(this was an old post I made back in BF2. The other day, I was cleaning out some old HD files and ran across this, cleaned it up some, hope this helps MadChild.)
There are a few simple things you can do to make your life alot easier on TWL. No matter if you're playing a league match or a ladder match, teams should ALWAYS do the following. (Note, leagues, you can change the time, but not the date or map)
Match Coms Guidelines:
As soon as match coms become available, post your own server ip and password, even if you're not the "hosting" team, and make sure the server is legal. Why post your own server info when the other team is hosting? So that way if they dont give you their server info in a timely manner, or there is a problem with the server, you have a legal fallback to goto.
Use match coms to work out agreements, not show how smart your mouth is. Match coms are there so teams can make binding agreements concerning the match. They are NOT the place for you to show off your mouth and act like a beliggerent jerk. If you can't communicate with the other team without being sarcastic or cussing, then don't post in Match Coms, let someone else do it. Use match coms, dont abuse them guys.
While we are on this subject, only one, maybe two, players on your team need to use match coms and actually post in them. You let 4 or 5 or 10 guys post, I have never seen it end well for your team. You have 13 guys on roster and make all of them a captain so they can see match coms, ok, there is a legitimate reasoning for this sometimes. But that doesn't mean they all have to post in match coms and treat them like it's a forum post. Do that, see how long you stay out of trouble and on TWL. Troll the forums, not the match coms. Keep personal comments and oppinions OUT of match coms. Treat Match Coms like a written contract for a match, just the facts.
Any agreement made in Match Coms is a binding agreement. On ladders, teams can, almost literally, agree to anything and it's binding. Want to play a different map? Want to use or not use a certain weapon or gadget? Want to play at a different time/date? Agree to it in Match Coms, you can and it's binding.
However, just because you say it in Match Coms, doesn't mean there is an agreement if there is no response from the other team. You can blow up Match Coms with all sorts of provisions and stipulations, if your opponent doesn't respond and agree to them, then there is no agreement and you have to play the match as is, TWL rules, date, time, and map.
TWL Competition Rules:
Know them, read them, understand them. If you quote them, do it by copy and paste, not by verbatium. Be exact. Also, don't start slinging rules unless you're 100% prepared to follow the same rules. TWL has rules set up to offer a structured, fair to both teams, enviroment to play a game competitively. These rules were not put in place for you to subjectively follow only when it's to your advantage. As part of playing here, you will run across teams that seem to think the rulesets are there as their own personal playground. They will bring up this rule, while violating 2 others, but "those just don't really matter because you guys did this". Guess again.
Match Play:
Be ready to join the server at least 15 minutes before the match time, this gives you ample time to get your players connected, adress any connection issues, check server settings, pblists/eligibility, and tk each other to get warmed up. When the site says "Match time at 9pm EST" that doesn't mean at 9:05 you start rounding your players up, discussing strats, who's doing what and checking out the server. Match time means the match is supposed to start at this time baring unforseen problems. You have a 15 minute grace period for connection issues. This doesnt mean you have 15 minutes after the posted match time to join. Get there early, be ready to play, at match time, because....
Once a match goes live, you have just accepted everything about that match as legal. Players, settings, the works. If you go live, you can not dispute a player already in the match for eligibility, or server/server setup.
Also remember, you are in a tense, competitive enviroment. Emotions can be high along with the stress levels. Try to keep your own players and yourself, under control. A good rule for your team, NOONE uses global chat other than 1 Leader/Captain. There is no reason for a player to talk globally during the match. In a decade of playing on TWL, I have never seen it end well for teams that hammer the global chat. At some point, if you and your guys spam global chat, someone is going to get pissed off and go to the admins. At first, unless you or your guys went overboard, it won't be a big deal. But let it repeatedly happen, and now you are going to be on the admins radar for your behavior, and what was once not a big deal, thru repeated abuse of your own, is now becoming a big deal and I have personally seen more than one player and/or team get suspended from play, if not ran out of TWL just because they couldn't control their mouths/chat. On the flip side of this, I have personally seen teams that seem on a mission to get you to lose control and hammer global chat. Why? So then they can come running to TWL and get a win they didn't earn. Think I'm crazy? Happens every game I have ever seen, and goes something like this...
"The other team was abusive to us, and started cussing in global chat, was mean, my feelings were hurt" ect ect ect...These teams will do some of the most obnoxious crap, from mis-quoting rules, to quoting rules that don't exist, to being just a pain in the ass in the match. And their mission is to get you to lose it and get them a, pardon my language but this is how it's refered to, "rulefuck win".
Luckily, after a few times of this, the admins will hammer THEM. But until them, don't take the bait.
And if you are one of those teams reading this, guess what? After you were acting beliggerent and quoting rules that didnt exist, do not come running to TWL to get a forfeit win because the other team has had enough of your deliberate crap, that you used to intentionally to get the other team upset, and expect TWL to go, "yep, they said asshole, they forfeit" You sit there holding up a match for 45 mins, quoting non existant rules, incorrectly quoting rules, ignoring admin directions you got on irc, and being a jerk but oh so careful not to curse, and then other team says 1 cuss word and think your going to get a win? Not hardly.
I will admit here and now, there are a few teams with some smart mouths. That's online gaming. But you also have a few teams that literally and blatantly, baited and baited and baited the other team, and when someone finally got aggrevated.... need I say more?
What to do during the match:
Play hard, have fun. Control your players in global chat, don't use hacks or exploits, and you should be in good shape 99% of the time. But, if during the match something happens that's against the rules, call it right then and there, because if not, and you keep playing, then lose, you aren't going to get a win by forfeit. I say this only about very clear cut things. If it's a grey area, note it, keep playing, then hit IRC and get an admin at the end of the round/match. But if it's in the rules, in black and white, no grey area, and you ignore it.... ignore it until you lose the round/match, now want to make an issue of it, nope. Odds are way against you.
What to do after the match:
If you lost, and have no complaints (per rules complaints) report the match. I'm not saying you have to be happy about it, who would be? I'm saying, be a man, and a gracious loser, post the loss, pick yourself and your team up, dust yourselves off, cowboy up and figure out what you did wrong so the next time you have a better chance to win.
But, something was wrong, you want to talk to an admin, then do NOT post the loss just yet. Follow your dispute rules to the letter. However, before you file a dispute, take a step back, go get a drink of water, whatever, get away from your team for a few minutes, calm down, regroup and ask yourself a simple question:
Did they break an actual rule or just piss you off?
And do not ask yourself this question right after the match when 8, 10, 12 of you are on vent/ts3/mumble screaming and fueling each others fire. Again, get up, away from your computer, walk outside, go get a drink of water, calm down! Then ask yourself the above. If they broke a rule, ok, gather your evidence, and file. If its a grey area, I would say ask an admin in irc before filing. Keep your guys off match coms, don't turn it into a cluster, and work with TWL to get it resolved.
On top of this though, "They beat us, no WAY they should have, CHEATS!" You bring up the word cheat, you better make damn sure you have your act together and follow cheat dispute rules TO THE LETTER! The biggest insult anyone can give to another team is call them hackers and then offer literally ZERO proof. In fact, there is a specific rule on the books regarding blatantly filing bogus cheat disputes, I know because I was the author of it way back when. We were getting WAY to many disputes that read as follows.. "they made several funny shots and at one point one of their players shot X number of our players in a row. They cheat, give us the win" This is NOT a valid cheat dispute, the above is a Flagrant Cheat Dispute and you will get penalising for filing them, harshly. You call a cheat and give evidence such as, "player X at this time did this, then at this time, this player did this and this, then this, and then this happened again with this player". You give very detailed and specific instances for the AC staff to look at including who, what, when, and where. But if you can't even tell TWL who to look at in some form of time frame, you're going to be the one in trouble.
