Very Important Question!

After discussing with a few members, I find it important for the short-term development of this ladder to ask the following question:

"Which teams actually have a TRUE server?"

By True I mean NOT running on a standard CABLE or DSL line.
I know some teams have serious servers capable of handling high player counts, but how many teams are running VC on OC48, etc rigs???

If this number isn't the majority, I think we have a serious problem. Cable and DSL modems can only hold 12 players before starting to lag out like crazy.

I think team leaders need to reply to this thread.

As for ORT, we are currently looking for servers to lease, but there are very few that run VC yet. If there are some, please let me know which ones (other than JOLT).

Recongamer: will not have VC.

We have a dedicated 24/7 28 player server on a 3mb cable. Its seems to run pretty good. We have not had to many complaints about lag when the server is full. I dont know if thats what you mean by true server but i know it runs a hell of alot better then are old t1 server we used to have for quake2 and kingpin
We (clan STD) has a dedicated vc server on an OC-3 line I beleive. Whatever it is...it's enough to handle whatever.

"What the hell is this?" "Its a Peace symbol sir." "What does your helmet say?" "Born to kill sir." "What the hell is going on?" "I guess I was just trying to point out the duality of mankind."

my point is, that out of 21 teams, I suspect only 6-7 of em' have "playable" servers for 16 people. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't find any Gaming Hosts that will run Vietcong and I know that very few teams have access to OC3, 12, 48, 192 rigs.

-A- dosent have one were going to leech off of you all......on a side note we're looking for a host but are having problems finding one
Contrary to what many may say, you can actually host decent games on a good cable or dsl link. ThC has 3 such servers (dedicated) and they handle up to 16 players without a problem -- providing that everyone has a ping of around/less than 100-175. As a general rule of thumb, You'll need at least 512Kbps of upstream bandwidth to host a decent game.

However, for clan matches, it is DEFINITELY recommended that you play on the fastest link/box that you can.

So, that said, ThC is willing to help "broker" scheduling clan matches for TWL-registered & active clans. We don't have "top of line" anything, just a few geeks who have graciously opened their boxen to us. Some of the links are fast and the machines are quite capable. Basically, we want to extend the priveleges we have to other clans in the hopes of strengthening the server pool -- and thus strengthening community.

I've spoken with TooSmooth over at GeekEmpire and he seems interested. The way it will work is this (and bare in mind, this is all "proposed" no one has to committed to anything!):

1.) ThC, ORT and possibly PTX will share the responsibility of admining GeekEmpire.com's server.
2.) The aforementioned clans will also "sponsor" other clans and help arrange for clan matches (if clans find the environment to be suitable).
3.) Scheduling disputes should be resolved peacefully and in an adult manner. All other disputes will be forwarded to the aforementioned clan captains (Whiplash, Zandog, and myself). Ultimately, TooSmooth will have the final word-- because it's his iron, and his buck is paying the rent.

We have other boxes, but availability may not be the same:

#Pl. admin server connection/location
--------------------------------------------------
32 powaho b0k b0k b0k Full T1/NYC
06 gmac victoriasmackdown 8Mbps Cable/Victoria BC
20 gmac victoriabc 8Mbps Cable/Victoria BC
16 freedom bongsen 8Mbps Cable/Victoria BC
50 weedwarrior weedwarrior 2.5x1.5Mbps DSL/Seattle
32 toosmooth geekempire 2x2 Mbps Cable/Cinc, OH
20 pirate goodmorninvietcong Full T3/Fresno, CA

Hope this helps.

That a seriously generous offer Freedom....

I think most of us were afraid that we'd be screwed till a win32 or linux stand alone client came out
I had a good server up till a week ago, so I guess I will stay out of this bussiness for now untill I get(if at all) my server back.
1/8th has a T3 that handles up to 32 with no problems (not counting acts of terrorism or god or the occasional noob with a 1200 ping, however give admin a sec and hell be gone)
The idea is excellent Freedom (as we discussed over emails). This would only be temporary of course, until VC is hosted by major providers.

My main concern was to not be able to start/stop the server for our matches. So, what you are saying is that we could have semi/administrative priviledges for one of these servers that would allow us to set it up. Once a match is over, the priviledge would be handed back to the owner of the server?

If so, that's great.

Close. What I'm saying is that ORT helps admin this server and in turn has access to a place to hold their clan matches if need be... Or, ORT simply helps admin the server in an effort to build up the community -- both around the game, and around the "culture of ORT." As it stands right now, you can't change maps/gamemodes/game-end rules/pw-protection remotely; however, those tools are coming soon... So in the interim, you would be in contact with TooSmooth to configure the server for your match(es). This puts you guys directly in touch with the host -- who seems fairly open to it, primarily because he wants his server admin'd by reputable clan-folk.

Sound reasonable?

Awsome idea guys but id remove those admin passes from the forums. They'll definatly get in the wrong hands. Probably should email them to the team founders so they can be passed out amongst the teams.

sounds great Freedom. Thx for the vote of confidence.
Things are working out fiarly well. PTX has decided not to join this league until there is a U.S. division, something we see happening soon. I the mean time, PTX will prepare for league play and get ahold of those dedicated server files, PTX is now offering 3 100mbit connectioned servers that will be admined by *PTX*, {thC} and ORT. When these go live, they leaders will be e-mailed.

For more information on the servers PTX will provide:

The PBG clans runs their servers on 10 mbit broaband and we usually never have lag probs.
The server issue is actually extremely important. We will not compete in TWL until we have arranged a good server. We're talking to game.net who hosted two excellent servers in the demo. However, the past two weeks it is very quiet... they have said that hosting the demo was a good test for them and they are considering Full Version, but how, where and when???

I hereby call upon Sipio and R3tr0x to mail game.net requesting info, they might have the EU servers we need!
