I had a charity softball tourney this weekend and it dam near put me in the hospital. It was around 85 degrees Friday night(perfect sweaty weather for some tourney softball), and we played 2 games for seeding in a ten team charity Softball tourney (We placed as a 4 seed).
Knowing that our first game was at 8 a.m. Sat. morning we didn't spend to much time drinking alcohol after our final game Fri. which ended shortly after 10 pm. It was around 98 degrees Sat. a.m. and we took the field after eating breakfast together at a local diner. We sat through breakfast planning the day out making sure we had plenty of beer and water for the days fun. The young fellas also had plans of attending bachelor party at the conclusion of the tourney(some didn't attend after all). We took to the field at 8 a.m. sharp winning the game with a disappointing score of 6-2(unheard of for city league softball- yet, i didn't mention this was a wooden bat softball tourney which non of us were aware of. However, we enjoyed it because it brought defense back into the game).
Excited we headed back to our resting quarters(a buddies patio that was well shaded with refrigerated beer, breakfast pizza, swimming pool, hot tub, T.v, and full bar. Quite the setup). Our next game wasn't until 10:45 a.m so we had around 2 hours to waste. Waste we did pounding beer and water with a 1-1 ratio. Some guys drank around 6 beers with water and shots of marshmallow vodka and orange MIO(tasted like a creamscicle. I myself took in only 2 beers, one vodka and MIO, and 2 water.
At 10:45 we took the field again, losing 16-10. This is where it got tough. Losing sent us into the losers bracket. This meant back to back games. It also meant one more loss and we were done. With no down time to drink beer we kept the water flowing, and shirts changing due to the 98 degree weather.
At 12 we won 13-0, 5 inning mercy rule. This was great because we didn't exert energy. At 1:30 on another field we won 24-20. This game sucked, lasted almost 2 hours and the sun drained all of us. Then almost came the death of me, and a few other teammates.
At 3 the Life force in my body shut down. Not having a chance to eat yet due to playing back to back hurt us all. So in our 15 minute warm up before the game i sent my wife to get 8 pizzas for the team. We ate during the first 2 innings. This felt great a good recharge. Going into the 5th inning it was a bad game, innings were slowly carrying on. Bases were getting loaded but no one was really scoring. With a score of 9-4 them we were far from being done. In order to mercy someone you need to be up by 12 runs by the 5th other wise it's a 20 run immediate victory. Yet, if your home team, and its in the seventh you are guaranteed your last at bat. We were away, and in the seventh we overcame that deficit and mustered up enough strength to pull ahead by 10 runs bringing the score to 19-9. The game already going into 1:35 minutes played, we had to sit through an amazing comeback that added another 30 minutes with them winning 20-19.
Sounds like a great story. However, in the beginning of this game my whole team was tired. They were also feeling the heat. Two guys had to sit out saying they had nothing left. I too wanted nothing more than to go home and sit in the AC.
In the 3rd our shortstop and 3rd basemen shared a moment as they puked all over. In the very last inning i knew something was seriously wrong with me. Not only was i feeling nervous and shaky, but i started getting the cold chills in 100 degree weather. I shot home and threw myself into an ice bath. With in minutes i was passing out only to wake up this a.m feeling like shit. Thankfully i have a good wife who watched over me and made sure i was OK.
I'm writing all of this to remind the rest of you idiots like me to be careful in this heat, and even though your drinking water you can definitely push it to hard. So be careful my friends when your away from the safety of your desk!
P.S don't forget the sunscreen either!!!!!!!!!!
