I remember a time...

Tribute to Tribes 2 and the once vast and great players of Tribes 2 from all over the world

I remember a time when I was a NOOB to the game of T2, When you could find Thousands of players on hundreds of servers everyday at any given time, and there were so many players that people specialized in one particular field…because there were so many to contend with. I remember a time when on any given day you could not get into any of your favorite servers because everybody on them was having so much fun they would stay full for hours on end, and you were forced to play anywhere you could get on. I remember a time when there were so many people on your buddy list playing it would tear you apart trying to decide where to play, and you could find people and friends in any game type playing for hours not even thinking of anything else. Siege, Capture the Flag, Arena, Rabbit, Team Rabbit 2, Gauntlet, Duel Mod, Death match, Mini Rabbit…and so on, were filled with the best you would ever see. I remember a time when the Ladders were full of teams’…teams that had the greatest reputations and the best players or so we all believed, teams that we wanted to be a part of.

I remember a time when the best teams and players would gather on one server anywhere…or there private server to prove who was better, and had fun doing it. I remember a time when Teams like ARES, PEN, 311, ck, wow, (8), the wears, Wicked Skillz, ETI, Ni4NI, Geez, OAC, stj, DoF, BEE, Royal Knights, ^R|A^, Blood Legacy, KimChi and many…many others dominated the ladders with fierce competition. I remember a time when Great players such as Mr. Chong, Big A, Bursting Dragon, Blazing Tiger, Septose, 1^off, Mailer, Arsenist, Baby Blue, Kamikaze Samurai, Kamikaze taco, Kamikaze Raptor, Katman, STHM, Taco Grande, Gigashadow, Marlboro Man, Bonita Bruja, Eagleeye 1, Bob2U, nightwear, firmwear, JetSolo, BainGriever, White, Fujilives, Angry^Beaver, Saint and hundreds of other awesome players were constantly in the game competing with the best they could. I remember a time fighting in fierce battles with all these players in the sky, on land, under water, in buildings, in all types of vehicles, in desert or in snow.

I remember a time when game play was at it’s best, when people had respect weather you win or loose, when people trash talked for fun and showing love no matter what the outcome of the battle…win or loose they congratulated you…and you the same. I remember a time when the game was pure and the maps were the right size…when battles never ended…the maps just changed, I remember a time when the defense and offense was so good nobody really knew who won…it might have been pure luck or really good teamwork coordination on that play. I remember a time when Tribes was so fun you actually called in sick to play…or broke plans with others to lay down a beating. I remember a time when the better player tried to help others instead of reminding them how much of a NOOB they were and cutting them down. I remember the best times that this game offered, fun play, good people, fierce battles, full servers, great competition, different styles of play in different arenas of combat, teaching and learning to be a better player. I remember a time when the game did not have to be patched every week to fix bugs and exploited cheats. I remember a time when player skill was pure and not reached from scripts that play the game for you.

I remember a time…

I dont remember a time when teams showed respect win or lose, I just remember the teams that did, and do.
I remember when there were 75+ teams in the 7man.

And yes, the days before scripting became the "leveling of the playing field" it was pretty intense on the pubs.

Got some good gameplay these days on RD's and the Fri/Sat PU's, but it's nothing as it used to be.

Damn, I hate watching a good game die very slowly. Watched it with Unreal 1 and now with T2.
Kamikaze taco and Kamikaze Raptor were both on my 7man classic team less than a month ago.
Seems no matter how great the game or how close the community is, all online games go down this path. Unreal 1 had the closest community I have ever seen in a online game. Slowly the cheats and argueing crept into the game and now it is all but gone. The worst thing about it is now the scripters have finally come up with foolproof anti-cheats and the game is already dead.

I played Return to Castle Wolfenstein during its peak and although a great game, it slowly died and was replaced. At least the makers of RTCW contracted a company to keep up with the cheats.(punkbuster) It still died out and people moved on...

T2 is showing the same signs as all the previous mentioned games. People love the game but find a newer more advaced one to play. It is not dead yet and still shows signs of life. If Sierra would have gotten off their butts and worked on keeping up with the community as far as cheats and such, it may not have died out so fast. A big company like Sierra should contract an anti-cheat company to help the community with it's problems. After Unreal 1, the Unreal series had a company that worked on cheats. Wolf had a company that worked on cheats. Why does Sierra not have a company that works on cheats? I guess they only care about the money and not the community...
I WUB JOO GUYS!
craig = ghoststakler or something like that
Tribes isn't dying because of cheats or scripts. It's dying because its over 3 years old, that means no one new is coming in, and slowly over time people leave for different newer games.
That's the way of all games, sadly.
Bah that wasnt THAT long ago...

The community was even better IMO: When we still had a active 16 man base ladder, when a team like 5150 was awe inspiring when there were over 150 teams on the 7 man ladder, when spam was barely used, when cheats were not even a thought on most ppl's mind, and when the 12 man ladder was a great place to play.

STILL Good post, its covers what many of us are feeling I am sure.

Actually the cheats are accellerating it. I know several people and teams who have quit because of cheats.

That being said, it is pretty remarkable that we still have this base community after 3 years (and much abuse).
all i read was the first few sentances and all i can say is....amen brothar

History repeats itself. The same thing happened in T1. I was part of the Havoc community, a community I would liken to this base community. It slowely died as will this one, but thank god for T3
I forgot to take my hat off, bow my head, and say "amen, brother".
