people being given the Freedom to particpate in the programs they think are just or may want to benefit from.

Ever wonder why the US can boast of having over 90% of the world's top 200 universities despite making up only 5.5% of the world population? Private dollars.

Last thing I'd ever want to happen in this country is for teh government to pay $150,000 per student to go to a good university and then secondary school after that. Maybe the government can do something and help lower the interest rate on student loans. But G-d forbid the US should enforce costs on its universities, then we would have just average universities like Europe does with the exception of Oxford, Cambridge, and a handful of others.

Ever wonder why the whole world lists studying in the US as their first choice?
