I keep on getting these disk read errors! I got my system when it first came out so does that mean i need to get a new 1? I heard the lasers are bad in them. CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE ME SOME SUGGESTIONS??? Thanks for your help...

Me too...maybe a Ps2 thing...maybe a hacker!
Ship it in, i heard all old models can be refunded/or repaired for a lower rate.

Not sure if this is true.
do you get errors on all games ?

But it does sound like your laser is no good you can get them replaced but the price is not much off a new console so might be a good idea to sell it as spare or repairs and bye a new console
I have same problem, its the purple backed disc that dont work, i have no clue why !
Well the problem is your Playstation 2 and the reading lens of your PS2 is dirty (probably dust, maybe some hair etc.) which the system sucked in, no mater how clean the area around your console is, it still seems to suck up dust like a dust-devil. This problem seems to mostly affect CD Rom (blue/purple bottom discs) games, although it can also affect DVD Rom games and DVDs.

I also picked up my PS2 when it was launched back in 2000 and had the Disc Reading Error problem about two years ago, since my system wasn't under warranty and Sony wanted more than I was willing to pay to have it repaired, I had two choices, buy a new PS2 or repair it myself, so I opted to repair it myself (since I knew it was more than likely related to dust on the lens). I simply took my PS2 apart and blew it out with a can of air to remove all the dust and other crap that was sucked into it, after I did that my PS2 worked perfectly again. I had to repeat this process about three month ago when the Disc Reading Error reappeared, but since then my system's been running fine.

A friend of mine also recently had the Disc Reading Error problem pop up on his PS2, but he didn't feel like taking his system apart, although it only takes a few minutes, instead he turned on the PS2 and opened the CD tray, he then turned off the power so that the CD tray stayed opened and simply sprayed the can of air into the open CD tray towards the lens, this also seemed to work since he hasn't had any disc reading errors since then.
Excellent advice!

I actually have to do the same process not only with my PS2 but also with my stereo CD player.

The only time i got the Disc Reading Error problem was when i used a friends GameShark. Other than that i was fine + my PS2 was fairly new.
If you have an older ps2 and you have a blue disk game (Ie: TAA) Here`s what you should do (Becuase it worksed for me) Tilt your ps2 Like this /..Or this \..Or just put it straight up |, It should work for Blue disk games.
hey call the service hotline and tell them the problem. some dumbass will eventaully answer and ask u the stupidest questions like is it plugged in and some dumb system configuration stuff that doesnt work, then they will ask you if it is under warranty "mine wasnt" but i said it was and they told me to send it in and they fixed it for free. Didnt even ask for the warranty Thats what i did. Might not get as lucky as i did tho lol
Lets keep this between us tho shhhh...
