When a child says a dirty word or smarts off, some parents use soap, some use vinegar...

What about using hot sauce?

How about letting him say what he wants [=
Seriously Irrenarzt, my parents used that, and pepporicinis or jalepenos and it was effective to a point. I built up an immunity, if you will, which turned into a liking for them.

Today, I can almost eat anything and it's no big deal. I used to do shots of Dave's Insanity Sauce for $$$ in college just to make a few bucks here and there. No one believed it, and I cashed in huge a few times. I think the biggest was $50.

So, yeah, I think it works, but you'd better be prepared to take your kid to Mt. St. Helens if he has a really dirty mouth!
My 3 year old nephew would say 'more' to the hot sauce. He's liked spicey foods since he was just over 2.

I think the trick with soap is to just make them hold a bar of soap with their teeth. Their siliva will naturally disolve some of the flavor into their mouth. Also, as its sort of tedious for them to try to avoid the siliva eventually touching the soap. A pinch of pshycological torture in the mix.
The only problem I have with soap, is the chemicals in em'.

as long as the soap doesnt say "do not ingest/eat", you should be ok

I'm sure you have no problem taking a big lick of a soap bar yourself.

do you have children? If you do and they respond, remember, and abide by you saying no...you are the luckiest dad in the world.

I dont know that i'd use a hot sauce irr, maybe try a food you know they hate, like asparagus or squash or something. If they're too young, hot sauce may be too strong for their throats or stomach.

I know that I'm lucky, but I think that not spanking or yelling, and always being consistent is the key.

I can't imagine that not having some permanent psychological damage. Seriously, that's just freaky. Hey I'm no expert I don't even have kids, I'd probably just punish them by taking their favorite toy away. God knows it works on me.
Hot sauce would be bad, something evil parents would do, could burn the tounge, kids tongues are way more senesitive than adults. the kid wouldn't even need to eat the soap just make him/her lick it, that'll be enough, i'd use dove or ivory soap. we don't use soap we use the old 5-10 minutes time out in the bedroom, on the bed, no moving, no dolls, no tv, no games no nothing, just a timer. it's still funny as hell when my 4 yr old daughter swears tho like the time when her and i were wrestling on the floor and i was eggin her on so bad she got mad and yelled at me ' you little fucker ', i laughed so hard i couldn't send her to her room. or the time at wal-mart when she was 3, she saw some new toy on the shelf, threw her arms up in the air and said 'what the hell is this!'
You guys are soapaholics.

Ok...I am a mom of 2 (10 and 8 year olds) first off....how old is the kid? It also depends on the word too, we used to let them curse all they wanted, as long as it was at home. We set rules early, like no cursing at school, on the bus, or around grandma. We used soap (Dial anti-bacterial shower gel worked the best) just dont use so much that it will make them sick. Used hot sauce too when they were around 4 or 5 years old. After that stopped working we would put them in the corner or used the paddle as they got older. But the punshment should always fit the crime. And always think back to when you were that age, chances are, you were doing the same thing and can remeber how you were punished too...lol.

Just slap the little bastard in the face. Time proven technique which is NOT child abuse. Doing nothing and letting them grow up without any discipline is child abuse.
