So right now, it appears that a Season 3 Tournament won't begin until early January (due to the difficulty of squeezing in a season style tournament in holiday conditions). Therefore, for those who still want to play the tournament format in in late november/december, I propose taking a page out of Holiday Tournaments from the past:
One Day Tournaments.
Essentially, these tournaments would be held on a Sunday (or a Monday in the case of the day after Christmas), and be around 8 hour affairs. There should be room for 2-3 of such tournaments between the end of Season 2 and the start of Season 3.
As a general idea for what the schedule on these tournaments would look like, here's a mock up:
9 AM - 10:45 AM : Sign-ups. Must sign up the day of the tournament in this timeslot in order to be eligible. This is so that the captains drafting have no doubts you'll be there for the day.
11 AM - 12 PM : Draft. Captains Draft based on the pool. Judgment call on team sizes is made based on how many people are in the pool. Team Sizes will be anywhere from 7v7 to 14v14 depending on turnout. 10v10 is probably the most likely outcome given time commitments.
12 PM - 1 PM: Time given to the teams to get voice comm info out to everyone + get people on the same page as to who's doing what.
1 PM - 3 PM: First RR round.
3 PM - 5 PM: Second RR Round.
5 PM - 7 PM: Third RR Round.
7 PM - 9 PM: Finals (Top two teams from RR meet in finals).
Note, that you could also do single elim for the tournament as well. But given that the idea is to let people play, the RR format seems better suited. The general time committment from the players (not captains) is a little over 8 hours in this format.
Potential Dates for holding these are as follows:
November 27th (Sunday after Thanksgiving, in where a decent chunk of people should be back home)
December 11th (Sunday before finals for most people)
December 26th (Day after Christmas on a Monday. Most people should be off work, etc.)
Variants of the above format have worked pretty well in the past. I think it's the only shot of getting anything meaningful played during what would otherwise be a dead november/december.
In terms of preparation, captains and maps would be chosen 1-2 weeks before the tournament is held. This gives the captains time to setup skeleton strats for their maps, as well as players time to prepare routes/spam/whatever for the maps if they feel ambitious enough.
