From DruMAX:

"I would think its not 'cheating' to play a guy not on your roster as long as the other team says its okay and you dont sneak them in or they arent banned player"

Yes, I think you are exactly correct Dru... we have asked permission to play subs in matches and have been granted same on occasion [though on some occasions permission was denied and we had to llama – or play 2 men down - cruel perhaps, but fair enough I reckon, certainly within the rights of the opposing captains to require us to restrict ourselves to teaming players who were on our roster – that’s how I read the rules anyway].

OTOH, I think that teaming a player that is technically ineligible needs to be taken in context with the portion of the rules that require captains to validate the roster of the opposing team at the start of a match [just as they must validate the server at the start] - and the fact that the rules imply that once a roster is accepted [as evidenced by playing the match] that acceptance cannot be taken back... in other words inspect and object to the roster before the match, or forever hold your peace.

That part I get... what I don't get is repeated references to the idea that smurfing is something "everyone" does and that while it is “technically” against the rules, it is in actuality OK as long as you don’t smurf a "known" cheater. That line of reasoning strikes me as circular and self contradictory [not at all grey… unless grey means “all fucked up”]. How can you validate a smurf given that by definition it is a guy playing under a false name [which in itself is cheating<>?

While I would grant you that there should be gradations of punishment for the severity of the crime, I get lost on the idea that some crimes taint crimes at all… but rather are something “everyone” does… if that be the case, would someone please tell me which of the rules are not “real”… then I can stop being an “asshat” by expecting other people to observe them.

From Biscuit:

“I wonder how you get by every day if you live in such a black and white world. Don't come to me about the letter of the law, you don't know the FIRST thing about it.”

Actually, that is not correct. The fact is I know a bit about law, but I fail to see how that is germane.

I am making a serious inquiry to the TWL base community with regard to a widely held understanding with regard to player eligibility that is in direct conflict with the written rules. You obviously have decided that the questions I have raised are all about you… they aint…. so please take a deep breath, and lighten up on the name calling.

“In YOUR case, a player was teamed and it was pointed out he was in-elligible, and he dropped, LESS THAN A MINUTE LATER, he never even spawned. At the point in the match, there was no score, grabs were even, and frankly, your team was doing fine. INSTEAD OF REALIZING THEY DROPPED THE PLAYER AND CONTINUING TO PLAY, you wah'd your way to the admins. “

I assume you are referring to the C23 match that was recently killed… if so, you need to review the facts… the player in question was teamed, had earned a positive score prior to leaving the server, and was only removed after repeated objection by us that he was not on the C23 roster… a roster which both team captains had gone over immediately prior to the start of the match… but we digress.

“Play the game, PLAY THE GAME....meaning, get on the server, initiate the match, and PLAY THE GAME. If there are serious infractions, there is help to be found. “

Aaaahhhh thank your that… we arrive at my question.

I want to know… if you can tell me… which of the rules are “serious” and which ones are not?

I really want to know. The rules instruct captains to validate the opposing roster prior to play, and state that objecting to same later is disallowed, and that teaming an in-eligible player after the match starts will result in an automatic forfeit. The rules also state that smurfing is not allowed.

But based on many recent comments made in these forums [including yours] it is becoming obvious to me that these aint really the rules. If objecting to the roster used in match after the fact is disallowed, then “If there are serious infractions, there is help to be found” makes no sense… nor does the idea that smurfing is OK unless the smurf is a “known” cheater.. unless some infractions matter, and some don’t… and all I’m asking is that someone tell me which ones don’t matter.

I see no need for the question of what an eligible player to be so dodgy… and I don’t see how a big “grey area” as to player eligibility can work if playing the match equals tacit acceptance of the opposing roster.

I apologize in advance for the fact that you take these questions personally… I never intended for you too. I am merely trying to get some feedback on issues that IMO do not make sense, and I would very much appreciate it if the leaders in this community would address them... if that upsets you, please do not feel the need to reply.

Thanks

Now I dont know the whole story of what happens but this is the way I see it. If you find out there is a smurf on a team and you as captian do not want them to smurf...dont play until it is resolved team to team...if the team wit the smurf wont make it right then dont play the match and go to your ladder admin with it. I also think that if the match is plaed and THEN a complaint is made regarding a smurf, then although tech I guess if you can prove they smurfed then the punishment should still hold but the thing is, you get into a situation where one might ask...

if you report a minor violation (yes, a normal smurf is a bit minor, at least in my eyes since as a captian I have never disallowed stand-ins anyway) after the match...then people will say rule fuck or ask..."what if you WON the match...would you still report?"

I think the best thing is to move on and be carefull in the future if you ever play that team again. Some teams are just cool and others need to be watched is the way I see it.

Once we played team that asked us to be lenient about something, we said yes...we had a new player not on the TWL roster yet...we asked if we could play him...they said no...LOL!! I dont know why they said no to us when we said yes to them...I wanted to take back my yes but my level headed teammates just told me to forget about it and play...

Thats what you should do when more minor things happen...just forget about it and play...remember what happened and be carefull next time...its just a game

Good point of view DruMAX.
The one thing to remeber about the differences here is that PHer had already been banned for cheating, was smurfing in a match. If you combined those two infractions, I see that it is more severe then our situation every was. However, I understand what Foz is asking. He wants to know at what point do the rules become the wall, rather than the ball.

But I think you are right, someteams need more focus than others. And that has to do with your relation ship with that team.
Thanks Dru... that strikes me as sound advice... and much inline with Biscuit's admonition to “PLAY THE GAME”!

As far as accepting the use of ineligible player… in that case I would think the issue becomes moot… as best I can tell from reading the rules, if you accept em they cease to be ineligible… in that case STFU and play is a no-brainer.

But what if it’s a situation where your answer to a request/attempt by an opponent to team ineligible players is “no” - yet ineligibles get teamed anyway once the match starts. One could walk away from the match asking the admins to enforce the forfeit rule [which doesn’t strike me as absurdly harsh treatment of the team in violation – to have to start their challenge cycle over and maybe do things right next time - same thing as an honest llama], or, if I understand you correctly, do as you would suggest and play on and let the admins sort it out later hoping your objections were noted in demos and had not lost their validity due to the fact you played the match... is that right?

If so, my remaining concern on this question arises from the fact that the rules state that playing the match = acceptance of the opponents roster. If the rules were changed, I could understanbd the answer “object – then play –the admins will sort it out later” and I would count that as a good solution. That way, if the admins [upon review] call the player in question ineligible after the fact the violating team forfeits – everyone gets a game out of it in any event [even if it might not count as valid ladder competition once a judgment is made by the admins]. If that is the consensus answer, and FWIW, I would endorse it, then I suggest that the following excerpted section of the rules needs to be reconsidered, as follows:

“It is the each team's responsibility before the match starts to see that all players are legally registered on each teams roster. After match start or completion, roster disputes are not valid justification for forfeiture or admin intervention. Substitute players, brought in during match, that are not eligible players by the above criteria, will force an immediate forfeiture on the part of the team they were playing for.”

The remaining question is smurfs… seems to me the rules are clear that this is not allowed… but OTOH the community consensus is not at all clear, as many seem to think it is OK as long as the player isn’t banned. Do you reckon that using a smurf = forfeit or is it a grey area to you?

Foz
I would have let a sub play but my team has never used a smurf, we are straight up and just ask if we can use a sub...I do not go along with the 'smurf is okay' rule because its trying to do things sneaky. I think subs are okay and smurfs arent...the team that uses a smurf should lose if found out...that doesnt seem harsh to me. Just my opinion...and I agree that it should just be stated in the rules that if you dont object at the start to a sub or smurf then its moot after the game is played. If it happens mid game and you object but continue to play, again it becomes mute...you should halt the game until it is resolved IMO.
An aside to all of the above:

The recent -=AGB=- vs. C23 match up is history, I don't see any point in rehashing it, and I aint nagging at anyone about the results. The admins have ruled - we objected - they affirmed the prior ruling - it's over.

I just want to the get a read on the community's interpretation of these rules and how our team's captains should handle em in the future.

After having a couple teams take advantage of me, I enforce rules to the point of being ignorant unless I know the team.
I never saw the point in smurfing anyway.

If you have the balls to cheat, then have the guts to do it under your regular name and suffer the consequences - if any are handed down.

Advice: If you need a sub, be sure they're not a smurf. If you know they are, don't ask them. Add some {RiP}'s to your buddy list. We'll gladly sub for a team. Not to extract tactics, but to help out a fellow team. I have at least two players of the major teams in the ladders buddy listed for that reason as well as finding some good action on a pub

If ONE was down a player and wanted to sub a player from ATF, osis, BMX, etc - I'd have no problem with it. I doubt the team would either. It's not fair to make a team play a man down. I'd rather have an even teamed match even if it means subbing a player from another team. Real Life has a habit of making some things more important than matches for people.

We've even let people sub members of their recruit teams cuz a primary had a sudden case of real life and they were short a person. No big deal. Helps them out too by seeing how the recruit will handle in a match

That's one thing the BEML does that I like. A team can use a sub of another team as long as they are on that league's roster overall. A privelege not to be abused, and it doesn't get abused. If team captains approved, I doubt the admins would have an issue with it. I just would have issues if a team subbed a player who was not part of a team in the ladder.

The rule does need to be clarified. Because as it stands right now if the team you are playing say's they won't accept any more subs all you have to do is get get your sub join after the match starts. Even better, claim he is on your roster.

This forces the other team to send a player to check the roster which they may not do and you will get to play the player. If they do check the roster and find out you lied then the match will just be killed with no penalty to the offending team and hopefully you will get more players next time you challenge them.

Obviously not an ideal place to be but that the ruling that we have right now and I personally don't think it's healthy to the ladder. Bargaining and agreement between teams should remain between teams but when a team will not or can not bargain they need a hard and fast rule to point to.
True. One thing we've strived to accomplish in AGB is to "know" our roster, know our players. I personally know Boog, met his family, and all that jazz, but for other members on our team, that isn't possible. How we compensate for this is to stress the importance of voice comms in practices and in matches. We've had some members give us the "my mic is broken, not working, don't have one" stuff, and in many cases it is legit. All of our players who play in matches, must have a working mic, and we have to talk to them before we play them on a regular basis. Is this method foolproof? Hell no, but I know most of our players voices and if it doesn't sound like them, then ya gotta question who is playing.
I know smurfing may not seem like a big thing to some people, but it is. In my professional studies, I have to provide not only a valid student card, but also photo identification. Why? Probably because somebody in the past tried using someone else to take the exam for them and therefore, the need for such controls. Also, the rules are pretty straightforward, get caught cheating, say goodbye. FYI, this is for the Canadian equivalency to the US CPA program (both have rules, standards of conducts and ethics) and trust me, pissing away $10,000+ over one chance to cheat isn't worth it to me...but still some try.
Let's get the terminology right:

Smurf = a player using a different players account to fein eligibility or get around a ban. The intent of the smurf is to specifically get around the rules.

ineligible player/standins = a player who is not eligible to play, but plays with his ineligible account. Honest teams will bring the fact that their player is ineligible up before the match and ask if they can play anyway. Dishonest teams will team an ineligible player after a match has started in hopes that the opposing team won't notice the violation and they'll get around the rules.

So smurfing and teaming ineligible players can be similar if it's done in a way to circumvent the rules (and the punishment should be the same in my opinion).

If, however, you agree to play with an ineligible player before the match starts (explicitly or implicitly), then no punishment should be meted.

We've had experience in the past were teams (usually all-star teams) have asked us if they can play an ineligible player. As long as they had tags, we never cared. In one instance, however, they brought in a ringer shriker for the first map who was most likely smurfing as well (not that many shrikers in the game who were as good as this guy). We let the guy play and his shriking slaughtered us. The next 2 maps did not have shrikes and he announced he was going to drop to let others play.

After the match, the guy dropped from the team never to play for them again.

Because of this incident, we no longer allow ineligible players to play.

P.S. I'm not sure about the details of this incident, but in the future try to get Kodiak to rule on disputes instead of other ladder admins. Kodiak has shown himself to be fair, impartial and concerned about our ladder. Ladder admins of other ladders really don't care about our ladder and have even been complicit in some of the abuse our ladder receives from the larger community.

I agree 100%. As I stated in my other posts, while we might not always agree with the ruling, it does help (both for you, your team, and the admins) to realize that they are volunteers, ruling impartially, and for the best interest of the ladder. While they cannot always give you what you want (100% satisfaction guarantee), they will do their best to give you what you need (a quick, unbiased decision). Keeping this in mind when you get their decision may help you best choose your next path of action.

One thing that I keep seeing here is the need for honesty. As seasoned vets of this ladder and this game, I've seen alot and heard alot...and what I've found is that if you are straight up with others, then for the most part (unless you are a complete dick and have successfully alienated the community) people will give you a break if you are straight up (as were Soul in our match, and as were we with ATF a few weeks back) Soul allowed a sub, ATF didn't, but in both cases, we were straight up and the matches went forward with fun had by all...and everyone is the better for it because we can look back on the game, and not the controversy.
Stop the hate, send $5 to the "I SoopaNoobie fund" and I will ensure that needy noobs everywhere can feel da lub!
Look bro, here's another way to look at it.

Okay, it IS cheating. And fie on them.
But so what? If the smurf is the difference between their playing and not playing, wouldn't you rather just play the match? Sure, you could call a technicality. But look, if they drop the match, odds are you'll just have to play them again, once they get their roster squared away.
So by calling the technicality, you achieve nothing, simply delaying a game, and you wind up looking like a rules-lawyer. You don't look like a good sport, and you create a lot of resentment where there's no need.
Not to mention, the rest of the ladder hears about it and you get a reputation for winning games by rules-lawyering and not playing. Who wants that?
Everything boils down to one thing soopa says...just be straight up..period. If there is a situation where this falls under the carpet, it will be looked at, leniancy will 99% of the time be given to the fact that there could have been a mistake, and after demo review the game was not affected...such was the AGB / C23 match. But...that applies ONE time. That's it. It's rare that things ever reach me, especially from here, but there are not second chances.

The fact is these 2 situations cannot even be compared, its totally seperate, and the smurfing decision was not a first case issue.

Also, phierce. It did go to Kodiak. It never went to the admin of another ladder.

That's kind of how we feel too. If we find a team using an ineligible player we'll ask them if they have anyone else available and if they do, we'll ask that the eligible player plays instead of the ineligible, but if that's all they have then we'll go ahead and let them play, just for the fact that if we win we want it to not be because they were short ppl.

Ara,

IMO, if we needed a sub, I'd consider you an eligible player to ask.

Dunno, maybe it's just me, but (for the honorable players) we're all on the same team ultimately. No probs helping each other out

I like Ara, but cmon...if I need a sub, I need one who can do more than beacon & mine repairing

JK...only trying to add some humour to an already dismal and crappy day to Aratharn...you know that already tho.
Hence why in the "GGs 23" thread, Ara said that he was glad they had 7 show. Otherwise you get tons of excuses that they played a man down, and it all-around more fun to play an evenly matched team.

I've become very good at beaconing mines WHILE repairing them... BEAT THAT!
Bah. Ara can only do mine repairing in the security of his own base. The REAL skill is in OOB mine repairing.
