Myself and a few friends have been waiting ages for this game, it's finally entering closed beta (first CB test was last weekend). Alpha was good, it's even better now in beta (thankfully, some games go the other way...).
Official release is 12.12.12

Originally, it was only like 6 guys working on it, they did a ton of amazing work that brought videos such as this to light:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udEAEARD-Fo
That is very early footage.
Since then, they've increased in size and it's been nothing but good as far as I'm concerned.
Somewhat of a mix between a mech "sim" and an FPS, you'll notice it's faster than your avg mech warrior game, but still has elements such as torso twist restrictions that keep it from being too far in the FPS side.
There is a tech tree and leveling, but, in one weekend (and not even many hours in that weekend) of playing, I got one mech half way to full level, and they're talking about possibly making leveling faster. So that shouldn't be a huge issue as far as competition goes. Even as a low level, you still have just as good a chance against max levels if you're good.
Currently, there are 4 game modes:
Siege:
My personal favorite. Essentially you fight to control energy deposits, then take energy gathered back to your base. The collected energy powers a battleship that launches once enough energy is accumulated. Once a battleship is launched, both needs fight for control of a single AA turret. If the enemy team controls the AA turret, it will shoot down your battleship. The goal is to have your battleship reach the enemy base. If it reaches the enemy base, it takes one of three hit points away. Once a team loses all three base hit points, they lose.
Here is a video of siege that I did not take (and am not going to comment on the skill of this player (aside from I don't know how he misses so much))

Missile Assault:
I don't need to write out an explanation, this 1min video does it quite well

TDM:
Just like any other TDM.
DM:
Free for all \o/
As far as competition goes, I think Siege and Missile would be spectacular. Never hurts to have TDM ladders as well.
Check it out, this game could be the next great PC competition game.
Oh, and they're not developing it at all for consoles \o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/
