WASHINGTON - President Bush demanded Saturday that Congress send him legislation that keeps middle-class Americans from being hit at tax time next year by the dreaded alternative minimum tax.

That's not likely to happen anytime soon. Congress has adjourned for the Thanksgiving holiday. The legislation is muddled in the House and Senate. And Bush has threatened to veto any bill that raises taxes as a way of fixing the tax, known in shorthand as AMT."

reallocate funding > raise taxes

we dont need more taxes, just people that are willing to not be bought out by special interests that will be responsible with the money they DO get.

Yes. But since you feel taxes should be raised, may I suggest instead that you simply write a check made payable to the US Treasury. They WILL accept it. Put YOUR money where your mouth is, not mine.

you think reallocating our money will really help? when we have a barely sufficient education system as it is, as well as health care system?

I already have debts, I didn't agree to pay off those debts too.

So when the taxes are raised to pay off the debt, are you not going to pay your taxes?

Well it sounds like your suggesting a socialist government then...cause they tax like 45%.

Beleive me, there's enough bureaucratic bloat that could be slimmed over time to cover the war debt.

As far as the other topics go, there are other solutions than raising taxes. Don't jump on board with your favorite politicians without thinking for yourself first. Mental independance is job 1.

Why do Dems/Libs just LOVE to jack the hell out of taxes every chance they get?
I am totally disappointed with this thread.

I thought George Dubya got laid by an intern or something... Y'know... like a Monica Lewinsky or something.

Pfft!
It's not even that entertaining.

Probably the same reason Reps/Libs love to spend money we don't have.
for those of you who went straight to your "Talking Points" instead of reading the article maybe this will help: the ATM (alternative tax minimum ) was put in place a long time ago to make sure wealthy people pay at least SOME taxes given the outrageous tax shelters afforded them. it has never been adjusted for inflation during all that time so now middle income people are getting blind sided by this tax. fixing this is rather important i think.

Neither of which the SCOTUS authorizes the fed to muck with.

Be sure to post photos of the cancelled check, front and back, for all to see. You know, that whole "pics or it didn't happen" bit.

Because Reps/Cons get stuck with the bill. Remember, only the top 50% of wage earners have a fed tax obligation. The rest pay nothing, and many of them actually get money for nothing via refundable tax credits.

QFT

The company I work for frequently has trouble selling our software to other IT organizations because it solves a problem that isn't explicitly recognized by our customers as being a problem until we point it out to them. As such, there is never any money budgeted for it.

So how do we convince companies to spend $650K on our product? When we prove to them that we can save them the equivalent of 3 or more full-time equivalents (FTE = salary + benefits + money spent on things like computers, electricity, etc.) every year for every 10 employees they have then they are willing to reallocate money already budgeted for filling new headcount or replacing those lost to attrition.

Cliff Notes: if money's already been allocated it's a helluva lot easier to redirect it than it is to try and get additional money.

no opposes repeal of the AMT. All Democrats and republicans will vote for its repeal. If you were paying attention to Rangel's bill you would know that.
If we're going to start re-allocating money instead of raising taxes, can we touch defense spending because its the biggest fund? Oh wait, we don't want to send the wrong message that we don't support our troops

Does expanding the tax base mean nothing to you?

Taxes are just one leg in the 3 legged stool.

Tax rates...Profit margin
Tax base....Sales
Budget......Expenses

Lower profit margins = increased sales

Remember in school the math riddle about selling goods for maximum income? Calculate the perfect balance in price to generate the most income in sales overall.

Raising taxes isn't always the best way to increase tax income.

THINK!

I knew you were a closet neocon.

=======

I cant recall where I saw it, but the American economy is based upon 70% or so of consumer spending. People keeping more of their check is a good thing. Back in may, the gvt collected like $49 Billion in one day from taxes, a record.

Now if only we could get spending under control. Seems the average American has to live within in their means but the gvt doesnt. I wonder what the looks on their faces would be if the American people showed up on the steps of the Capitol and arrested them for bad checks?

PATRIOTIC DISSENT IS A LUXURY OF THOSE PROTECTED BY BETTER MEN THAN THEY.
What's new about Bush threatening to veto something? It doesn't matter if a bill has complete support in committee, if it has majority Republican support, or overwhelming bipartisan support he has proven he's bent on vetoing it.

Bush has devoted the remained of his time ensuring that the thinly-controlled Democratic Congress gets nothing done. Its a shame Congress' numbers are so low because they are working, they are getting things done, but Bush refuses to let anything pass. Bush is the sole reason nothing is being done.

One word. Fillibuster. Which party is infamous for pulling that move?

Which party shot down lawsuit reform?

Which party shot down social security reform?

Let's be realistic here.

Just heard this on NPR as I was driving today: Travelling Economists

Was an interesting piece they did and the clips from the presentations was equally fascinating. I like how they formed the presenters from both sides of the economic spectrum.

Amen.

Buzzed, are you angry I criticize a man you voted for?

Let's see a little Bush handy work as of late:
-Health and Education Appropriations Bill - Passed in both houses by large, bipartisan majorities. 75 to 19 including a majority of Republicans in Senate. Vetoed by Bush.
-Stem Cell Research - Supported by 70% of Americans, passes 63 to 37 in Senate, vetoed by Bush. Brought back with the new Congress and it enjoyed more support than before, once again was vetoed.
-Children's Health Insurance Bill - Bipartisan support, and very much needed. Vetoed.
-Farm Bill - Passed in the Ag Committee without a single dissenting vote. Bush took issue with nearly every aspect of this bill, including an expansion of a program for fresh fruits and vegetables for school kids. Yes, he objected to expanding a program that serves fruits and vegetables in schools in the fattest nation on Earth. Its mind boggling, and Bush intends to veto it.

That list is in no way complete.

And btw Buzzed, were those issues of the 110th Congress of which I speak? You know I've come to expect such missteps from you when it comes to government and the workings of our country ever since you told us all this gem:

"The military cannot attack a country without first declaring war on it."
i am actually firmly opposed to the AMT.

it is a clusterfuck of a concept, it needs to be killed.

Enough money is already pouring in to the fed. They just need to go back to school and learn how to balance a check book.
