My problem: I boot my PC this morning (Wn XP Pro - amd xp 1800+ - abit kr7 MB), it goes through the boot process and halfway through the Win XP loading screen the Blue screen comes up stating: "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DEVICE". My first thought is 'hard drive?', since that is what i boot from. Is this an issue that can be resolved or did my HD just take a dump. I have tried restarting/restarting in safe mode/checked config in bios and every method brings me to the same place -> blue screen. Any help at all is apreciated or suggestions. Thanks.

Probably hard drive. If you can find a way to save vital stuff from safe mode or something do it and get a new HD.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DEVICE? Help! What do I do?

So, you got a BSOD that says UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DEVICE, huh?

Well, before you panic, you can repair this.

Boot your system with the Windows XP Install CD, let the system boot into the Setup. Once in the Setup, choose to run the Recovery Console.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to good old DOS.

At the prompt, type the following command: chkdsk C: /f

Replace C: with the letter of your system drive.

This will go into the File System and repair the damage that caused the BSOD.

Once it is complete, reboot your system as normal and it should come back to life.

If you need to do a deeper scan, such as looking for bad clusters, replace the /f with a /r. This way it reads as chkdsk C: /r .

Sounds lik teh HD for sure. I'd check the cables and make sure everything is secure. Can you hear the drive spin up on boot? Can you hear it spin up when it tries to load the OS? Hit me back in email if you want and I can't help you with some troubleshooting.

Thanks for the tips. I'll see what I can do when I can do when i get home. BBJ, I'm pretty sure the HD was spinning. I really hope it's not the Mb

Definitely the message makes your HD suspect, but before you do something drastic like reformat it or replace it, you might double check a couple things. First, and this belongs in the "duh" category but I'd be remiss not to mention it: be sure to remove any floppy discs or CDs from your computer. If it still won't boot, try reseating the power connector and the IDE cable at both ends. If that doesn't work, try booting off a floppy to make sure the problem isn't mobo/CPU/RAM related. Also, after booting off the floppy, be sure to try accessing your HD.

I had the same error...I had abit Kr7a mobo and the Pc repair place said that they had a lot of problems with that, and replaced it for me...now im set
LW's solution is kinda rare.

the recovery console + chkdsk suggestion is the best one. Sounds like a probable bad sector.

aint that a bitch!? I had an abit board with my last comp and it took a shit on me as well. It was an abit ka7-100 er something like that with a slot based athlon 800mhz cpu. It took a shit after about 2 years of use.
jesus is all ping
I just went through this about 3 weeks ago. Hard drive was toast. Same error.

Do you have an OEM machine such as Dell, Compaq, etc... if so, more they likely they will have a exe to test your HD's.
yeah, and that thing usually passes a bad hard drive :]

amen
sounds like the fan motor to me.
this is the 7th HD problem I've seen in the past 2 weeks now. (from the T2 community)
I wonder why so many peepz HD's are hitting the dirt lately ?
any known virus's out there that can cause this type of damage ?
virii cannot cause hardware failure.

I'd be willing to bet it's power problems. Furnaces have been working overtime in some areas for the past month or so because it's been so damn cold.

dirty power + no UPS = hard drive problems
true, Im damn glad I have a UPS

I didnt think a virus could cause actual damage, but Im pretty sure it can infect boot drives and such.

I had an HD problem about 3 wks ago, but it was from deleting about 8 gigs of old files I no longer needed.
(I dont think XP likes deleting large amounts of files at once)

OMFG! I had a POS LuckyTek or Luckystar mobo, with an 800MHz Slot-A Athlon and after 2 years, my hardrive took a shit.

You guys have Maxtors?

Btw, if the Repair function doesnt work, then you run thorough disc check (which will take hours and hours) and if it locks up or finds any serious problems, then contact the hd's manufacturer and tell them the problem. They will more than likely have you download a disc checking utility (made by them) and test it out and then give them the results.

As for me, it was my hardrive. The bitch actually failed, but Maxtor sent me a replacement within the week, even though the hardrive was 2 years old.

ya maxtors are pretty crappy
Thanks SteelCup. That did the job and fixed whatever was corrupt. After a flawless year or more with XP I guess the bluescreen really suprised me. Before XP I was an avid 98 user and bluescreens were not an uncommon thing for me. Anyways, good to know for next time.

Before doing anything drastic, remove cables from floppy, and CD/CDR/DVD devices. Reboot. My wife had a problem very similar to this just the other day and it was resolved by removing an old CDROM.
