Sorry...but Law Enforcement is lazy

So, I've not had to deal with law enforcement in my area in years, but I can honestly say that I hope the current sheriff enjoys the time he has left, because his days are numbered.

Last Thursday my wife went into the daycare where are kids are to pick them up. Keep in mind this is 5:15PM during peak pick up. The parking lot is jammed full. Someone smashes the passenger side window out of our Pacifica and steals her purse.

Now, the real pisser is they got her $2500 hearing aid and her Brighton Wallet. Credit cards I canceled 15 minutes later (except for one I forgot she had) and the next morning we put a stop payment on all the checks she had in her checkbook. Cop shows up. Does a report. Blah blah...no fingerprint dusting (which I didn't expect anyway), got assurances he's look around, but its a smash and run. The following Monday we get a letter closing the case due to no leads. Wow, they must have done a lot of work over the weekend. Because I spoke to about 5 people who mentioned several other people in the area having windows broken and items stolen...surely, it can't be a trend.

Last night we get home and check the mail. Low and behold we have a notice from our bank stating that two checks each written for $2150 where cashed at a bank 3 counties away. Of course they had stop payments put on them. We call the Sheriff's office with the new lead information. Credit card charge and the check stuff. We have copies of the checks. Banks have their transactions time stamped and there is camera's everywhere. Bingo, someone should be going to jail. Ironically you can look at the signature on the check and see that it was written by the same person the check was made out to and the handwriting is female in appearance.

Well Sherriff department tells us hey are sorry, we'll have to contact the Washington County Sherriff's dept. Just give them the case number. I'm thinking..what the fuck do you guys get paid for? Cruising the neighborhood and eating donuts? Is someone going to do some real police work, or do I have to do it myself? I mean hell, we asked around the area if anyone saw something. Spoke to people at businesses and stores in the area (which is how we found out about the other burglaries).

So, basically we are without a car for a week and we have to do our own police investigation. I hope these folks know they are going to jail, because right now I'm pissed off and they wont' be poor meing their way out of it. If its kids, no amount of money their parents have will stop me from sending their asses to jail.

Generally the police are useless when it comes to investigating anything.
You should have told them a dozen donuts were also stolen, you would have got some action then TC.
Sry Bout yer Luck BTW.

Petty crime is low priority for the police. Depending on the size of your area in terms of population, because these crimes are mountains of paperwork and their just isnt enough people to handle them they typically close them out. This happened to me a few years ago when my wallet was stolen and same sort of thing happened. Sucks.

Tie it to a string and pull it away from them
When my house was broken into, it was part of a rash of breakins in the area. Very unusual because I live in a rural area.

They broke into one other house in my subdivision, and about 15 total in the area. They got some fingerprints off my sliding deck door (off of glass no less so I thought they'd be good prints), and took plaster casts of a shoeprint in the snow, and tire tracks in my driveway.

Couple weeks later, I hadn't heard anything so I called the deputy in charge of the investigation. Was basically told they didn't find anything from the fingerprints or casts, but thought they knew who was behind it but couldn't execute a search warrant on their home because they didn't have enough evidence.

I tried to find out who they thought was behind it, but never could get the name out of them. I kind of chalked it up to "life sucks" - at least they didn't take much, and didn't vandalize the house.

I only wish I had been there when they tried to break in. If I had gotten the drop on them, I wouldn't have had any hesitation taking them out.

I'd be willing to bet police investigators fall into two camps. The ruthless bulldogs who will stop at nothing to solve a case, and the worthless donut eating bastard who should be fired. I bet there's not much middle ground.

You should run for sheriff as a green party candidate, and pledge to use only recycled bullets.

cash checking and petty theft means nothing anymore. Even if they catch them, they will be in and out of jail in no time. So why should they bother? Do yourself a favor and go to the local sheriff's arrest inqueries and do a name search of the last 20 people they incarcerated. I'll bet 18 of them have been arrested multiple times just in the past year. That's the problem. The cops get burnt out seeing all their efforts going nowhere. After all, we got to keep those potheads and drug addicts locked up.
I think it's a safe bet that TC will find these people... Prosecute them to the full extent of the law... then hit them as hard as he can with his ban stick..

TC

I had a similar situation but it was my wife and she works in an office building and has a "secure" parking lot across the street. The office she works in overlooks the parking lot. One day she took "my baby" to work, a patient came into the office and said someone is trying to break into a car in the lot. My wife looks to and to her horror, it's our car. She calls 911, they cops show up 50 minutes later. The theifs breaking into my car weren't the brightest bunch, two whites kids and one black. They couldn't get into the car, they were there for 15 minutes trying to get in through the door (tried pulling the lock out, both sides) and then through the trunk(same method). The did get the trunk open but they couldn't smash the cross member support out to get into the interior of the car. So they stole the Amp and Speakers out of the trunk. Then they finally decided to smash the windows and get the head unit and EQ. All this took approximately 15 minutes; she watched the entire thing go down.

The cops finally show up and could basically care less, now tell me, in the fifteen minutes it took those dumbasses to get inside the car, you think they left any finger prints? They kept hitting the same area for months afterwards and they finally got caught by a K9 unit(3 months later). At least one of the SOB's got bit by the dog.

I then get a call from a different police department telling me they have some of my stereo equipment and to come and pick it up (I use "Operation ID"). When I get down there, this cop has a huge pile of equipment for me to sign for. I told him not all of it was mine, he looked at me and said "I'm pretty sure it's all yours". I said "no, it's not, just the EQ and Head unit are mine". He looked at me all dismayed. LOL, he was trying to get rid of it because they have so little room in the "evidence locker" that they had to rent semi tractor trailers to house all of it.

Now I understand completely that larger departments get overwhelmed but they shouldn't lose focus of what their job is and who they "serve".

Its not "petty" crime. They did $1000 of damage to the vehicle. Stole a $2500 hearing aid and have written $4300 worth of bad checks and charged $25 on a credit card. It was petty crime to them on Thursday. However, its now $8800 bux and their is potentially another check out there as we understand it. What I find most disturbing is the fact that when you look at the check you can tell that it was written by the same person, endorsed by the same person and signed by the same person. The handwriting is THAT obvious.

I got one worse than that Major, I got robbed of a truck full of equipment. After a year they found all my stuff was pawned nearby. In florida, as long as a pawn shop makes the trader sign a piece of paper swearing its not stolen, then he is not responsible. So I had to pay $1800 bucks to the SOB to get my stuff back. It was worth about $2000 used/ $3000 new, so I said screw it. In Florida, fencing is legal business.

I think what is pathetic is that in our area we didn't have this problem because the cops actually did something instead of turn a blind eye. The bigger issue is that the cops who care get run out by the lazy fuckers because those guys make the lazy ones look bad.

I honestly wish these folks had tried to come to my house to see what they could get. Because I would have defended it to the max and the bonus is, they don't' have to be dragged back inside now.

It does depend on the department and the size of your community, the last two cities I've lived in aggressively prosecuted forgeries, fraud and people who bounce checks. In the last city, I filed a report for a bad check and two weeks later, the man was arrested. In the current city I live in, I had the local and county police collect my bad checks. It works wonderfully, nothing like having the police stop by and remind you that you bounced a check and need to make good on it. lol, I love it.

Its theft TC. Its not like they are robbing a bank or stealing 50 cars from a autolot. Thats all I meant. The stats show that in most cases these crimes go unsolved. So the police only have so many cases a detective can handle. And most Police units don't have the man power so the cases get closed out. I agree a better way to handle them needs to be done. Im just stating the realities of things currently. I hope they catch the SOB as well

Dude...I'd have bought it last week. However, I now have two checks with account number and one has a social on it. Last week...who knew. This week I know which way they where heading and what banks they where in. There is no way that someone at a bank doesn't have a picture of these people. Don't give me the time bullshit, this one now has a trail that can be followed if someone gets off their ass. Furthermore I don't live in a huge city with massive amounts of crimes daily...This is the shit that is wrong with the country and why crime is like it is.

I agree with you on that part. The case should have reopened. When my wallet was stolen they used my CC to book two flights to Asia. What the police should have done is met the idiots at the airport when they flew out

Check fraud is punishable by up to 30 years in prison and $1,000,000.00 fine... hardly would call that 'petty'.

Uhmm I'm going to have to side with snake. I used to work for 911(i don't anymore, i fucking hate that place) and the shit i heard, this is NOTHING compared to what others go through. If you think this is some big deal, How about assault? sexual assault? Domestics? Home invasion? Breaking and entering? shots fired? armed person? disorderly person(s)? Stabbing? Missing person?...etc...You see where I'm going with this? Do you see you have a low priority call? I bet you the 911 center coded it as a THFTJ which stands for "Theft that just occurred" It just sucks dude, If you really think about it, your wife shouldn't of left her purse in the vehicle with all that stuff in it anyways. You're lucky that money and things that can be replaced is all they got. God forbid it was a child.

You're right, but not entirely. TC said they got her $2500 hearing aid, a Brighton wallet, who knows how much cash, etc. After the items stolen reach $400 in value its no longer a petty crime, its grand theft. They also broke a window to get the purse.

Unfortunately, TC....vehicle break-ins rank pretty low on the list when it comes to actually catching people. Since the very nature of the crime is "smash and grab", there is usually very little physical evidence at the scene to begin with.

Unless there is a direct eyewitness/pissed off boyfriend or girlfriend or you catch somebody involved and as part of a plea deal, they admit to stuff/implicate others; your chances of catching this person is pretty low...unless they're dumb enough to commit a string of such break-ins and get caught.

What you said regarding other departments is true. If a department 3 counties away is involved as a party which is secondary to the primary offense, they aren't going to know about it. Hell...the original department where the event took place isn't going to know about it unless you tell them.

Basically, you're going to have to provide the primary agency (where the crime took place) with the information regarding the forgery and utterance of your check. The secondary agency (where the check was passed) will get involved and take the necessary steps to get tape/photos of the perpetrator of the crimes and provide them to their agency as well as the original jurisdiction. This is going to help their case significantly. A photograph is a good first step.

What I don't understand is why the bank (who should have already been notified by you) didn't immediately call the police when the check was being passed (especially since the checking account has been flagged). I'd be pissed at your bank. Many banks are actually requiring thumbprints to cash checks these days...it's a shame they didn't get one from this girl. I'm betting if they pull the original check, it might still have a latent print on it. People like this get nervous...sweat a lot when they commit such a crime. There's a good chance you can pull a good print off of the check, if too many people haven't handled it in the mean time.

Just remember...the police normally don't have any official lines of contact with banks or other financial institutions. They aren't going to know if somebody passed one of your stolen checks. Something like that is going to depend on you to make it known to the cops and let them handle it from there.
