Please tell me how this makes any sense
Would just like to express my frustration to my situation and the current state of the 1v1 dogfight ladder as well as the complete lack of any admin support for it.
This initial portion is about my previous match against Sughart. As the defender I was able to choose two match dates. The match dates I chose were approximately a week and a half later than the initial challenge date. The reason for the later match times was because I had a malfunctioning joystick and was waiting for another to be delivered that was placed on back-order. I stated this in match comms and expressed my concern about being able to make the match dates. Sughart said he would wait until I resolved my hardware issue if need be. A few days passed and my new joystick was delivered. I stated in match comms several days before the match date that I was up and running and willing to do it whenever. Unfortunately Sughart had problems of his own as his PSU fried and he had to order a new one. Because of Sughart's willingness earlier to push the match to a later date should I need the time, I was more than willing to accommodate him and wait until his computer was back up and running. It should be noted that this all occurred roughly 3-5 days BEFORE the scheduled match date.
Weeks passed (as did the scheduled match date) and Sughart was still waiting on his PSU to be delivered from CyberPowerPC, who are notoriously bad at keeping deadlines. I've personally waited nearly 2 months passed the expected shipping date for a monitor from them. That's not really relevant or important to the subject at hand, but I'm still pissed about it (don't order from CyberPower, ever). It was a few weeks after the scheduled match date (and I'm sure after other ladder members expressed concern and brought it to the admin) before an admin even posted in our match comms. They wanted to know if we were still willing to play the match and that it was no problem if we wanted to do so. At this point Sughart still hadn't received his PSU and we both agreed that if the admin wanted to cancel the match it was fine with us. It should also be noted that the admin posting in our match comms was not the admin in charge of the ladder. This was the last contact we would receive from an admin and the only post from one in our match comms.
Fast forward to sometime last week, Sughart got his new hardware and was good to go. He said he could be on whenever I want to do the match. My schedule is pretty hectic and tentative but I was able to offer a few dates and times, saying I could be on for the majority of the night but had some commitments at certain times. I didn't receive a reply from Sughart about any specific date or time, so I just decided to idle on battlelog for all the time periods I offered. I was idling battlelog for several nights in a row. It wasn't a huge waste of time as I was doing homework or working on my design project the majority of the time anyways, while periodically checking my battlelog. The last date I offered was Friday (03/16/12) and I idled on battlelog for a total of about 8 hours that day until I went to sleep around 2:00 am. Friday was the last day I offered for a reason, as the next day I had to work until 5:00 am (bartending on st. paddys) and then from Sunday on I've been preparing for and writing exams. Today is the first day I've been able to breathe. I wanted to check match comms to see if I could get this thing over with finally and to my surprise I had been issued a forfeit loss.
I really don't understand how I should be the one that's punished for my actions. Despite my initial concerns I was ready and willing to play the match at the scheduled time and date. I accommodated my opponents hardware problems and opted to play the match at a later date. Both of us were willing to have the match cancelled but were given the admins consent to just play the match as soon as possible. When Sugharts hardware issues were resolved I offered several dates and times and was on during all of those times despite there being no response to them. I do not blame Sughart as he probably didn't have time to check the match comms until it was too late or possibly had other commitments. I also assume he's not from NA, making a lot of the times I offer not just inconvenient, but not possible.
It really is a shame that it has taken so long for the hardware issues to be resolved and that we were unable to be on at similar times in the past week, but what I fail to understand is how any of this is my fault and deserves a forfeit loss and dropping me from top spot to 11th in the ladder. If anything I'm being punished for accommodating my opponent, because at any point in time after the scheduled match date I could have asked for a forfeit win and would have the grounds to support it. Yes the match should have been cancelled much earlier and Sugharts position in the ladder should have been frozen until he could resolve his hardware issue (I believe this would have been more fair then just cancelling and allowing him to be challenged by others, only having to cancel/forfeit those matches as well), BUT that was the admin's mistake, not mine and not Sughart's. The admin chose to keep the match going far past the scheduled date. I appreciate that the admins are willing to accommodate hardware issues like this and bend the rules a bit for players. What I do not appreciate is a rushed decision brought on by the pressure of the community (funny how the only ones complaining were mostly baddies that would never contend for the top spot anyways) to fix an error in judgment on the admins part. Through the entire ordeal the only admin contact we received was a match comms post asking us if we wanted the match cancelled or if we preferred to play the match and the admin posting wasn't even the admin in charge of the ladder. Other than that one post (weeks ago) there hasn't been any attempt by an admin to contact us, or any warnings posted in match comms at all. I can understand if an admin were to post something along the lines of a warning requiring action within 24-48 hours and then terminating the match if the required action was not met, but no warning was issued and the match was not terminated but ended in a forfeit loss for myself.
This is completely ridiculous. From the scheduled match date on I was ready to play and provided ample opportunities. Like I said earlier, at any point in time past the scheduled match date I could have asked for a forfeit win. That's not why I joined this ladder, or any ladder/league ever. I joined to have some fun challenging myself in 1v1 competition against other skilled pilots. At anytime I could have said "fuck it, give me the win" and then been eligible to play another match. I don't need to rely on stalling match dates, winning by technicalities, or by bending and using the rules to my advantage in order to hold a top spot on this ladder. Anyone who's flown against me can testify to my position as one of the games (and series) top pilots. I have simply been punished for trying to accommodate my opponent. I am more than willing to accommodate others and abide by any rule set that an opponent presents, as long as I deem it fair (which the current rule set fails to achieve).
As you can tell by a lot of the reported match outcomes, people are NOT following the current rule set at all and simply making up their own rules. From what I've heard, common formats are one round first to 7 kills with both pilots using the F18 only, doing rounds where you switch sides every death, and doing only two rounds (one each side) having kills determine the outcome. With the current rule set, a heavy advantage is given to the attacker as he is given side choice for both rounds. It doesn't take a genius to see why this is a horrible idea. Then there's the current map list which shows a complete lack of knowledge about the game from the person who made it. There are maps that until just the recent patch had a flight ceiling of 300 and several maps that put the F35 up against the SU35. It takes about one minute of flying the F35 to figure out that the planes flight mechanics are completely crippled. If you can't figure out why the current map list is bad for the ladder then you are not qualified to be an admin for the ladder.
Normally I hold my tongue when I feel like insulting admins, because I understand that you guys do this for free and I do believe it is a thankless job. But seriously, how incompetent do you have to be to run a ladder this poorly? The rule sets are incomplete and difficult to interpret as it looks like they have simply been copy and pasted from another ladder and modified very little to suit this game type. The complete lack of knowledge of the game demonstrated in the current rule set shows TWL admins failure to do even the smallest amount of research into the game or game mechanics. I have e-mailed the listed admin (Speedy1) only to get no response and I have yet to see him comment on any of the posted issues in the forums or in match comms. I sent him an e-mail February 10th asking a question about the ladder rule set and still have yet to get a reply. I posted my question in the forums only to get an ill-informed response by an admin that appeared to have no experience whatsoever with the planes in BF3 (and of course it wasn't the admin in charge of the ladder). While I don't expect admins to be able to respond to our questions within 24 hours, receiving a response from the admin in charge of the ladder in the SAME FUCKING MONTH would be nice.
Just thought I'd vent my frustration to the current state of the 1v1 ladder and TWL in general. I see no reason to continue participating in the ladder until it has a proper rule set, maplist, and most importantly an ADMIN.
