"The nation's largest beverage distributors have agreed to halt nearly all soda sales to public schools, according to a deal announced Wednesday by the William J. Clinton Foundation.

Under the agreement, the companies have agreed to sell only water, unsweetened juice and low-fat milks to elementary and middle schools, said Jay Carson, a spokesman for former President
Bill Clinton. Diet sodas would be sold only to high schools."

this is retarded, kids don't get fat from drinking to much soda. They get fat from scarfing down biggie sized fast food meals and not doing any exercise. I can't stand stupid shit like this. Parents need to drag their kid off their computers and video games and make them go play a sport.

Actually, there's enough sugar in pop that it's a substantial contributor to weight gain. Sugar is a basic form of carbohydrate (that is, a carbon-hydrogen compound.) When you consume more carbs (including sugar) than your body needs, the remainder gets converted to a much more efficient energy storage system: fat.
yea what he said. itll only have positive effects really..

I dunno... makes sense to me.

Kids have zero self control. They'd eat a box of Oreo's for lunch every day if they could. I know, I know... "bad parents"... but c'mon... kids are kids ;p

During my schooling, we had four choices: milk, chocolate milk, orange juice or water. I didn't have it home, either, so soda was a "special treat" kind of thing. Its horrifying to think kids drink that crap daily @ lunch.
just a spoonful of coke really burns my damn throat....in a most delightful way.

ROFL, "The nations largest beverage distributors have agreet to halt all soda sales to public schools"

Of course the soda will be replaced with other products these same companies make, and they will likely make a much higher profit becuase now they're just selling flavored water. Win/Win for the Pop (soda) companies.
...................................................

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

It does make sense

I have seen several shows/movies that show what most kids eat at school. I Think the movie Super Size Me had a segment on school lunches. Kids eating plates of French Fries, Downed with a Coke and for dessert 2 ice cream sandwiches. Its a small step of eliminating soda, but at least it is a step.

I cant stand Clinton, but this is a good idea.

That's exactly how it was for me. Milk, chocolate milk, OJ, water. Wasn't til High School that we had a soda machine in school.

^ What he said....

"You are not a hero to the world unless you are first and foremost a hero to your children." -Rabbi Shmuley Boteach
I've already attended 2 school board meetings this year where we lobbied to remove the Pepsi machines from the district's elementary schools, Grades K-5. High school I don't care about, but when my 6 year old kindergartener got off the bus w/ a can of Mountain Dew, I was pissed.

I agree with the stance that pop machines should be taken out of schools at least K-6. Besides the fact that the type of Carbs the sugar presents itself in pop, the sugar usually has the energetic affect in children. During these young years, development of raw skills is very important and to some kids being able to drink pop will shorten their attention span.

I myself have three "wide ass open" children in these grade levels. Soda is not readily available to them as a choice, and for that I am thankful. It is hard enough for them to control all their energy as it is, without the added factor of sugar rush from some pop. Yes they have the occasional party where soda is available, but that is on occasion.

In high school, children are of the age to start making appropriate decisions for themselves. If they are downing pop like it is water and they are stuck in the desert, then that is an issue that should be looked into. Dietary counseling and proper parenting should be implemented.
Dont forget the younger you are the worse caffeine is for u. At some coffee machines here (the free ones like at a supermarket) they clearly state not for kids under 12 or something o.O
The high school I went to abolished junk food on the property but the drug dealers started sellin chocolate bars and chips. They made a killing.

x2. I wish my school had soda when I was a kid. If it did, instead of 155lbs, I'd be pretty much close to 400lbs.
i'm all for this.

jamie oliver the naked chef has a program on TLC - over a series of episodes he is attempting to take over a british school lunch room and turn it into serving fresh nutritious meals. ive only seen one episode but it is very fascinating.

The right is more virtuous than the left. They have twice as many virtues because they have double the standards.

i honestly don't care about it being taken out of the k-5 schools. but i think its retarded to get rid of it in middle or high school for the main reason being dieting/fat kids. Fat can be genetic but it also is due to physical activity. Making their fat asses run a mile a day will do more then letting them not drink soda at school. I'd also believe that the fat asses are that way cause of what their parents feed them at home. School is just lunch, and sometimes breakfast. Thats only half of their intake.

Dude it's just sugar. It's not cocaine.

Drinking a can of coke isn't going to be any different than eating two apples.

That being said I still agree that parents should not be allowing their children to drink that shit. There is nothing healthy about it. The carbonation isn't healthy; the excessive sugar isn't healthy; the artificial colorings aren't healthy; and of course for our fat children we give them cancer-causing sweeteners so that's not healthy.

Actually it's a scientific fact that sugar does not elevate your energy.
Good thing I graduated a long time ago.

That Pepsi in 5th hour Spanish I always kept me awake.
