[Enemy Territory] TWL Config Issues...

Historical capture recovered from the Wayback Machine · captured 2014-04-26 · 33 posts
I'm running ET on Mac OS X (PPC), I can connect to any other ETPro server fine, but when it comes to TWL matches, or servers with this TWL config, this issue comes up. Please Help, I've reinstalled ET (Clean Install), 2.60b, and the Latest patches using "pbsetup.run" and I can play for about 15 minutes in the a TWL config server fine, then this error will pop-up randomly. It's the TWL server config, I just don't know how to fix it, please help.

Delete that file out of your etmain.
No, don't delete that file out of your etmain. ET will cease to work.

Probably will need to redo configs, it looks like the mac versio has a different checksum for some dumb reason.

Yes, it looks like the 2.60d mac update did evil things
No, ETPro doesn't use 2.60d yet, it still wants 2.60b.

How do I fix this?
We have to fix it in our configs.

I think you're stuck on 2.60b though. These mac updates made a whole mess of things.
Yeah, ETPro has to fix it so we can both move on to 2.60d..

Thanks though guys

When is the PB Check going to happen?
Please tell us
what version of ET you have installed (2.60b or 2.60d)
what platform you are trying to run on (intel or PPC)
the md5 sum of your mp_bin.pk3

With this information, someone may be able to help you resolve your problem.

Version 2.60b
Mac OS X 10.4.9 (PPC)
mp_bin.pk3 = f4d4e4018641edf12fd0e30823e37e7b

There is a 2.60d? Whats the difference?
2.60d fixes

- cursor problem when changing bindings in the control menu
- now defaults to 24 Z-buffer, fixes Z-fighting problems
- fix listen server crashing at the end of warmup and related crashes..for mac'n etc.

ETPro requires 2.60b though, so there's no reason to move to 2.60d yet.

I get the same md5 sum for the current mp_bin.pk3

Does this error happen for you on all servers running the TWL config ? if not, there may be a stray check on the server you get kicked from.

It's also possible that PB is getting confused about where to look. Make your you only have one mp_bin.pk3. It should be in etmain your ET install directory (with pak0 etc, not in your fs_homepath (somewhere under your users home directory).

md5 checks on the .pk3 files for 2.60b shouldn't cause any trouble. The mac version uses exactly the same files as the windows and linux versions. If you look inside mp_bin.pk3, you will see the client shared libraries for all 3 platforms.

That said, md5 sum checks on this file are utterly useless on etpro servers, since etpro gets it's shared libraries from the etpro .pk3
Yes, All TWL Config servers are taking me out. I had no issues on my clan server that had default ETPro settings, then once we decided to switch over to TWL config to get use to the settings, I had issues staying in the server for more than 10-15 minutes. I went to other ETPro servers, such as, ETPro Box and there were no issues there. Also, beginning of TWL 6vs6 Season, I was in a match against *EVIL and we had to call someone in for me since we were constantly pausing waiting for me to reconnect. Which lead me to believe it was something in the server config. I've moved files, tweaked configs, reinstalled, everything. I still get the issues with TWL servers.

The TWL checks look OK to me. In 2.60b, the files are the same on all platforms, and win32/linux users don't get kicked.

This leads me to the conclusion that it is either a PB problem (i.e. their MD5 checking is somehow broken on mac), or a problem on your system.

You might want to open a support ticket with evenbalance. See http://www.evenbalance.com/troubleticket/new_ticket.php?game=et
Yeah, I've spoke to them at EB. One of them said, there was nothing they could do to fix it. Also, they said a "PBCheck" was required for TWL

I don't know...I'll reinstall the OS and see how that goes, but I'm going to try'n find another mac user and see if they have to same issue.

I can't imagine that reinstalling the OS would fix the problem.

The question that needs to be answered is, do MD5 checks work correctly under OSX ? The current indication seems to be that they do not, but most of us don't have the resources to test.
What does this error mean?

Try running pbsetup http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php
Hmm, apparently PB released a new config/patch, thanks for the suggestion.

Everything is fine now
Wait, nevermind...

They played a trick on me, they uploaded the TWL config today and now I can't get on.

TWL HELP!

As possibly the only mac user in TWL ET, you are going to have to help track down the problem. Given that Windows and linux users all have the same files, and do not get kicked, the TWL md5 checks are likely correct.

Here's some things you can do to help:
What is the exact error you are currently being kicked for ?

If you can find any other mac ET users, do they also get kicked ?

Do you get kicked from other servers that have md5 checks on mp_bin.pk3 ?

If you or your clan has admin on the server, can you get the PB logs from when you are kicked ?
Unfortunately my OSX86 installation is out of whack, so like reyal said, it's up to you.

I CAN say that I was able to run ET on a certified-config server through Rosetta at one point, although it was obviously slow.

copy/paste from punksbusted
Looking at the PsB recommended configs (in the sticky) they use
pb_sv_md5tool w "" v etmain/mp_bin.pk3 SZ1638102 AT0 LEN2048 7A8ECF6752C884DE42FD82621494F130
pb_sv_md5tool l "" v etmain/mp_bin.pk3 SZ1638102 AT0 LEN2048 7A8ECF6752C884DE42FD82621494F130
That is, MD5 checking only on windows and linux. This is done for all the md5 checks, not just mp_bin.pk3. The MD5 matches what TWL is using.

All the platforms use the same mp_bin.pk3 file (it contains the client code for all 3 platforms), and be3z! confirmed that he gets the same md5 sum using a normal md5 tools that we get.

The logical conclusion is that PB MD5 checking on Mac is broken.
Here, I just got an E-mail from Gir (Server Admin) and he said for every one of my kicks PB logged this error.

[03.26.2007 19:23:47] VIOLATION (MD5TOOL) #9002: ^8=^sS^/C^8=^sb^/e3^sz^8! (slot #15) MD5Tool Mismatch: etmain/mp_bin.pk3 (len=2048) [0edcec1f4d905366376a54dd2c9a9272(VALID:24) 75.36.133.198:27960 ]
What else can I do to help?

Either TWL needs to change their MD5 checks so they aren't run on Mac, or PB needs to fix their broken code.
"The hashes a standard md5 program will output and the one from PB's md5tool are different. We use a different algorith, so you will need to use our tool to get the correct hash. However those checks are not added by us. It's up to the admin or the league to add the correct checks." - (Hendrik Thole)

Could I just tweak my pbvuser.cfg instead of uploading a new server config?

That doesn't address the problem. The files are the same (as verified by an external MD5 tool), yet PB MD5 checks say they are different. In other words, PBs MD5 check code gives different results depending on the platform which means their code is broken.

Failing to acknowledge this is pretty typical of evenbalance.

As I said before, either PB has to fix their code (which is unlikely, given that they fail to admit it is broken in the first place) or TWL has to update their config to skip md5 checks on Mac. There is NOTHING YOU CAN DO ON YOUR END TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. (other than convincing one of these parties to do one of these things)

Clear ?

I can see clearly now...
Considering this appears to be a stupid problem on the part of EB, the checks will be updated to exclude Apple. The NOT_FOUND checks will remain intact.

There will also be several other small security-related updates.
The next PB patch is said to fix this issue as well, whichever comes first

Thanks guys.

EDIT: Patch released today, I went on TWL server for about 15 minutes and it seems to all be okay.
