i think that it is rather interesting to learn about french revolutioanry figures whos ideas contrast with those of the fathers of the enlightenment and such.

Does anyone else have thoughts on this subject?

1. french fires aren't even french
2. this was over 200 years ago

Fnord.

they had Potatos back then..... and they had oil to fry them.
interesting read, thanks for it
I have been studying the French revolution, and such for the past three years. It actually is somewhat interesting; however, learning it in French and doing endless work on it just kind of drives me crazy. Ah, high school foreign language…

I bet a majority of you are basing your opinion on the Media, and the things you've read. You can't really have a true opinion unless you have been to France .

Next time you say anything about the US, I'll bring this quote up... thanks.

Oh, deary me. Funny thing is I've probably been to more states than most Americans, lol. My family owns property in Florida, been going to the US since I was 10 visited so many places, but to be honest you can't get worse than Florida in the summer, lol.

Getting on the true fact, every time I go the one thing that makes me laugh is your media be it the radio stations or the TV it just feels like your brainwashed by it. Why don't you rebel against your suppressors and write blogs, or make pod cast, instead of worshiping your demigod Orielly, roflcopter.

I've been to France, to be honest it isn't as bad as you put it out to be, just because a country embraces a different political system to yours doesn’t mean it is doomed to failure. The French showed they wanted change when they rioted, same as the Latinos and the human rights activists on Monday.

So, when I "bash" as you so call it America, I am only voicing my opinion on the minority of your nation the Neo Cons, who are rule your Capitalist Catastrophe, e.g CEO of Exxon and other major oil companies making a tidy buck from your miss fortune.

If the people want change they'll get it and that’s what the French did, and that’s what America did.

im curious, but what helps you form the opinion that were brainwashed by the demigod O' Reilly?

ahhhhhhh shit my bad.
i meant

80% of Americans dont have a passport

And since the EU was setup we dont need passports for traveling to EU member countries, but I passed through Switzerland and they checked ofc. However in general Europeans travel outside their continent a lot more than Americans outside their country. And Canadians have a much larger percentage of passport owners compared to the US, so I dunno if your point about travelling costs is that valid..

thats cool that you dont need passports

i know for the longest time that you used to be able to use your birth certificate to get in/out of mexico and canada

i think that after 9/11 that got changed though....not positive though...

as for Canada....first of all i would like to see a site proving that statistic.....

also...Canada has a very small population in comparison to the 270 million+ in America....so their percentage of passport holders per population will be higher anyways....

for example....

Canada's population is 33,098,932....so lets say that 10 million of them have passports... thats roughly 30% of the population....

America's population is 298,444, 215...so lets say 10 million of them have passports....thats 3.35%...

see what i mean?

well thats hardly true about canada. plus the US has much better access to lets say central/south america & the carribean.
here is what i found, many sources on the site but if you go down farther there is an official stat from the European Travel Commission.

Apparently the EU TC link has been changed, but I havent seen any figures drastically differing from that..so either way I find it surprisingly...wait no I dont find it surprising

The point about Americans not having passports and never being out of the country is sadly true.

I'd love to do more travelling, but it's so damned expensive for us to go anywhere besides Canada and Mexico.

For us to travel to Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, South America, etc, means significant $$$, which a lot of folks are unwilling or unable to spend.

People in Europe have a lot of other countries, history, culture, etc, right around them, so I would expect people in Europe to travel outside their country more.

As much as I'd like to go back to Europe some time, I just can't afford it right now. But when I can, I think I'm going for a couple months, not just a couple weeks.
again, i stress my point that Canada has a terribly small population in comparison to the US....so Canada's # of issued passports should, theoretically, be higher....

i was just saying that initially i didnt understand the point of discussing the lack of 100% passport holdings of american citizens....now i get its a tie in with MM saying that we form our opinions based off of media because we never go anywhere, which ties into the lack of passports....

get it?

i was simply saying that ill dispute with you, even though i didnt see a clear reason why we were discussing....

anything else?

do you disagree with the points i made?

QFT maing.....i was in london in early march of '06....and i was payin like $1.80 for 1 pound...(or quidd...however the hell you blokes spell it)

terrible man....everything there is so expensive....

if i were in england, id buy american electronics (ipods etc...)

youd *theoretically* spend half as much money doing it...

nope we could talk about this forever considering there could be a million reasons for these statistics. but the site i gave if you read it fully, really covers a ton of points/possibilities for this..

in any case i do understand now why discussions on these forums about international issues often lead to strange comments from americans..

its like $1.25 per euro now..opposite of 4 years ago

Yep, it's horrible the exchange rate between the dollar and the British pound.

But I love England and Scotland, so would probably go anyway. Also, Ireland - I've always wanted to go to Ireland.

Oh, and Amsterdam. Can't forget Amsterdam

Ha...well the red light district is fairly large..and its not always marked at every street entrance. Try taking a picture though, the hookers will start yelling at you and if you dont run for it you'll have some large guy standing infront of you demanding ur camera fairly soon.
But there are some unreal nightclubs and of course plenty of coffee shops & bars. FYI: The red light district after 11 pm is crawling with (foreign) criminals..Ive seen some nutty shit go down.

I hope people have stopped to think that a lot of Canadians get passports in order to travel to the US. You can get by without it with other documentation, but if you don't have that documentation, you might as well get a passport. The other item is that travel the from Canada to the US will require a passport either this year or next.

like i said earlier (and i cant even tell if you're talking to me), i was under the impression that after 9/11 they changed it to where you "have" to have a passport to go from Us/canada/mexico...however i just use my drivers license going in and out of mexico...

Americans don't have passports because they take their vacations to other states. This is a pretty bad comparison given the size of Europe and the size of the US.

Taking a vacation to California from New York City is a longer trip than say, going from Spain to France.

OMG dude... when you go from state to state here it's like another country. I'm from Alabama and I had a lil trip that took me to New york.,.,.,., WTF ? it was like they were speaking another language.
and there were diffrent countries in New york, lil Italy, China town and one for just about any country you can think of. save your money Just visit one of the larger cities in the U.S for your Culture Shock,Passports are just anther way for THE MAN to track you.

First time I went to NY it was definitely a culture shock.

Anyhow I'm still kinda confused at this "LOL Americans don't have passports" crowd. People like to take road trips in America, you can't very well take a road trip from New York to London can you?
