Dynamite near friendly objectives?

Historical capture recovered from the Wayback Machine · captured 2003-09-14 · 13 posts
I'm working on some gameplay fixes for ET Pro.

Whats the general opinion on dynamite near friendly objectives?

If you drop a dyn just a little too close to a friendly objective and try to arm it, the dynamite disappears and you have essentially wasted the charge.

Eg. on goldrush the tank is at the second barrier. If you drop the dynamite just a little too close to the tank, your dynamite is deleted when you try to arm it.

One might argue that players should be more careful and that the server shouldnt compensate players for doing dumb things.

So... should players get their charge back if their dynamite can't be planted?

Or maybe make the dynamite ignore friendly tanks?

Having the tnt ignore friendly objects (ie. tank) would probably be best. Even if they get the charge back it's still a few seconds wasted which is more than enough time for the other team to drop the eng.

Bani, have you considered teaming up with the Shrub guys in making a competition mod? They seem like they've got a head start into the approval of the leagues. They could surely benefit from having your expertise onboard.

With the two groups together, there would be 1 centralized competition mod and the players would get the best possible product. With the layout as it is now, I'm afraid that et pro would lose out and not neccessarily for the right reasons

Also, let dyno be planted wherever. Just dont' let it harm the objectives you're defending.
shrub isnt interested in cooperation, as far as I can tell. hes never responded to me, ever. ill leave it to the players to pressure shrub to approach me about collaboration on a tournament mod. players will have a greater influence on him than i ever could. but im pretty sure he will reject the idea outright.

as far as "head start" the only league i know of where this is the case is twl. twl is "locked in" to shrub and the admins arent interested in considering anything else. the TWL admins seem pretty secretive about the whole thing really -- quite a shame.

other leagues ive talked to eg CAL are open to whatever best meets their requirements. im working closely with them to solve issues for competition play.

so even though TWL is permanently locked in to shrub, i'm still interested in hearing TWL input on game issues as they are likely to be common across leagues.

Hmmm, I'm sorry I didn't see this post sooner. As I stated to Noir(from my own clan no less *sigh*) and Majikthise in IRC, I refuse to get involved petty Mod-community altercations. I don't know the history behind it, nor do I want to, all I want is the community to get a functional competitive mod in order to rectify bugs and tune certain gameplay elements. You all have to realize, there is apparantly some "history" here from RTCW modding which has spilled over here sickeningly enough.

That said, thats very ballsy to completely misconstrue the entire situation on our own forums no less, for the purposes of pushing your mod. Not to mention its also damaging to the competitive community which you have not participated in(RTCW nor ET unless I'm mistaken?).

The fact of the matter is Shrub simply got the code before you, I approached him about making the competitive mod first(due to him implementing several good ideas in Shrub_ET). We were working on it a full week(I solicited ideas from several people, looked at bug forums, etc.) before Noir told Majikthise and, subequently, you, what we were working on.

That was a mistake on his part, it was supposed to be a secret at first due to the fact I didn't know it was feasible and it would be completely irresponsible to promise something or get peoples hopes up about something that couldn't be delivered or rush something out just to slap a mod Tournament title on it. Despite that, I announced we were working on the mod in a PW post and several my "to do" lists were floating around about what was needed.

It was simply a matter of respect for me to stick with Shrub, as I said, I was working on it with him for a week(prior to you even getting the code from SD I believe? I could be wrong), he did everything we needed in an expeidiant manner and it worked. After all of the major work was done then Noir approached you and then this little drama ensued. It would have been plain wrong for me to abandon Shrub or to suggest you collaborate with him after he finished virtually everything that needed to be done for our purposes. It would be nice if ideally you two could work together, thats a given, but I could understand his view point on the manner too. Or, alternatively, he may just have been AFK. Sometimes people PM me and then my connect dies and they think I've ignored them.

If you're going to post here, at least be honest about what happened. Theres nothing wrong with asking for feedback on your mod here, but doing so while insulting us and the person who was working very hard on making a mod for the competitive community first is crossing the line.

Its silly that drama has to be injected into something as simple as securing a mod for a community. Ideally, it would be nice if they could work together, but theres obvious animosity there which I think will prevent that from happening.(on both sides)

I don't think what he said was that bad. He only sadi that you were being secrative about it. Which you stated you were, and that you were locked into shrub which once again you said you were sticking with him.

Just my take on the situation.

what exactly about my post was dishonest? please be specific.
So basically how I envision this working out, is that TWL will naturally support Shrub's tourney mod because of his willingness to get onboard the project right away and the work he's put in up to this point. Meanwhile, bani will one up the show by getting CAL to support his mod, in which case, the 2 main leagues will be using different tourney mods with subtly different rule bases, and the players will end up having to support both on their server of choice in order to play matches according to whichever league's rules. The community will be divided on this simple fact alone, forcing players to abandon either CAL or TWL, either out of simple necessity because they dont have their own server or the necessary admin control, or because both Shrub and bani will implement features differently enough that the community will be entrenched in petty arguments over which features they prefer and which are anathema to their enjoyment of the game. Sounds like fun.
lemme start off with, I hate everyone...

I've never understood bani-mod and I truly hate shrub for rtcw...that said...

seems to me that if you didn't want to divide the community, you'd have the three prominent mod makers from wolf colaberate...ie osp/shrub/bani...or at least tell all three what you were doing and ask for their input...

there does seem to be a little bias there...

personally I don't care what the hell is made...I'd detest the name shrub attached to it...not overly fond of bani attached to it...and I can't stand that little orange mixer that osp has...all I care about is the end result...so with that said isn't one better than 2 or 3 of these things? at least for competetion? so why keep it a secret?

only makes sense that even if you dislike one more than another, that you'd give all three the minimum of a shot at making a mod...

the paranoia factor is kicking in and me thinks there was a conspiracy behind it...

or at the bare minimum someones desire to use shrub...
I had a very long reply but decided not to post as to not get involved in the "mod wars." People and leagues will decide I suppose, I have no vested interest in anything but seeing the leagues be successful(since I am a player as well and love good matches). From a fairness perspective, I would like to see Tourneymod be adopted though. If they worked together, it woudl be ideal, but after hearing the RTCW mod war history and the above posts, I doubt those two will work together.
since bani got the code later its smart on his part to aproach cal because everyone knows theyre not going to use two differant mods for playing rtcw.

hey, I don't really give a chit either way...I vented about what I thought and thats it...I agree them working together probably isn't going to happen...but at the same time it does seem he was left out of the loop...wheither it be personal bias or just that shrub first came to mind when this came up...

doesn't really matter in the long run...just don't get defensive about what looks like someone getting passed over in favor of another...

I do agree with yellow that if there are two leagues running two different mods, then how stupid is that...espically since they're both going to solve virtually the same issues (at least at first)...

as to the main purpose of this topic...

I'd say dyno can be dropped/armed anywhere...and that your own dyno can damage friendly objects...but thats just me, and I'm sure I'm in the super minority on that one...
