Chatroom vultures egged him to pop more Rx pills

By HELEN KENNEDY
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

"I told u I was hardcore."

Those were the last coherent words Brandon Vedas, 21, typed into the computer in his Phoenix bedroom as he showed off for Internet pals watching on a Web cam by swallowing more and more prescription drugs.

Vedas died online as a crowd of virtual onlookers egged him to "eat more!" A chilling record of the Jan. 12 chat reads like an Internet version of the notorious 1964 Kew Gardens, Queens, stabbing of Kitty Genovese as her neighbors watched from their windows.

In Vedas' case, some did try to help — begging him to stop, to call 911, to get his mother from the next room. After he passed out, some tried frantically to figure out his location while others argued against getting involved.

But the technology that brought as many as a dozen chatters into the intimacy of Vedas' bedroom was unable to tell them where he was. Internet Relay Chat is anonymous, and no one in the drug users' chat group knew the last name of the young man who called himself Ripper.

Vedas was a casualty of a new epidemic: a surge in the recreational use of pharmaceuticals, even as the rate of illegal drug use holds steady or declines. The most recent survey by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration says 11.1 million people used prescription drugs for fun in 2000, nearly half of whom were under 25.

In New York City, the number of people showing up in emergency rooms after taking too many legal narcotics jumped 47.6% from 2000 to 2001, the most recent year for which numbers are available.

"In 2001, for the first time, we had more emergency room mentions of prescription narcotic analgesics nationally than for heroin," said Dr. Westley Clark, director of the administration's Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.

In Internet discussion groups, users trade tips on how to fake symptoms to con a doctor into prescribing pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants and sedatives.

By his own account, bragging in the hour before he died, Vedas ingested large doses of Klonopin, Methadone, Restoril and Inderal, along with marijuana and 151-proof rum. All but the pot and the rum apparently were legally prescribed for him by a doctor and a psychiatric nurse, according to his angry and mystified family.

"It's the ideal situation — it's legal and it's free," said Vedas' brother Rich. "And most people assume that if a doctor is giving you something, it must be fine."

Vedas, who worked in computer support at the University of Phoenix, knew a lot about the dangers of mixing drugs. But he also bragged delusionally about his "high tolerance." His mother knew he had been prescribed pills for depression — but no one in the family knew he was mixing his medicine for fun, his brother said.

On the night of Jan. 12, Vedas urged chat pals to log onto his Web site and watch him go through his stash. "Bottoms up, fellas!" he crowed.

"Don't OD on us, Ripper," said one of the onlookers watching Vedas swallow pill after pill.

"That's not much," said a teenager from rural Oklahoma who calls himself Smoke2K. "Eat more. I wanna see if you survive or if you just black out."

In the macho atmosphere of the druggie chat room, Vedas seemed to have something to prove. "This is usual weekend behavior. U all said I was lying," he said.

He said it was safe and noted, "My mom is in the next room doing crozzwordz."

As he took more and more, Vedas' typing became disjointed. His chat pals cheered him on.

"Ripper — you should try to pass out in front of the cam," suggested one gleeful voyeur.

Vedas even tried to protect himself against disaster.

"In fase anything goe wrong," he said, typing his cell phone number. "Call if I look dead."

Soon, he did.

Soon, he was.

"I am online with 911. Is this the right choice?" asked one chatter. "NO NO NO NO NO," said another. "I talked my way out of it," came the reply. "I didn't give them any info."

In the end, there was nothing they could do.

Vedas' cell phone was off or not loud enough to rouse anyone else in the house. They looked up his Web site registry, but he had listed his home number as 555-1234.

And the online chatters didn't know his real name or location.

His mother found him at 1 p.m. the next day sprawled on his bed. The tech whiz's computer had shut down and locked itself automatically, so it wasn't until more than a week later that the family found out his death had had witnesses.

"It seems like the group mentality really contributed to it," said his brother, calling the transcript "disgusting."

"These people treat it like somehow it's not the real world," he said. "They forget it's not just words on a screen."

Indeed.

you ppl are missing the fucking point.

They watched him die online, cheering him on to "eat more!". They couldn't even call a fucking ambulance. That's sick on so many levels.
Respice... it's no less than I'd expect from many. You've got his druggie buds who think doing crazy stupid harmful shit is cool. I'm not missing the 'fucking point'. There are parties where kids will die from alcohol poisoning. Their buds keep pressuring them into drinking more. After all, it's 'cool' to be able to handle your alcohol, right?

No, I'm not missing the 'fuckign point'. It happens al the time, however, and likely happens often ONLINE even. This is one story, a sad and sick one, but just one.
I recall a post here earlier on these forums that people thought was funny (it got deleted), about how someone played a prank that result in a car crashing into a house. The person inside could have obviously died were circumstances and terrain slightly different.

But they didn't die, so that makes it funny. Whereas when someone does, it's not.
No, it's still funny. Well, that's the wrong word. More like, disappointing. I think Neo put it best really. But you got to remember that humanity isn't all bad. For every idiot who ODs like this, there's probably at least two people who'll never touch drugs unless their doctor told them to, and even then they'll only follow the directions word for word. What does that do? Do two rights make up for a wrong? I don't know.
ya i saw this on TW. Its rfol when u see his pic, then immagine him saying: "I told u I was hardcore."
Your sig is lame too
To those who are saying that it's just natural selection and whatnot, I personally think it's more a blow against humanity. I think the "natural selection" excuse is just a cop out. It's much easier to say "this guy was amoron or had problems so there fore we hold no responsibility".

The truth is, this guy obviously did have problems that made him esp. susceptible to peer pressure. That doesn't mean that he should be a target to see how much damage he could do to himself. It would have been just as easy for those "friends" to tell him "you ought to knock it off" as it was to tell him "eat some more".

Just because someone is weaker does not mean we would be doing society a favor if we got them to kill themselves. I suspect it wouldn't be hard for any of us to befriend a retard and then goad them into doing illegal or dangerous stuff that could lead to their death. I would hope that all of us would think that doing it would not be a good thing.

First, I'd just like to say I wasn't singling anyone out.

Secondly, It doesn't make it any less sick if it happens a hundred times, a thousand times, or a million. Morally wrong is morally wrong no matter how many times it happens.
This is now the 2nd time I have heard of such a thing since I've been online. This is repulsive. Much of our society has been ripped of any sense of love or compassion. Sure, I'm not a poster child for compassion but I've never said i was perfect either. I foul up like anyone else but I have a conscience. This kid was obviously trying to prove something. Instead, someone (perhaps his parents) should have been proving to him how much they love him. This was someone's kid. Someone's son, brother.. a human life. One that should not have been tinkered with. And certainly not to be played as a puppet master.

I fear this will become more common and that we will eventually start seeing this crap on our tv's. When tv networks continue to bring their so-called "reality tv" to the livingrooms of youngsters across our country; feeding them visual lies filled with a severe lack of self-worth, immoralities and self-gratifications. It is disgusting.

They had his cell phone number. All they had to do is tell 911 what the number was and they can do the rest.

They did not have the area code for the cell number. By the time they would have traced it, or the IP, he would have been dead.

Faken

where did you hear that?
In several reports on CNN and Foxnews.... They had the cell number, but it was turned off, or not loud enough for anyone to hear in the house. So they did a whois on his website domain name, only to find a phone number with no area code.

Faken

They could have called the police to get in touch with the cell provider company and get the billing address for the cell, but again, byt the time they realized something we wrong, any kind of trace and actual arrival of paramedics would have been too late.

TO THE PPLE WHO LAUGHED AT THE KID: SCREW YOU!! HE OBVIOUSLY HAD LOW SELF ESTEEM AND LACKED COMMON SENSE. STILL, DO NOT MAKE FUN OF THE DECEASED. THEN YOU BECOME LIKE THE IDIOTS IN THE CHAT ROOM THAT ENCOURAGED HIM TO TAKE MORE PILLS.

TO THE PPLE WHO BLASTED AT THE CHAT ROOM IDIOTS: THEY HURT THAT POOR KID WITH THEIR ENCOURAGEMENT, I HOPE THEY CARRY THAT GUILT FOR YEARS.

It all depends on what the time of death was. His mother didn't find him until 1pm the next day. It doesn't say what time he and his chat room 'friends' were up doing this so it's not easy to tell how long it took for him to die. I don't know what you mean by realize something went wrong. They knew something was wrong right away.

I would say for police to determine the address of Vedas's residence given his cell phone number and for paramedics to respond would be around an hour...maybe two. That could've saved his life.

Regardless, it would've been the right thing to do.

I agree it would have been the right thing to do, but I can pretty much guarantee he was dead within an hour of him passing out and they realized that something was wrong. With the amount of shit he took, and what he combined it with, his body went into shock and basically shut off his organs. Even if they would have revived him minutes after he passed out, he probably would have been a vegetable.

Drugs are for people who know wtf they're doing. That kid fell into peer pressure and simply was trying to impress his internet friends. That's just terrible that he lost his life from all of this. Words are powerful things, especially online.

I hope those people live with the guilt for the rest of their lives.

Sorry, but the kid who overdosed was an idiot. I see this kind of crap alot where I work with people doing life threating things for the enjoyment of living on the edge. Peer pressure can contribute to people doing moronic things. However, ultimately the decesion was his to overdose.
