Everybody thinks m0s$y 0aK is a smurf. Everybody knows he is a smurf. He didn't have a Tribes Next account created before the tournament started (at least not one that was unknown), he registered to TWL the day he signed up for the draft, and he puts up 667 points in the match last night, outscoring Darkstrand, psycore, essence, etc. On the casts you can see him own the shit out of LD "GET OFF ME LITTLE NIGGA!" Batman puts the team on his back.
So why is he allowed to play? Well my understanding is that his IP traces to some small town, which "happens" to be the same as Hawson. He has a dynamic IP, and since it doesn't match exactly to any known players, and there isn't 100% undeniable proof of WHO he is, Celios can't ban him. Apparently the TWL admin handbook says that if you don't have hard evidence of who the smurf is you can't ban them...
So what does this open up for future tournaments? As long as you are able to cover your tracks (play on a new IP 100% of the time) and not get linked to your old account with the exact same IP, you have free reign to smurf in future tournaments. If the admins can't determine WHO you are without a doubt, you are free to cheat. Even if everybody in the game knows you aren't legit, they can't do anything about it. And please, after 10 years in this game, SOMEBODY knows everybody, and the new Goons have legit backgrounds and existing accounts, nobody in this game is going to randomly show up unknown and crush kids.
The competetive future of this game is almost entirely going to be draft tournaments, since they've been so successful the last few times. How are we supposed to have any semblance of balanced or honest play if people are free to blatantly cheat the draft system, as long as we can't figure out who they are?
TWL has a bunch of rules up saying that you aren't allowed to smurf or sign up under a name other than your original without informing the admins, but apparently when it comes to TWL rules... words are wind. Unless TWL takes a different stance on this issue, I'm guessing future draft tournaments are going to be plagued with unknown T1 or base players coming in and dominating. Hell, you could make multiple smurfs so you have a better chance of getting on your ideal team, and just no-show on the teams you don't want to play for, nobody would know the difference. TWL is setting a dangerous precedent here.
I eagerly anticipate the influx of old-school unknowns returning for the next tournament!
