A league is a more structured competition. Like Mudda said, in a league you play the same night and time each week for, on average, 8 weeks. Leagues have schedules setup by the admins as to which teams play each week and which maps are played. There is some room for negotiation i nleagues, but not very much. Teams can agree to play a match at a different date and time, but there is a set date that matches must be completed by.
Ladders are more open. Teams challange each other for ladder rung positions. The teams agree, via match comms, to a date and time for their match, and choose a map accordingly.
As for the number of members you need on a roster to join a league/ladder. If it is a 6v6 ladder, you need a monumum of 6 players on your roster. A 4v4 lader, you need a minimum of 4. Keep in mind, the team joins each ladder seperately, and has a seperate roster for each ladder.
Same principle applies to leagues, except. Leagues have a cut off date where no more teams can be added or removed, as well as roster lock dates which dictate whether you cna add players to your roster or not. In many cases, yo will not be added as an active league team until your roster meets the minimum requirements.
