What's to keep them from just changing the file name?

Would it be possible to have a forum "sticky" topic that will list the file names of “known” hack files, so I can keep on top of this crap.

I do not want to be kicked by PB for a violation, nor be accused of having a hack on my system. Thanks.

You should know if you have an hack or not.

well it appears several didnt know about this file just discovered... so how can you be sure if you have a known hack file or not?

honestly since this announcement I checked my folder and asked a lot of players I know if they had the file and none of them did...... Just stick to legit servers and dont hack GG

I visit some random pubs and i didn't have the file.

Maybe servers that are known to distribute this file should be listed on forums, so that they can be avoided. Each time a new one is found then just update list.

Also, since this is widely known now, they'll probably create a new file with a new file name doing the same thing. Admins will have to keep on top of this and post information they find if new ones are discovered.

My suggestion to everyone might be to delete all pk3s you downloaded that are very low file size and you know are not a map. If its a campaign for a server it can easily be downloaded again quickly so deleting these small pk3 files constantly shouldn't be a big deal.

I'm as against cheating as anyone else, but using a shotgun approach, which causes false positives and is trivial for the real hackers to bypass is a bad idea.

Every time you ban an innocent person (as you will, if you follow this policy) you do a lot more harm to the community than one hacker. Now people have to consider whether someone banned for "cheating" was actually cheating, or merely someone who got caught up in the system. Pretty soon, people will take the process much less seriously.

If you consider the reality of how this game is played, enforcing restriction on files which the average user might download without knowing is just plain stupid.

Ban based on .exe and .dll files, which require user intervention to install. Simple, no false positives.

On a side note, the hack this file comes with just became detected by PB - so the check may be removed.

Agreed. I would hate to visit some random pub, and inadvertently download a hack.

Trust me...anybody that has played against me can assure you I dont hack . I would just like to be sure that I dont dl this when I get to a pub server, then get banned or suspended for a hack I never even knew about.

Once I went to this server and all the axis had red skins and allies were green. i reinstalled ET and it fixed it.

If i remember right it was actually a british server, it also had some crazy sound effects , completely screwd up et pro.

At the same time many people don't outright know a server is a hacker server unless they are told. They can simply be bouncing into a ppublic server because it has people. Outside of that just because this is CURRENTLY the only file that can be unintentionally downloaded doesn't mean it will stay that way. Indeed its entirely possible that other files could be altered to be unintentionally downloaded.

What? Are we reading the same thread? I don't recall anybody saying anything even close to that.

Simple explanation for the simple minded:

When you have autodownloads on, you download custom files from some servers. Watermarks, custom vsays, custom gui stuff, etc. It seems when you join some shady servers out there you end up downloading this file just like you would any other "normal" custom .pk3. People are worried that they may have been a victim of one of these shady servers and they unknowingly have this file. They are also worried that this situation could happen again in the future, with a different file all together, or the same one just renamed. Resulting in PB picking it up as a hack and wrongfully banning the innocent.

lol, Im sorry reyal. Im definately not leet <--- no numbers is the proof. Im just trying to point out we all watch what gets put in our PC and the defense I didnt know is lame. I play et so much and never have had a file like the ones described and I leave the serious posts alone FYI. I probably have read every post in this section and BF2 and dont really post that often.
