EA secures exclusive rights to NFL video games.

December 13, 2004 - Just when you thought ESPN Videogames was catching up, in one move, they've never been farther behind. Electronic Arts announced today an exclusive licensing agreement with the National Football League and Players Inc. to develop, publish, and distribute interactive football games. These agreements give EA the exclusive rights to the NFL teams, stadiums, and players for use in its football video games for the next five years.

You read that right…exclusive rights to the NFL teams, stadiums, and players.

Meaning no ESPN NFL 2K6, no more NFL GameDay, and bye-bye NFL Blitz. All football fans will be left with are Madden, NFL Street, and a new unannounced football management game that is in the works from, you guessed it, EA Sports.

"All of our data shows that there is a huge market for manager-style games," said Jeff Brown, Director of Corporate Communications for Electronic Arts, "and you could see a new type of football game from EA."

The agreement also provides the opportunity for new games and for EA to access both NFL Films and the NFL Network for use in the games.

"We are pleased to expand our agreement with Electronic Arts, the leading video game manufacturer and a valued NFL partner," said NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. "We look forward to working with EA to continue to enhance the quality of NFL video games that our fans have enjoyed for many years."

"For more than a decade, EA has produced the most authentic football product for fans of the game" said Players Inc. Chairman Gene Upshaw. "This exclusive relationship will maximize the value of NFL players through EA's continued commitment to bring fans closer to the game."

"We are excited about the opportunity to further enhance our relationship with the NFL and Players Inc." said Larry Probst, Chairman and CEO of Electronic Arts. "The five-year agreements will usher NFL fans through the console technology transition with new ideas and innovative game play experiences."

The agreement covers consoles, PC, and handheld systems, as well as console online features. The agreement does not include other games available on the Internet or wireless devices, including cellular phones.

"We (EA) have proposed exclusivity several times in the past, but this year, in the spring the NFL had an off-site meeting, and they decided to consider bids for exclusivity," Brown told IGN in an exclusive interview. "Several bids were submitted but they accepted EA's. I cannot tell you how much this cost, but exclusivity is expensive, we are paying a premium. It wasn't cheap. I can tell you this, though, all parties all happy with this agreement, and Wall Street seems happy with it too."

Brown continued: "Look at what else EA has done, look at FIFA, PGA Golf Tour and NASCAR, we have exclusivity rights for all those licenses as well."

"The reason that you're noticing a certain vagueness to the language in the press release is because the license deals do not include smaller games such as Atari's Backyard Football; it's not subject to this agreement due to their numbers. And any wireless game or cell phone game is not part of the deal either."

Also not part of the deal are, obviously, non-licensed football games. The first company to come forward to IGN with such a game is Midway, makers of classic sports titles like NFL Blitz and NBA Jam.

Midway has hired the writer of the show "Playmakers" to develop a new title, Blitz: Playmakers. The game will feature everything the NFL hated about the TV show, including drug use, and off-the-field habits the NFL likes to pretend never happens.

According to an interview earlier this year with Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal, an NFL spokesperson confirmed that they were through working with Midway: "Midway has been quietly dropped in a 'mutual decision' as an NFL video game licensee after years of controversy over the level of violence in its NFL Blitz game."

When IGN contacted Midway about the rumored Blitz: Playmakers, a spokesperson confirmed the game's existence and told us: "Enough of the 'No Fun League'…it's now time to talk about and prepare for the game the NFL wouldn't let anyone make…Blitz the way it should be played."

Whether or not ESPN, 989, and Microsoft follow Midway's lead and develop football games without the license remains to be seen.

On a scarier note for these same publishers, rumors are already circulating that EA is attempting to negotiate similar deals with the NBA and Major League Baseball. When IGN contacted Trudy Muller, spokesperson for Electronic Arts about these rumors, she told us: "We cannot speculate at this time about any further plans these other leagues may have."

An ominous sign for sports game publishers everywhere to say the least.

I was just about to post this. I think this is a horrible idea. The ESPN NFL2K series really pushed EA to make their Madden games better. Without any major competition, I'm afraid EA might just sit back and rake in the dough without making any significant improvements year in and year out.

Isn't this more less monopolizing the field of video gaming in this genre? Which would be quite illegal

EA = becoming the Wal-Mart of the video game world. Want your money, wipe out the "mom and pop" game developers, don't care about you once you've bought the product, and a year later you can go back to "Wal-Mart" and buy the same pants but they have an extra pocket that you don't need....sorry I just woke up and I hope that makes some sense.

Hey, extra pockets are good sometimes. "Kicks" have a pocket in the seam on the side of the pants, very difficult to notice, as it's sealed with velcro(sp?).

EA, Kings of recycling shit. I will never buy another Madden game, 2004 was the last game I bought from EA. I happily pirated 2005, and will do the same for 2006. Fuck EA!

Its a damn shame that we will not see other NFL games, such as ESPN's NFL games, which imo were starting to get better then Madden, not to mention they were selling it for only 19.99$.

EA lost alot of sales when companies started selling their games for $19.99. Which is why EA did this. Now that they have the NFL rights, they force everyone who wants an NFL game, to buy from them, and them only. Thats fucking bullshit. To hell with them. Pirate all Ea games, destroy them!
EA games suck. This really blows. ESPN is 100x better than shit EA football. WTF is wrong with the NFL...
ya they do.. espn >>>>>>> i also wont play madden just because i hate fucking madden. That game makes me want to kill people. damn that man and his stupid, slow remarks.

got deagle?

Well color me different, I actually enjoy the EA games.

Although I am not to happy w/ what they are doing. But what do you expect. If Wal-Mart can do it, why can't they? It's how they will make money. It's business... unfortunately. I'm actually surprised the NFL went through w/ this, considering the money they make already.

EA support though is absolutely horrible. My brother could probably weigh in on the Motor City Online game they had a few years back. .... I believe that was an EA. Anyways I know he played an EA game that I didn't and said their game support was horrible.

Another thing was last year, when they released NHL 05, they didn't include any type of online compatability. Well they did provide their shitty online servers, but no online league support. I was all planned to get a bunch of people I played T2 w/ and get an online league going hosted on a spare box in my house. NOPE! Nothing doing there... I think the patch for online league support finally came like 6 months later. By then it was spring time and baseball was on my mind.

Well.. that was a rambling.. anyways EA support is fucking horrible. And now that they own the NFL rights, it will get worse. I guess I'll probably only get their sports games for the home systems. That way I get a final version and I don't have to sit there and wait for a patch or fixes to come 4 months down the line. :
EA was such a nice company back when they made great games for the C=64.... Archon II was teh pwn!
remember the nhl hockey games on the genesis, and the FIFA games? :>
Learn a little more about EA.

EA is a sweatshop. There is a link, in the link, to a live journal from an employee's spouse. It's interesting the way they treat employee's.

Repost of mine from another forum:

imo, the madden games certainly have more features and fluff - the announcing is better, the replays, better franchise mode, etc etc. However, when it comes right down to it, NFL2kX is just better gameplay. The controls are alot more intuitive. The animation is smooth and realistic. The AI is better.

The biggest thing is the play execution and stats of the players makes more of an impact. You won't find problems with players running the same play over and over - just like real football, a good player will change the play and wipe up the floor with them. You won't go running for 80 yard passes every play, I've only seen a hail mary type play work ONCE in the 5? years I've been playing the franchise.

I've directly compared them. 2004 I bought both games as I wanted to see what Madden had to offer. I came away disappointed. Normally football at my house is an event with my friends. There's booze, 2kX on the big screen and alot of yelling at each other. They wouldn't even touch Madden.

Overall the 2kX series lacks the polish of Madden, but the core system is FAR superior. It has better gameplay - the only thing that really matters in my book.

As far as the licensing, I think this is a horrible move on the NFL's part. It is effectively creating a monopoly and they are only doing it to get a piece of this cash cow that is video games. Their endorsement is hardly an indicator of the better game. They picked the game that made more money. Without the competition we're going to see a sloppier Madden release as the years go on. And ya'll think they'll drop the price to $30 or $40 next year now?? Hell no. With NFL's official endorsement, they can sell for $60 even if 2kX sells for $5 and will still outsell them.

Bottom line, this sucks for gamers. We were finally seeing some reasonable prices for a game genre that's re-released EVERY YEAR. We were also seeing significant enough competition that this re-release was going to be more than just a clone of the previous year with a new "dress the coach for the big game" mode. Instead now the NFL has killed the competition and we're going to see the same canned crap year after year for $50 or more.
monopolly anybody.......
Well.. There can always be ESPN: Canadian/European/Arena Football League 2kX
