Anyone else seem to get major lag spikes no matter what server they join? I can togle my net meter and watch it spike. Is it the CRC checking?
what server are you playing on? alot of the good dedicated servers haven't been updated yet and alot of people are hosting on home dsl/cable connections. That could be the cause of the lag spikes.

Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics. Even if you win your still a fucking retard.
i was just on 5150 comp east to see if what you said was true. 80 ms ping then 300 every 4 secs or so, i started playing with my network setting, it didnt change any ...

i am clueless, this never happened before the patch
hmmm...no clue...ping seems fine to me on a decent server...and no lag. running any scripts?

nope nothing, fresh install, no scripts, huds ... nothing just bare bone T2 and it sux that way.
for teh holysox.
I noticed the same, I also noticed my hd was being worked.
I checked and it seems my hd cache was getting hammered. I adjusted it and haven't seen the lag since.
Perhaps there's something new in the way the code's being loaded now?
i dont remeber hearing my drive ... lemme check and ill up my cache file to see if it helps
perhaps some server admins forgot to turn off CRC checking?

Would Crc checking continue well past 5 minutes into the map?
If so, does it have trouble "digesting" such textures as: flare - or repair beams - or elf beams or disc explosions?
crc runs throughout the game in timed cycles...

to prevent something like T1's cheatloader

Since enlarging my cache & chunk size I haven't had the "lag."
Btw, I also doubled the read ahead size.
I just don't remember crc "bothering" me throughout a game before.
I bet its the CRC checking

didn't get to play that long as night because of work in the morning but I will definitely try it out some more when I get home.
Whoever put CRC checking into T2 should be SHOT!
Everyone knows that if you want to cheat bad enough there will be a way to do it ... even if you try to protect it.

Besides, i like being able to change my explosions and skins and shit ... wtf is wrong with that!

jfksdajfjiosfjdaoihgoshgdahsdglshaugh I JUST WANT TO PLAY WITH NO LAG SPIKES!!!!!!!!
some servers are having serious problems with quick lag spikes that seem to be video lag..it could also be the map your playing on too...i noticed some new maps and they might need some updating.

Yeah, on Team Rabbit Servers it gets jumpy for me..even with a 100 ping. Not all, but alot. Maybe its the home hosting thing.
I just test this out and yes it is choppy like a mofo. It wasn't noticeable at first but I kept on seeing my jet trail in the upper left hand corner and that's when I really notice the choppiness.
I have a server that has a rythmic lag to it and it's present no matter what's running on the server. I'm uploading a clean cd install that's been patched and I'm hoping it takes care of the problem.

The server happen to have an AMD CPU ICFire?

The UF server is lagging and has an AMD cpu...what does that mean?

Crager
i have a fresh install of t2 and only the patch installed. yet, i havnt found one single server that plays smooth. either it jit-ttt---ters, or the ping fluctuates too bad. i even played on the RT east server, while i had a 30 ping it jittered worse than any other server i had played thus far. its ok, cause i still have my base++ install and i just go there to play t2, cause so far while TR2 and classic is fun, it has way too many issues for me right now.
For us euro's weve noticed the same problem, ALL dual processor servers have this jittery effect, to test it one admin even ripped a cpu out and reinstalled and it was fine. This is a major problem for europe as 80% of GSP's run only dual proccesor servers (barrysword, gamesurf etc...) all top clan private servers are dual and all are shagged! This seriously needs addressing FAST unless sierra want T2 to die very fast in europe!
My shit is jumping around too, i go from my normal 40-80 ping/40-80 FPS, to like 300 ping/150 FPS... wtf is that? it happens every few seconds too

Odd, last night I was playing on many different TR2 servers and the only lag I would get was right after joining the server. It would happen on the sound effects. Once most of the sound effects were cached after playing the lag completely went away. This took a couple of minutes.

I have an AMD 1.2 TBird, 448 meg of ram, Aureal Quad Sound Card and 32 meg GF2.

I wonder how many people that are experiencing consistant lag have certain Creative Sound Cards? The reason I ask is because I have see some people say they changed sound settings in T2 and it miminized or eliminated the lag.

(Sierra should have change from the Miles Drivers to something more stable in my opinion.)
The sound lag is a different problem. The problem most people are discussing here feels like net lag every second or two. Clients stutter as though there is some net problem.

Is there a setting anyone for servers on what their send/rec rates are?
I doubt it's the sound. I played on one server last night with no problems.(I think it was someone hosting a non dedicated on their own machine.) Then I joined another server and it was choppy as hell. I could play but it wasn't smooth like the other one. I did get the inital stutter when I joined on the first one but after that it was fine.
These periodic ping spikes sound like they are very similar frequency to the demo "warping" issue i had posted about:
http://www.teamwarfare.com/forums/showthread.asp?forumid=4&threadid=18828
I'm not sure what i'm getting at exactly. If, in fact, these glitches do coincide in a timeline, it would perhaps focus the search for the problem, ie, setgravity or demo related(?)
In the other post i ask about the 2nd set of variables that was mentioned. What would happen if, i dunno...you deleted it?

Just an observation from a non-coder, plz take them in the manner in which they were intended...brainstorming/constructive criticizm/dead reckoning.
If ripping out one of the CPUs in a MP system fixes the problem, does setting the processor affinity for the T2 executable (so that it just runs on one cpu) also fix the problem? Here is a link on how to do that:

CRC checking is off.

It's completely unplayable. It was a FRESH install, they are checking out their end for me.

I got the same thing. I have a recon gamer server too. I heard that a router might be down.

Any help is appreciated.
Out of curiosity, are any of these P4/P3 boxes that "work" MP boxes as well?

Also is this under the Linux server or the MS server?
I have a recon gamer server running tricon, and the damn thing is jumping now, I don't get this jumpiness when I'm not in the server, only this one. I have heard other issues about Recon Gamer servers, and I hope it's just a network problem, but my ping never seems to jump, so I don't think it is.
PLEASE READ

Guys, and I hope you read this. Please do a carefull comparison of the beta-patch and pre-release versions of mods and gametypes to the released patch. I dont recall hearing that the beta's and pre-releases did this. The problem likely lies in the difference between the two.

As a test try running the beta patches executible instead of the final exe and see if that fixes the problem.

I am wondering if something was changed in the exe from beta to final.

In other words, install T2 on some box and beta patch it, then transfer that patched exe to the SMP server.

The beta patches are still available on Sierras pub ftp.
Will do. Will take a bit. (I'm on a modem at home and the server in question is in Phoenix - 150 miles from here). I will post results.

Thanks bud.
I know quoting yourself is bad forms, but

I would bet money that this will fix the problem. A company I used to work for had some software that didn't behave well on SMP machines, and this fixed it.

hehe
Games Hosting cant remove CPU's.

I copied the Tribes2.exe from my beta install onto the server that is lurching. Connected using a new beta test install and it still lurched.

The beta install on the server had the new rather than the beta versions of mods and gametypes. (I dont have the betaq mods/gametypes. A release patch install with a beta-patch Tribes2.exe).

I would have tried a release client, but I got the 'someone else is using this account' error.

and they said this patch improved net code. :P
