Is there not a difference between cl_maxpackets 100 and 50 ? I don't see how changing it to 50 is beneficial. Someone explain this to me please, I'm not a cvar guru.

* When I said "we" you know I meant "me"
And when I said "sweet" I meant "dirty" *
I think two mines may be a bit more reasonable. I like the no rifle nades though, so many frustrating memories.

cl_maxpackets 50

Is there a particular reason for this restriction ?

(and for those who haven't looked at the config, it looks like it means 50-100, not 50 only)
hrm, even engys have "-1" XP eh? hrm. And yes in the config it does say 50-100.
This will work great for me since I always had 0 XP anyway
Sorry-- reading is over-rated .. Thanks for the clarifacation though !

Count me in with NaziMudda. My time at TWL-ET is officially over. Sorry can't be a part of this mess.

XP is -1 is horrible. And I dont think we should call the 3v3 league as part of ET anymore since theyve removed so much of the gameplay.

Next will be no more panzers/mortars/flamers, then no more cov ops because taking uni's can help a team too much and sniping just isnt fair for the one being sniped, then only 1 field op per team, but he wont be allowed to arty or airstrike, just give out ammo, then medics will be removed because everyone hates rambo medics so just get rid of them altogether to elimate that annoyance, then everything else that makes this game fun and unique removed, at that point, just maybe, we'll have the perfect game, cause it seems thats the only way to make this game "fair". Too bad its just no longer fun.
Great work TWL.

welll then dont play in 3v3 . ET is not meant to be played with this small of teams, so in order to make it enjoyable a lot of changes must be made.

My rant wasnt directed toward the 3v3, it was directed toward the philosophy twl is taking with "fixing" ET. Basically people say its not fair the way it is, so they remove stuff; people still dont like it, so they remove some more.

Last season they changed to no recharge when killed by enemy and only 7 mines. This season its no XP and only 5 mines. Read the second paragraph of my rant for what I feel will happen for the next several seasons if things continue this way.

How about a Soldier/mp40 only?

Seriously, with all due respect to the volunteers that keep this running (you guys do a great job imho) Why are all these changes being made without asking the people that are being forced to play under these rules? Clearly this new batch of configs is causing people to speak out against them, why isn't anyone listening? The last batch of changes brought up alot of nay-sayers, you would think that the changes would slow down? Instead these new, and more extreme, changes are released! I don't get it, nor do I like it.

I truly believe that the admins need to take a breather from the config thrashing that is going on, and ask the players what we want out of the game. Why not propose these changes, explain why they are beneficial, and allow the members of the ET divisions affected to voice opinions and vote on them?

These changes are not making the game more fun, they are taking away from the game itself, and creating a new one. If this is the goal, why not just code a game to your liking? ET was made to have XP. ET was made to have more than 5 landmines.

Like I said, I say this with much respect towards all the hard working people that make this thing called TWL run as smooth as it does. I do, however, feel that it is going to far with the changes now.
You've made the game too 'vanilla'. One of the huge things that makes ET unique was XP factor and levels. Now it's not much different than any other WWII FPS.

TWL was more of the "fun" league, you're trying to make it too much like CAL.

The 7v7 and Campaign ladders have (for the most part) remained untouched as far as configs go. There are plenty of mines and level ups.
played yesterday with cl_maxpackets 50 and all i can say is... THANKS FOR MAKING ME LAG MORE

still don't understand why change it when every et league in this world allows 30...
Here is where I honestly see the game going. I think it is getting to the point where we need to see an alpha config and a beta config. If you read the comments here and on et-center you start to see a trend. The alpha players for the most part like the changes and beta players do not. The reason comes down to the fact the game is so watered down now that matches will now be won by the team with the better pure shot. As far as I'm concerned, that's great for the alpha teams because most of those players are highly skilled in shooting.

On the other hand, beta is filled with players, like myself, who aren't the best shots in the game. I don't even consider myself in the top 50% as far as shooting goes. I play this game for fun, there are no prizes at the end of the season. So I personally liked the little things that have now been taken out of the game to make things "fair". I liked to pride myself in being good at things the alpha hate like landmines. But oh well, guess I don't have much choice except to maybe start playing WoW like everyone else.
How is this only great for alpha teams? Alpha plays other alpha teams, who will also probably be good shots. Matches are won by teamwork, not shooting ability.

Right, but the argument here is that enough of the game is being removed so that only the shooting ability remains. (which stinks, IMHO)
I think that the world of warcraft makers are paying off the various ET admins to kill the game so people will move to WOW.......
Seriously though I think the 3v3 ladder should be renamed the doolz ladder and kill/death ratios should win the match.
http://www.frigginwizard.com
I will say this game is dramatically different from the day I downloaded it on it's first release to now.....some changes are good, some are purely for those top alpha players, really. No XP is fine, IMO, it benefits the concepts of teamwork and evens the playing field a bit, I don't get the maxpackets thing, all i've heard is "some people said you can't hit people with maxpackets 30"? Is there anyways we can get some actual evidence on this? Changing mines is one thing, but changing the way people actually experience the game is another.
That was an interesting thought that was brought up since my post. I see where these people are comming from, saying that these changes benefit Alpha players. It seems to me that the Beta league usually looses to the wishes of the Alpha players. I see this game moving towards Alpha league play more and more everyday. That sucks for us "Beta Trash" as we are so kindly referred to by many (not all) Alphas.

Sorry to say that there are a whole lot more Beta teams out there than Alpha teams. I can see where the thought of having two configs, one for Alpha one for Beta, would work in a league setting. But seeing how the Alphas love comming down to ladders and playing also, that might be a pain in the ass for them (which might actually be a good thing and get some Alphas off the ladders )

My main problem with all these changes is that Beta teams are kept out of the loop completly until the decree is handed down from admins, most of which are Alpha players themselves. I don't think it is fair that rules are changed without our input or consent just as I don't think it is fair to have a private forum for Alphas only. I can only now assume that these changes have all be requested, approved, and made official in the Alpha forums without Beta teams even getting a say in the matter.

So I ask again, why are we not allowed to vote on changes that alter the way the game is played entirely??? I can understand changes like maxpackets being an admin decision (though I don't see a difference myself, but thats probably cause I don't sit there for 15 hours a day tweeking my configs) But what I refuse to accept is that admins don't care about what the people that are playing the game think! Though I guess when there is no accountability to the people you rule, that in effect gives the rulers free reign to do as they please, and not care about the opinion of the majority.

I highly doubt that when TWL was created, that it's vision was to create a class system where the upper class rule the lower class. There is no reason for us to emulate CAL rules. If teams want to play like CAL, why do they not considder joining CAL?
The best part of the this is that half of people scream for no riflenades in 3v3 are the ones that doesn't even give shit about et competition anymore. GG.

Yes, as far as I can tell, this is a completely pointless restriction. FWIW, I did some measurement on upload usage. Maxpackets 50 is about 92kbit/second up, which should be OK for anyone who has 128k or better upload, but once you count overhead and the fact the game requires upload for other things, is pretty close to the limit. Anyone with ISDN or worse, or sharing a 128k connection will be *completely screwed* by this setting.

I know there were some uneducated posts around about how maxpackets 30 was 'netlaming' and made you harder to hit, but as far as I can tell, this has no basis in reality. As long as your maxpackets are over 20, it should have *very* little impact on how you are seen to move by other players.

Still wondering what the rational behind this restriction is, and whether it has any technical basis.

Oh, and FWIW et will never send more than one packet per frame, so you can get the same effect as lowering you cl_maxpackets by lowering your com_maxfps.

/me waits for the rule than bans anyone getting less than 50fps
I really do think having a beta cfg and an alpha cfg could save this game, at least for a little while. Another major advantage of it may be that alpha teams stay in alpha instead of sandbagging down into beta just so they have a chance at a championship. What the hell, it can't hurt and it certainly can't be worse than it is now. Give the beta league back some mines, maybe 2 rnades and a lvl 1 battle sense award. Even if it's too late to consider something like that for this season, maybe try it in the next preseason. I really can't see why we couldn't try it out.

Agreed 100%. I, however, would like to see things stay the way they were 2 revisions ago; where XP was allowed, mines were 10, 2 rifle nades, etc. I still don't see a reason for all these changes, and also question as to why there are no answers given to any of these posts? Do the admins really not care about what the people who are playing this game think? Seems like they sometimes forget it is teams that make TWL, TWL; not the admins....

Oh they respond alright you just don't realize it. They respond by deleting post they don't wanna see. (hence why my 2nd post is no longer on this thread but can be viewed in it's entirety at the MadeMen Forums since i also copied and pasted it there. http://www.mademen.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=50117#50117

Secondly if you want to play the game in league competition with XP feel free to come over to STA http://www.sta-league.org

Tom
Your post was deleted because of language, not because of content.
Psycho could have said what he did with a little more tact, but that doesn't negate the fact that he made some very good points.

Sorry to tell the old guys that love their RTCW, but it's dying and there is nothing you can do to save it. Don't try to take ET, whose main selling point IS the XP system, and make it into a new version of RTCW!

This is rediculous that no admins will give an answer to any of the questions that have been brought up in this thread. I don't think anyone has said anything wrong in here, why are none of these issues being addressed?

If the Alphas want to make this game like RTCW so they can save that game (which is what seems to me is happening), let them have these rediculous configs. Leave the rules alone, and if you think a change is necessary LET US VOTE ON THE RULES. We are, afterall, only the people that are playing this game; why should we have a say in the rules that we follow?

Why doesn't TWL just copy and paste the CAL rules/configs/etc. It would make it much easier than this two or three changes a day thing that has been going on thus far....

You can look pretty foolish if you take a quote out of context of the rest of the message too. I take it that you conceed all his other points since you only chose that one to refute?

Disagreed. Tell me how many FPS games you have played that have an XP based system? Covops, ET:TF has 'em. Rifle nades, COD. New maps, hmm every game that ever comes out has new maps... Buildable vehicles, well, BFV has vehicles, ET has a truck and a tank that are on what ammounts to railroad tracks. Mobile MG, pretty much every war-based FPS has them too. Morters, COD has them down pat pretty good...

I do think its funny how out of all the strong arguments I have made against these changes, you chose to pick on this one tiny detail.... What about all the other things I and others have had to say?

I think we should just have Soldiers with MP40's. All the other weapons are too "noobish" and create an unfair advantage...
Is someone going to explain the reason for the new maxpackets restriction ?

:o

nobody uses coverts unless the map requires them to, land mines and rifle nades get restricted a little more each season, some of the biggest complaints on maps is when teams have to escort vehicles, and the use of heavy weapons is looked down upon. New maps can be made for RTCW

Well, it wasn't really out of context, since the theme of his post was implying that XP is the only real difference between ET and RTCW and to remove it is to completely destroy the game. That's definitely not the case. On a side note, I generally look foolish, so c'est la vie.

And I don't concede his other points, I just would rather not comment on them as it's not my place to do so.
I want to address the idea that these changes came from a "we only cater to the Alphas" perspective.

1) "All the admins are alpha players!" Umm....not me...definitely not ND80. Most of the admins got together last season on Punkless, and we couldn't even make the beta playoffs. I would also like to say that TDawg, who did play a season of alpha, would make a ruling based on bribes of nachos FAR before making a ruling based in any kind of elitism. The bias isn't there folks, you can stop looking.

addendum: by claiming this is a "beta vs alpha" problem, you're making a bigger problem, and ignoring the actual issue. Focus on the differences in gameplay, not in "leetness", please - this is what our goal is.

The changes...First off, the 3v3 changes were made from observation of a lot of matches at several levels. In a format where one very quick death and a bad spawn usually ends the round, the rifle grenade just didn't fit in - for the same reason the panzer doesn't - in 3v3.

The noXP change really doesn't effect much, except probably increasing the amount of necessary teamwork (people have to actually hand out ammo!), and possibly reducing the number of "rambo med" teams. The vast majority of XP impact was taken out 2 seasons ago with the change to "Euro Rules" - a decision that, despite a lot of flamage, a vast majority of teams agreed with.

Finally...

I did some experiments as well, and came up with much lower numbers than this...please get with me sometime soon, and we'll discuss it, because I would trust your numbers more than mine.
